Abstract: Systems and methods for efficient microwave drying of extruded honeycomb structures are disclosed. The methods include conveying first and second sets of honeycomb structures in opposite directions through multiple applicator cavities. Each honeycomb structure has a moisture content MC, and the honeycomb structures within each cavity define an average moisture content MCA between 40% and 60% therein. The methods include irradiating the first and second sets of honeycomb structures within the cavities with microwave radiation having an amount of input microwave power PI that results in an amount of reflected microwave power PR from the honeycomb structures, where PR<(0.2)PI. This allows for a relatively high microwave power to be maintained in each cavity. Batch microwave drying methods are also disclosed.

Abstract: A composite, time-delayed, polymer-coated, granulated material for maintaining hydration in plants is formulated to delay acceptance of water in order to operate in drilling, plugging, and disking equipment used for aeration, soil amendment, or both. Whether potted or outdoors, whether relying on a third-material binder or a small, hydrated portion of the polymer itself as a binder, the material may be injected or otherwise placed below the surface of soils. Water is eventually absorbed sufficiently to expose the bulk of the hydrating particles attached to each granule. Addition of the granulated material as a soil amendment resists dehydration normally occurring in plants between waterings, yet its initial delay in hydrating supports water-jet injection and soil integration by resisting premature expansion from hydration.

Abstract: A plant pot includes a pot having an enclosed space and a room defined therein. The room receives soil therein. At least one passage communicates with the room and the enclosed space. A tube is connected to the pot and has a path defined axially therethrough, the path respectively communicates with interior and exterior of the enclosed space. A resistance member is located in one end of the tube and has multiple micro paths which communicate with the interior of the enclosed space. A resistance is formed when exterior air passes through the tube and the resistance member so as to control speed and volume of the exterior air into the enclosed space.

Abstract: A multilayer assembly (10) for use in a vegetated eco-roof or wall system includes layers of progressively permeable geomatrix material. Preferred embodiments of the multilayer assembly are composed of a filtration layer (22) of a nonwoven type positioned between a three-dimensional drainage/aeration base layer (24) and a growing media support layer (26). The sizes and structures of the pores of the base layer, openings of the filtration layer, and pores of the growing media support layer cooperate to permit flow of liquid from the growing media support layer through the base layer and form a gas flow gradient throughout the multilayer assembly. The gas flow gradient permits passage of gas from the base layer to the growing media support layer to mitigate moisture accumulation at the base layer.

At the top of these geomesh layers drip irrigation nozzles are arranged, supplied by a water recirculation pipe, and excess water is collected in a channel, which is then filtered, analysed, supplemented with fertilizer and acids, all under computer control. There is also the option to empty the recirculation circuit and add new water treated by reverse osmosis from a tank.

Abstract: A composite blast door, when used as an exterior door of a protected structure, can significantly decrease the risk of life threatening hazards to interior occupants. The composite blast door is composed of outer sheets of steel, intermediate sheets of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), and a filled core of vaporized aluminum. Rubber gaskets may be used as a buffer layer between the FRP and vaporized aluminum core. Fabrication begins with a door skeleton created from steel framing elements, either hollow structural steel members or channels. Afterwards, the rear panels are attached to the door skeleton in inward order: beginning with the outer steel plate, then the FRP sheet and lastly the optional rubber gasket. The door can now be used as a form to receive the vaporized aluminum filling. After filling, the front panels are attached in the reverse order as the rear panels; rubber first, then FRP, then steel.
