Abstract: Small form factor pallet assembly, comprising a slotted plate having at opposite ends a mandrel drive assembly and an idler assembly, each with end fittings for engaging the drive and manifold block of a cascade-type scrubber permits scrubbing of SFF substrates by replacement of LFF scrub brushes with the SFF pallet. The SFF pallet slot is oriented below its brush nip so SSF substrates can engage the LFF rotation belt and transport drive. The drive chain is fitted with multi-finger yokes of different sizes so that several sizes of SFF substrates can be scrubbed in the pallet with a single chain. Trolleys for lateral transport of substrates from the input zone to the scrubber lane and from it to the output bay are disclosed. The inventive SFF pallet system meets the changing needs of the hard drive industry, and its retrofit capacity extends the life of already-installed LFF cascade scrubbers.

Abstract: Thermal pole tip protrusion is caused by the materials in and around the head slider expanding during write operations till part of those materials protrude, leading to contact with the rotating disk surface, altering the flying height and often wearing down part of the disk surface. While it is well known that read-write heads expand during writing, the inventors are unaware of anyone else who recognized this situation's significance, particularly as the flying height decreases and the data rates increase, both of which are required for high areal density disk drives. The inventors realized that they could detect the problem at the spin stand level by testing head gimbal assemblies to reliably, and inexpensively, predict the tendency for thermal pole tip protrusion. This leads to selection of head gimbal assemblies, which do not have the thermal pole tip protrusion tendency.

Abstract: Systems and methods in accordance with the present invention can include a tip contactable with a media. In an embodiment, the tip comprises a substantially hollow structure formed of a metal. The tip can be formed by depositing a first metal layer over silicon thereby defining a cantilever structure, depositing a second metal layer at least partially over the first metal layer, and at least partially over a cone structure of the silicon to define the tip structure. The silicon can then be removed from beneath the cantilever and from within the deposited second metal layer by etching, thereby leaving a low-mass metal tip associated with a metal cantilever. An alternative embodiment, the silicon can be removed from beneath the cantilever by etching, but endpointed such that at least a portion of the cone structure remains beneath the second metal layer. The silicon/metal tip can have good wear characteristics and a slightly higher mass.
