  • Patent number: 4171573
Abstract: A cropping guide especially for drawing a proportioned field for use in audio/visual work has three straight edge marking device guides, each with an index associated therewith. The first and second straight edges define a right angle therebetween and the third edge defines a bisector of the right angle to form an angle with the first edge having a cotangent equal to the ratio of the field to be drawn using the cropping guide. The ratio of the index on the first edge to the corresponding index on the second edge is also the same as the field ratio. The index on the third edge is defined by the projection thereon along a line parallel to the first edge, of the index on the second edge.

  • Patent number: 4171578
Abstract: A single shot surveying instrument which is designed to be lowered to a desired location in a borehole and to take a single picture which indicates the direction of the borehole. The instrument operates in a first mode in which a picture is taken after the passage of a preselected period of time, which period is selected to allow sufficient time for the instrument to be properly positioned in the borehole. The instrument also operates in a second mode in which a picture is taken after the lapse of the preselected period of time if there is an absence of motion by the instrument during a last portion of the preselected time period. An indicator light on the instrument provides a check for premature operation of the instrument and for operability of the motion sensing capability.

  • Patent number: 4171580
Abstract: A boot dryer utilizes a housing having an ingress port and an egress port and a low current consuming motor driven fan therein. A pair of flexible hoses are removably secured to the ports of the housing and extend downwardly therefrom when the housing is supported by a wire-like hook pivotably secured to the uppermost regions of the housing. The hook is extensible in length facilitating and supporting the housing depending downwardly therefrom. The free end of the flexible hoses, removably secured to the ports of the housing, are cut so as to form an angle to the longitudinal axis of the hoses. In use, the hoses are inserted into a pair of boots exposed in side by side relationship and a slow cool flow of air enters one boot and circulates upwardly through one hose and through the housing and then downwardly through the other hose, exiting outwardly from the remaining boot, thus drying the boot without cracking or deteriorating the interior of the boot.

  • Patent number: 4171589
Abstract: Animal traps consist of either snare type traps or jaw type traps. Snares are difficult to set inasmuch as they have to be situated not only where the animal will pass through the snare, but so that the snare will pull tight thus trapping the animal. Jaw type traps, although efficient at trapping animals, are usually not particularly humane in their action and snares also suffer from this disadvantage. The present trap incorporates a snare loop held by spring arms and is set by a trigger mechanism so that when the snare loop is pulled slightly as by an animal engaging the loop, the trigger releases and the spring arms move apart rapidly thus snapping the loop closed with considerable force and killing the animal instantaneously.

  • Patent number: 4171608
Abstract: A safety attachment is provided for use with a rotary lawn mower to prevent substantial injury to anyone whose extremity may accidentally strike the cutter. The attachment includes a relatively large annular disc mounted to the drive shaft of the motor for rotation about a vertical axis and at least one cutter bar mounted diametrically across the disc on the underside thereof. The disc diameter is substantially equal to the length of the cutter bar. In one embodiment slots are provided adjacent to the leading edges of the cutter bar and impellers are provided on the upper side of the disc adjacent the slot fordischarging cut grass through the side of the machine. The combination of the disc and the cutter bar provides good grass cutting action and at the same time greatly reduces the risk of serious injury in the event that one's foot, for example, accidentally slips in under the mower.

  • Patent number: 4171613
Abstract: The commanded rotational speed is compared with the actual rotational speed to produce a deviation signal. This deviation signal is multiplied by a coefficient which is determined by state variables (speed and intake pressure) of the engine and a proportional component plus an integral component of the multiplication product is employed as a control signal. This control signal is checked to make sure that it is outside critical engine states associated with the actual performance of the engine. On this control signal is superposed a signal representing the steady-state fuel flow associated with the commanded rotary speed (or under some circumstances the actual rotary speed) to determine the fuel flow rate to the engine.

  • Patent number: 4171616
Abstract: The specification discloses a hydraulic pressure operated emergency hand tool of the type in which manual pressure exerted on an all position small-area pump piston creates a hydraulic pressure which is communicated to a power cylinder for activating a plural jaw tool member, such as a pair of cutter blades. The jaw members are pivoted together intermediate their ends and one end of each is pivotally connected one to the power cylinder opposite the free end of the piston and the other to the free end of the piston. A release valve provides instant return displacement of hydraulic medium via a by-pass communication from the cylinder to the reservoir to relieve the activating pressure on the cutter blade and restore it promptly to normal position. Interchangeable tool members are provided.

  • Patent number: 4171617
Abstract: A solar thermal electric power system, in which a solar collector, a heat storage vessel filled with a thermal storage material adapted to effect a phase change between solid and liquid internally, a turbine, a condenser, a condensate storage tank, a feed water pump are connected in a closed loop by suitable conduits. A first control valve is provided en route between the solar collector and a heat storage vessel. An steam accumulator filled with water is connected via a second control valve in a pipe route between the solar collector and the first control valve, as well as to a pipe route between the first control valve and the heat storage vessel via a third control valve. The temperature of a fluid flowing out of the solar collector is detected, and when the temperature detected is to be lower than a set temperature, then the first control valve is controlled so as to be closed, while the second control valve is opened.

  • Patent number: 4171618
Abstract: A motor is provided of the piston or diaphragm type in which vacuum is constantly applied to one side of a piston or the like and air under pressure is constantly applied to the opposite side to drive the piston through a stroke. The vacuum and pressurized air may be obtained from sources outside the motor. A valve mechanism driven by the motor reverses the application of vacuum and air pressure when the piston reaches each end of its stroke so that power is continuously applied to both sides of the piston during both forward and reverse movement thereof. Different pistons are arranged out of phase with one another to provide a smooth flow of mechanical power. In one version, the motor drives an air pump having a vacuum inlet and an air pressure outlet, and by connecting such inlet and outlet to the valve mechanism, the motor will drive a load as well as itself. In another version, the motor has an internal combustion apparatus incorporated therewith.
