Abstract: A number of generally tri-lateral truss components or modules are interconnected with truss fasteners to construct a modular truss. Each tri-lateral member has three elongated chords, which may include first and second side chords and a base chord. Each chord has two opposing ends. A first end of the first chord is connected with a second end of the second chord, while a first end of the second chord is connected with a second end of the third chord, and a first end of the third chord is connected with a second end of the first chord. The three chords thereby define a generally tri-lateral member. A parallel chord truss may be built up of tri-lateral truss components by arranging a series of truss components in alternating upright and upside down orientations with adjacent side chords abutting one another. That is, a first truss component may be oriented in a first, upright position, while adjacent truss components are placed in an inverted, second, or upside down orientation.

Abstract: A refrigeration system allows the refrigerant to circulate through a closed circulation channel. A dry evaporator is incorporated in the circulation channel. The dry evaporator is designed to keep a quality smaller than 1.0 in evaporating the refrigerant. The quantity of heat transfer per unit area, namely, a heat transfer coefficient depends on the quality. The heat transfer coefficient remarkably drops when the quality of the refrigerant exceeds a predetermined threshold level before the quality actually reaches 1.0. The quality of the refrigerant kept below the predetermined threshold level during vaporization of the refrigerant in the dry evaporator allows a reliable establishment of a higher performance of cooling. On the other hand, if a refrigerant completely evaporates in a dry evaporator in a conventional manner, the heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant remarkably drops after the quality of the refrigerant exceeds the predetermined threshold level.

Abstract: A dynamic-mechanical analysis device has a support with upright longitudinal axis. An electromechanical transducer introduces a mechanical force along a linear force transmission path parallel to the longitudinal axis into holder parts of a sample holder for receiving the sample which are deflectable along the force transmission path. The introduced mechanical force is coupled to the first holder part and the reaction force is supported on the second holder part. A measuring device measures the deflection of the holder parts relative to one another. An adjusting device with connector part is connected to the force transmission path and is adjustable transverse to the longitudinal axis along first and second spatial axes perpendicular to one another. It has a first carriage slidable along the first spatial axis, a pivot frame slidable on the first carriage, and a second carriage slidable on the pivot frame along the second spatial axis.

Abstract: A vortex flowmeter capable of measuring the flow rate of fluid flowing through a pipe bidirectionally or in a pulsating manner while measurement error is substantially nulled. The vortex flowmeter includes a first vortex-generating body 2a disposed within a pipe 1 for generating a Karman vortex m for a flow in one direction, a second vortex-generating body 2b disposed within the pipe 1 for generating a Karman vortex m for a flow in the opposite direction, and vortex detection means X and Y for detecting a Karman vortex generated by each of the vortex-generating bodies 2a and 2b. When applied to the case where backward flow is generated in fluid flowing through a pipe in a regular direction to thereby cause a pulsating flow, the vortex detection means X and Y detect the Karman vortexes, and subtraction is performed on output values represented, for example, by the number of pulses to thereby take into account the influence of backward flow on the regular flow, thereby determining an accurate flow rate.

Abstract: A patient monitoring system includes a replaceable laminar sensor to be placed on a bed, the sensor including distributed force sensing elements providing output signals to processing apparatus including a near-bed processor and a central processor coupled to the near-bed processor by a wireless communication link. The processing apparatus applies spatial weighting to the sensor output signals to derive the force distribution across the sensor, and processes the force distribution over time to generate patient status information such as patient presence, position, agitation, seizure activity, respiration, and security. This information can be displayed at a central monitoring station, provided to a paging system to alert attending medical personnel, and used to update medical databases. The sensor may be manufactured from layers of olefin film and conductive ink to form capacitive sensing elements.

Abstract: An anti-backlash nut is assembled on a reinforced lead screw for bilateral motion lengthwise of the lead screw as the screw is rotated. A hollow, elongate reinforcing rail extends lengthwise of and surrounds the lead screw. A slot in the rail extends lengthwise of the central axis of the lead screw. The anti-backlash nut comprises two separate portions, each portion having a tongue which extends radially through the slot and has threads engageable with the threads of the lead screw for moving both nut portions in reciprocating motion lengthwise of the rail when the screw is rotated. Spring means are employed for forcing the nut portions apart to urge the flanges of their threads into forcible engagement with the threads of the lead screw to prevent backlash, while the anti-backlash nut translates laterally along the reinforcing rail.
