Abstract: A method for forming vertical stacks of documents and then conveying the stacks serially along a conveyor to further processing stations. The stacks are rapidly ejected onto a conveyor which is driven at a relatively slow delivery speed, and to avoid longitudinal shingling of the stacks caused by their rapid ejection onto the conveyor, and to correct any lateral misalignment of each stack, there is provided a pair of rotatably mounted resilient guide rolls along respective opposite sides of the conveyor for rotation about vertical axes. The rolls are spaced apart a distance such that the rolls resiliently engage the opposite sides of the stacks as they pass therebetween. Also, the guide rolls are rotated at an initial peripheral speed which closely approximates the speed of the advancing stacks when the stacks engage the two guide rolls, which serves to square the stacks.

Abstract: A control valve for a variable displacement compressor in refrigerant circuit permits the compressor displacement to be accurately controlled regardless of the thermal load on an evaporator. The refrigerant circuit includes a high pressure pipe, which extends between a discharge chamber of the compressor and a condenser. A first pressure monitoring point is located in the discharge chamber. A second pressure monitoring point is located in the high pressure pipe. A supply passage connects the second pressure monitoring point with a crank chamber of the compressor. The control valve is located in the supply passage and adjusts the opening size of the supply passage in accordance with the difference between the pressure at the first pressure monitoring point and the pressure at the second pressure monitoring point. The control valve includes a solenoid for determining the target value of the pressure difference. The control valve operates to maintain the determined target value.

Abstract: A safety device for use in a fluid transfer and/or circulation system of the type which uses a pump to draw water from a reservoir through one or more intake lines each extending from an open end at the reservoir to the pump intake. The safety device connects to the fluid transfer/circulation system and includes a sensor, a triggering mechanism, and a vacuum breaker. When the pump is operating, the sensor monitors one or more conditions of the system. When one or more of the monitored conditions deviates outside of a normal operational range, as a result of an obstruction of any one or more of the open ends of the intake lines, the triggering mechanism triggers the vacuum breaker to eliminate negative pressure in the system by introducing air from atmosphere into the intake lines, thereby removing suction at the open ends of the intake lines. The safety device may further activate warning devices including audible and visible alarms to indicate that the system has been deactivated.

The microcapsules are formed by interfacial coacervation under conditions where the shear forces are limited to 0-100 dynes/cm2 at the interface. By placing the microcapsules in a high osmotic dewatering solution, the protein solution is gradually made saturated and then supersaturated, and the controlled nucleation and crystallization of the protein is achieved. The crystal-filled microcapsules prepared by this method can be conveniently harvested and stored while keeping the encapsulated crystals in essentially pristine condition due to the rugged, protective membrane. Because the membrane components themselves are x-ray transparent, large crystal-containing microcapsules can be individually selected, mounted in x-ray capillary tubes and subjected to high energy x-ray diffraction studies to determine the 3-D structure of the protein molecules.

The packaging system is easily opened by the end consumer and yet is capable of sustaining a desired environment within the package during the storage life of the composition. The invention includes a method for determining package seal strength for a refrigerated leavened composition. The system provides an environment within the package such that the composition attains a desired specific volume upon baking or cooking. The method includes the process of determining the specific volume required for the refrigerated leavened composition after baking, determining internal equilibrium pressure required to attain the specific volume after baking, determining the package dimension subject to the internal equilibrium pressure, and defining the pressure holding capacity required to maintain this pressure during the storage life of the refrigerated composition.

In one embodiment, the palatability enhancer is a dry cat food coating including tetrasodium pyrophosphate at about 0.1% to about 1.0% by weight of the finished pet food product. The palatability enhancer is applied after the extrusion process to the extruded particles or pieces of pet food.

Abstract: An integrated circuit is formed containing a metal-oxide ferroelectric thin film. An inert-gas recovery anneal is conducted to reverse the degradation of ferroelectric properties caused by hydrogen. The inert-gas recovery anneal is conducted in an unreactive gas atmosphere at a temperature range from 300° to 1000° C. for a time period from one minute to two hours. Preferably, the metal-oxide thin film comprises layered superlattice material. Preferably, the layered superlattice material comprises strontium bismuth tantalate or strontium bismuth tantalum niobate. If the integrated circuit manufacture includes a forming-gas anneal, then the inert-gas recovery anneal is performed after the forming-gas anneal, preferably at or near the same temperature and for the same time duration as the forming-gas anneal.

Abstract: The present invention is for particulate compositions and methods for producing them that can absorb or scatter electromagnetic radiation. The particles are homogeneous in size and are comprised of a nonconducting inner layer that is surrounded by an electrically conducting material. The ratio of the thickness of the nonconducting layer to the thickness of the outer conducting shell is determinative of the wavelength of maximum absorbance or scattering of the particle. Unique solution phase methods for synthesizing the particles involve linking clusters of the conducting atoms, ions, or molecules to the nonconducting inner layer by linear molecules. This step can be followed by growth of the metal onto the clusters to form a coherent conducting shell that encapsulates the core.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming high-quality deposited material layers in semiconductor manufacturing are provided. In the method, the initial stages of a deposition are performed with no current flowing through substrate heater filaments. Current is restored to the heater filaments when needed to maintain the substrate within an acceptable range around a target or setpoint temperature. When an on/off temperature controller is used, the method may be implemented without disturbing the normal operation of the controller, by monitoring the heater filament current and beginning a deposition just after the current has been turned off by the controller. Current may also be removed from the heater filaments at the end of the deposition, so that concentrations of deposition species may equilibrate without the presence of heater currents.

Abstract: A new method for CVD deposition on a substrate is taught wherein radical species are used in alternate steps to depositions from a molecular precursor to treat the material deposited from the molecular precursor and to prepare the substrate surface with a reactive chemical in preparation for the next molecular precursor step. By repetitive cycles a composite integrated film is produced. In a preferred embodiment the depositions from the molecular precursor are metals, and the radicals in the alternate steps are used to remove ligands left from the metal precursor reactions, and to oxidize or nitridize the metal surface in subsequent layers. A variety of alternative chemistries are taught for different films, and hardware combinations to practice the invention are taught as well.

Abstract: An extrusion coating head comprises an upstream side block (12) and a downstream side block (13) aligned in the conveying direction, and adjusting mechanism. The upstream and downstream side blocks (12, 13) respectively have edge surfaces (12a, 13a) on which the flexible support (1) is pressed. The upstream and downstream side blocks (12, 13) define therebetween a slit (15b) through which a coating composition can be extruded and applied onto the flexible support. The adjusting mechanism adjusts a length (t) of a perpendicular line which is drawn from an upstream end (A) of the edge surface of the downstream side block to a tangential line (L) of the edge surface of the downstream side block which is drawn from a downstream end of the edge surface of the upstream side block, to thereby adjust a distribution of a coating thickness on the flexible support in the width direction.
