Abstract: Lightweight structural elements are fabricated by machining a serpentine groove in a sheet of structural material such as honeycomb composite material, filling the groove with adhesive, and folding the sheet along the groove to achieve a desired configuration. The groove defines one or more tabs and one or more corresponding recesses. The tabs enter corresponding recesses when the sheet is folded and force excess adhesive from the groove which then can be removed to reduce weight of the structural element. In some applications, the use of adhesive may be eliminated entirely. This technique of building lightweight structural elements is particularly attractive in the aerospace industry where weight reduction is of paramount concern.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing of power transmission chain 1 by interconnecting plural link plates 2 with pins 3. Individual pin pairs 3 are arranged and temporarily fixed to places. The link plates 2 are sequentially stacked in layers by press-fitting respective through-holes 4 of the link plates 2 about the respective pin pairs 3, whereby the link plates 2 are interconnected to form a circular chain (an endless loop). Subsequently, the individual pin pairs 3 are released from the temporarily fixed state. Thus, the manufacture of the power transmission chain 1 is decreased in the number of operation steps, so that the chain may be assembled easily.

Abstract: A temperature of a catalyst disposed in an exhaust system is raised to a target bed temperature by supplying an unburned fuel component to the catalyst. A learned value is updated based upon a catalyst bed temperature under a temperature increase control and the target bed temperature so that the learned value corresponds to a difference between the respective temperatures. Whether the learned value is out of a proper range or not is determined whenever the learned value is updated. Abnormality is determined when determination that the learned value is out of the proper range is made over several successive updates of the learned value.

Abstract: A heating system for use on an exhaust system having an exhaust gas passageway, the engine having a cooling system to circulate a cooling fluid to and from the engine, includes a fuel-dosing member for dosing fuel to the exhaust system to trigger a regeneration event. A particulate filter is located on the exhaust gas passageway downstream of the engine, and an oxidation catalyst member is located upstream from the particulate filter. The oxidation catalyst member oxidizes the fuel dosed to increase the temperature of the exhaust gases. The increased temperature causes a regeneration event at the particulate filter, which further increases the temperature of the exhaust gases. A heat exchanger is located downstream of the particulate filter for capturing heat from the exhaust gases. The heat exchanger has an inlet conduit and an outlet conduit for circulating the cooling fluid from the heat exchanger to the engine cooling system.
