    Abstract: A system for assembling a hard crystal blank onto a base which includes connecting pins, using an apparatus providing self-locating and self-fixturing features, is described. The apparatus comprises a hard crystal blank supporting structure which provides vertical, horizontal and transverse locating features. The vertical, horizontal and transverse locating features are contiguous to the crystal supporting structure and locate the hard crystal blank to the crystal supporting structure. The hard crystal blank once located may be secured to the crystal supporting structure with a suitable adhesive. Connecting features for securing the crystal supporting structure to the base are provided. Once the crystal supporting structure has been secured to the base, the vertical, horizontal and transverse locating features are separated from the crystal supporting structure. The hard crystal blank and crystal supporting structure so assembled are precisely aligned to the base.

The slide is supported on ways (24, 26) by way bearing pads (28-32) and opposed adjustable bearing assemblies (34-38). The seats (50) are formed by rough machining pockets (40, 42) into slide (20), positioning the slide (20) onto the ways (24, 26), positioning tooling blocks (60) at the locations normally occupied by the bearing components (28-36), and filling the spaces between the tooling blocks and pockets with a low friction, epoxy material, thereby forming the seats (50). Any one of the bearing components (28-38) may be removed and replaced without removing the slide (20) from the ways (24, 26). Further, each bearing assembly (34, 38) is mounted on one side of a respective way with a way bearing pad (28-32) being mounted on the opposite side of the way.

    Abstract: A method for and an apparatus for assembly of rotating ring rotary compressors is disclosed. A cylinder, shaft, roller and supports are initially assembled together, fixing means being kept in a slackened position. A preliminary centering operation is then carried out for bringing the axis of the shaft into a diametral plane of the cylinder constituting a predetermined reference plane. This operation is carried out by orientation of the shaft into two angular positions spaced from each other by 180.degree.. The shaft is then oriented relative to the cylinder, the region of maximum eccentricity of the core being brought into the said reference plane. The support and the cylinder (this latter with the interposition of the roller) are then pressed onto the shaft by a thrust exerted in the said predetermined plane.

    Abstract: Heat exchanger tubes and heat pipes are simultaneously radially expanded into engagement with heat transfer fins and provided with internal spiral grooving by a generally spherical shaped tool disposed on the end of an elongated mandrel. The tool comprises a spherical segment having helical teeth formed on the exterior thereof and the tool is mounted for free rotation on the end of the mandrel. In forming a finned tube type heat exchanger a series of platelike fins are disposed in alignment with each other with tube receiving openings formed slightly oversize with respect to the outside diameter of the tube prior to expansion. The tube is supported by the fins and is secured at one end by a suitable device such as an expanding jaw collet connected to a hydraulic cylinder for extending the mandrel through the tube.

A self-supporting tool is provided that can be interposed manually between a pair of flanking wooden studs or equivalent vertical structural members at desired height and depth of insertion. The tool, when manually released, engages the studs forcibly enough, as by indenting their sides, to be held in place while a utility box or panel is placed on the tool by the user of the tool, who then secures the box or panel in place by inserting fastening means, such as nails or screws, through its side and into the sides of the studs. The tool gauges the depth of insertion of the box or panel between the studs, by contact with the front surfaces of the studs and the rear surface of the box or panel.

    Abstract: A device to determine the operable failure mode of mechanically fastened lightweight composite joints by measuring the hole elongation of a bolted joint is disclosed. The double-lap joint test apparatus 10 comprises a stud 20, a test specimen 30 having a hole, two load transfer plates 31, and linear displacement measuring instruments 27. The test specimen 30 having a hole is sandwiched between two load transfer plates 31 and clamped together with the stud 20. Spacer washers 22 are placed between the test specimen 30 and each load transfer plate 31 to provide a known, controllable area for the determination of clamping forces around the hole of the test specimen 30 attributable to bolt torque. The spacer washers 22 also provide a gap for the mounting of reference angles 23 on each side of the test specimen 30. Under tensile loading, elongation of the hole of test specimen 30 causes the stud 20 to move away from the reference angles 23.

The heat collector is preferably constituted of fabric material and the heat separately evacuated therefrom is recycled elsewhere in the plant to supply or release additional energy.

The plate slidably engages structure in the holder which supports the plate in a transverse orientation to the interior thread of the holder whereby the threaded shank of the spike contacts and secures the plate in this arrangement. By this configuration, the plate may be inserted between the lower and upper layers of the sole for securely retaining the holder in position within the cavity in the lower layer of the sole.
