Abstract: A stirling cycle engine whose cylinder, including a mount, can be easily fabricated and securely attached. The stirling cycle engine of the invention comprises a casing having a cylindrical portion 2; a metallic cylinder 7 coaxially inserted into the cylindrical portion 2 of the casing 1; a piston 15 inserted into the cylinder 7; a drive mechanism 16 for reciprocally driving the piston 15; and a mount 28 which is attached to an outer periphery of the cylinder 7 for fixing the cylinder 7 to the casing 1 and retaining the drive mechanism 16. The mount 28 is made of a material of low heat conductance, constructed separately from the cylinder 7. The mount 28 is attached to the outer periphery of the cylinder 7. Thus, the easier working thereof is resulted, so that the working time is shortened, to thereby improve productivity, and reduce working costs. Further, The heat from the drive mechanism 16 is less likely to transfer to the cylinder 7 via the mount 28.

In order to manage the occurrence of the condition of suds lock, the state of the washing machine related to the suds lock condition during spray pretreatment is determined by one or more of a number of methods. With this information concerning the state of the spray pretreatment process, the occurrence of suds lock can be ascertained and the cycle can be controlled accordingly to minimize negative effects resulting from a prolonged suds lock condition. Additionally, with certain information related to the occurrence of suds lock, steps can be taken during the spray pretreatment portion of the cycle to avoid the condition of suds lock altogether. Using the same primary process for measuring suds lock, load size can also be ascertained. Information about load size can be used to control the wash cycle.

A pressure sensor detects pressure within the evaporative fuel processing system. Negative pressure is introduced from the intake system into the evaporative fuel processing system, whereby the pressure within the evaporative fuel processing system is reduced until the detected pressure becomes equal to a predetermined negative pressure. After the pressure reduction, the negative pressure is introduced from the intake system into the evaporative fuel processing system under predetermined conditions.

The vessel is adapted to receive the lid in a fluid tight communication and to retain a liquid growth medium therein. After a material has been disposed upon the projections, the material is suspended within the vessel containing the liquid growth medium. The material is allowed to incubate for a period of time in which a biofilm forms upon the material. The material is then removed from the liquid growth medium and the biofilms formed thereupon are used to test the efficiency of various biocides.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an integrated crank assembly. Preferably, the integrated crank assembly includes a bottom bracket spindle having an outside diameter of greater than 29 mm, a wall thickness of less than about 2 mm, and a wall thickness to outside diameter ratio of greater than about 11. In one embodiment, the assembly further includes a bottom bracket shell for receiving the spindle and bearing for rotatably supporting the spindle in the shell, where the bearings are mounted directly to the shell. Additionally, preferably the integrated crank assembly features crank arms with an optimized arch roof design. The crank arm includes two crank arm halves that are bonded together. In one embodiment, the wall thickness in each crank arm half varies continually along the length of the crank arm half. The wall thickness is optimized to carry the loads equally along the crank arm. Also, there may be total wall asymmetry throughout the crank arm.

Abstract: A ferrite core partly covered with ceramics members is loaded into an oil hole defined in a pin, and high-frequency induction hardening is effected on the pin while the ferrite core is being held in position by copper wires. At the same time, a magnetic field is generated from the ferrite core to produce a high-frequency induction hardened layer having progressively spreading skirt regions extending from a position in the vicinity of a center in an axial direction of the oil hole toward openings in ends of the oil hole.

Abstract: A method of making metallic iron in which a compact, containing iron oxide such as iron ore or the like and a carbonaceous reductant such as coal or the like, is used as material, and the iron oxide is reduced through the application of heat, thereby making metallic iron. In the course of this reduction, a shell composed of metallic iron is generated and grown on the surface of the compact, and slag aggregates inside the shell. This reduction continues until substantially no iron oxide is present within the metallic iron shell. Subsequently, heating is further performed to melt the metallic iron and slag. Molten metallic iron and molten slag are separated one from the other, thereby obtaining metallic iron with a relatively high metallization ratio.

Abstract: In a method of operating a copper smelting furnace, wherein a ferrous substance containing more than 80 wt. % metallic iron having a specific gravity of 3.0-8.0 and particle diameter of 0.3-15 mm is added to copper smelting slag containing Fe having an oxidation-reduction number of 3+ and to the Fe3O4 in the intermediate layer, thereby deoxidizing the Fe3O4 to FeO, the method reduces the Fe3O4 within the slag layer and the Fe3O4 generated in the intermediate layer between the slag layer and the matte layer. So that their viscosity is reduced and separation rate is increased, thus increasing the yield rate of useful metal, and the problems that originate in the intermediate layer are eliminated.

Abstract: A tool holder includes a holder body which in turn includes a shank portion, a flange portion, and a tool attachment portion; a taper cone fitted to the shank portion; an elastic member interposed between a rear-end face of the flange portion and a front-end face of the taper cone; and a stopper member disposed on the shank portion so as to support a rear-end face of the taper cone. The outer surface of the taper cone is tapered at an angle equal to that at which the wall surface of a taper hole formed in a spindle of a machine tool is tapered. The inner surface of the taper cone and the outer surface of the shank portion are equally tapered at an angle smaller than the angle at which the outer surface of the taper cone is tapered. Through drawing of the holder body, the taper cone expands radially to thereby be tightly held within the taper hole. A spacer is bonded to the end face of the spindle so as to eliminate a gap which is formed between the flange portion and a spindle.
