Abstract: A magnetic induction drive for a rotatable driven member in a sealed housing, in particular, a shaft-mounted blade in a blender cup, uses a comparatively thin circular plate of a magnetizable material with circumferentially arrayed poles secured within the housing to the shaft. A brushless d.c. motor in a base separate from the housing has a rotor formed as an array of pie-shaped permanent magnet regions that interact with an electronically controlled, rotating electromagnetic field produced by a ring of stator coils. A second such permanent magnet is coupled to rotate coaxially and in unison with the rotor, with poles of opposite polarity aligned and adjacent one another. A steel disc is sandwiched between and bonded to the rotor and the second permanent magnet. The magnetic field (lines of flux) of the second magnet extends axially away from the rotor to induce magnetic poles of opposite polarity in the drive plate.

Abstract: An optical pickup position control device according to the present invention automatically adjusts tracking with precision and in a short time. Two deviation signals, which express deviation of a light beam, projected by a pickup which uses the three-beam method, from a target track of a disk, are digitized by two AD converters. Two high-pass filters extract from the deviation signals AC signals, producing a tracking error signal. Further, two low-pass filters extract from the deviation signals DC signals (offset components). Two other low-pass filters extract from the deviation signals low-band signals containing DC components. Using the various foregoing signals, a control circuit calculates correction values to be applied to two offset correcting circuits and to two gain/balance correcting circuits, and corrections are performed collectively and simultaneously on the basis of these correction values.

Abstract: An optical storage medium of the present invention enables storage of data with high precision at high speed, and rewriting of data at high speed without an erasing process. Optical storage, reading and retrieving methods and optical storage, reading, and retrieving apparatuses using the medium are also provided. The optical storage medium has at least a polarization-sensitive member having the photo-induced birefringence property, such as a member made of polyester polymer having cyanoazobenzene as a side chain. The above apparatuses have spatial light modulator capable of modulating polarization. The modulator provides information of bit of two-dimensional data to each corresponding pixel by application or non-application of a voltage, and modulates the polarization of the beam incident on each pixel. Thereby, a signal beam transmitted through the spatial light modulator having a spatial polarization modulation corresponding to the two-dimensional data is obtained.

Abstract: A service option overlay for a CDMA wireless communication in which multiple allocatable subchannels are defined on a reverse link by assigning different code phases of a given long pseudonoise (PN) code to each subchannel. The instantaneous bandwidth needs of each on-line subscriber unit are then met by dynamically allocating none, one, or multiple subchannels on an as needed basis for each network layer connection. The system efficiently provides a relatively large number of virtual physical connections between the subscriber units and the base stations on the reverse link for extended idle periods such as when computers connected to the subscriber units are powered on, but not presently actively sending or receiving data. These maintenance subchannels permit the base station and the subscriber units to remain in phase and time synchronism. This in turn allows fast acquisition of additional subchannels as needed by allocating new code phase subchannels.

A third slicer detects the input with respect to the union of the two disjoint symbol-subsets. Decisions from the first, second and third slicers are processed to define 1D square error terms expressed in Hamming metrics. Abstract: An on-demand teleconferencing system and method for setting up an on-demand conference call in a telecommunications system having the Advanced Information Network (AIN) architecture with system signaling the number 7 (SS7) and a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). A subscriber is assigned an on-demand conference call number. When that number is dialed into the PSTN, it is identified by the PSTN that the dialed number requires handling by the SS7. The SS7 links the dialed number to a conference allocation and control system (CACS) which is connected to a plurality of scalable bridge servers. The CACS selects bridge servers available to handle the conference call and based upon a selection criteria such as a peak load sets up the on-demand conference call in one of the selected bridge servers.

Abstract: For the authentication of messages communicated in a distributed system from an originator to a destination a keyed-hashing technique is used according to which data to be authenticated is concatenated with a private (secret) key and then processed to the cryptographic hash function. The data are transmitted together with the digest of the hash function from the originator to the destination. The data comprises temporal validity information representing the temporal validity of the data. For example the setup key of a communication is therefore only valid within a given time interval that is dynamically defined by the communication originator. After the time interval is exceeded the setup key is invalid and cannot be reused again.

Abstract: Feedback cancellation apparatus uses a cascade of two filters along with a short bulk delay. The first filter is adapted when the hearing aid is turned on in the ear. This filter adapts quickly using a white noise probe signal, and then the filter coefficients are frozen. The first filter models parts of the hearing-aid feedback path that are essentially constant over the course of the day. The second filter adapts while the hearing aid is in use and does not use a separate probe signal. This filter provides a rapid correction to the feedback path model when the hearing aid goes unstable, and more slowly tracks perturbations in the feedback path that occur in daily use. The delay shifts the filter response to make the most effective use of the limited number of filter coefficients.

Abstract: A digital image signal is watermarked by locally changing geometric features of the image. The watermark consists of a pseudo-random, dense subset of image pixels, e.g., a pattern of lines (20). A number of significant image pixels (21,22,23), i.e., pixels which give the highest response to a predetermined processing operation, is determined and then moved (24) to the vicinity (&dgr;) of the line pattern. As a result of this “warping”, the majority of significant image pixels (21,22) is eventually located within the vicinity of the line pattern. At the receiver end, the most significant pixels of an input image are again determined. The image is a watermarked image if a statistically high percentage lies within the vicinity of the line pattern.

Abstract: In a broadly-applicable face image extraction device and method for defining a face by position and size in target images varied in type for face image extraction at high speed, an edge extraction part 1 extracts an edge part from a target image and generates an edge image. A template storage part 2 previously stores a template composed of a plurality of concentric shapes varied in size. A voting result storage part 3 has voting storage regions for each size of the concentric shapes of the template so as to store the result obtained by voting processing carried out by a voting part 4. The voting part 4 carries out the voting processing utilizing the template at each pixel in the edge image, and stores the result obtained thereby in the corresponding voting storage region. After the voting processing, an analysis part 5 performs cluster evaluation based on the voting results stored in the voting storage regions, and then defines the face in the target image by position and size.

Abstract: An image recognition system recognizes correspondence between object images contained respectively in two images obtained by two infrared ray cameras. One of the two images is set to a reference image and another of the two images to a comparison image. A correlation parameter indicative of a correlation between a reference pattern contained in the reference image and containing an object image and each pattern contained in the comparison image and identical in shape to the reference pattern is calculated by using a luminance value indicative of a luminance of the reference pattern and a luminance value indicative of a luminance of the each pattern contained in the comparison image. Based on the calculated correlation parameter, a pattern having a highest correlation with the reference pattern is extracted from the comparison image as a corresponding pattern which corresponds to the reference pattern.
