Abstract: Many types of artificial reefs have been deployed in the world's oceans, bays and estuaries. These range from sinking ships to dispersing old building debris. In most approaches, the material placed in the marine environment lacks any nutrients needed for growth or concern regarding proper chemical conditions necessary to start and sustain life. In this discovery, concrete is made from both inorganic and organic components. The inorganic components are selected to include species that will be used to create a receptive surface to start and sustain life. Moreover, other conditions such as pH, chemical toxicity, nutrient levels and biodegradability are considered in the formulation. Additionally, there is an organic component that is part of the concentration mixture which provides trace nutrients and serves to weaken the structures so it will biodegrade over time. The biodegradable concrete slowly releases small quantities of resources (over months and years) providing a steady flux of essential nutrients.

Abstract: A holder attachment for rigging used in fishing. The holder includes an elongate unitary body made of an elastic material and has four laterally facing surfaces and two end surfaces. The two end surfaces each have an outwardly opening cavity therein that also opens outwardly at laterally opposite sides. One of the side surfaces has a pair of longitudinally extending and outwardly protruding ribs defining a slot therebetween that opens axially at the oppositely facing end surfaces. The ribs each have a longitudinally extending cavity to define together an elongate channel. The ribs are configured to be forcibly elastically spread apart to facilitate the reception of a fishing rod or pole therebetween and into the channel, a release of the force spreading the ribs apart enabling the elasticity of the material to return to its original shape to hold the rod in the channel.

Abstract: An active barrier to termites and other insects includes a polymeric or paper substrate; and a copper-carbon matrix, wherein the copper-carbon matrix is incorporated into or is coated onto the polymeric or paper substrate. The resulting combination of the substrate and copper-carbon matrix allows for the creation of films, tapes, coated paper and fabric, or molded or formed parts that interfere with and block the passage or entry beyond the barrier of termites or other insects. Uses may be as diverse as but not limited to underlayment(s) for temporary, semi-permanent or permanent structures as well as films and barriers for walls, roofs of permanent, semi-permanent or temporary structures, or interior spaces, cabinets, or vehicles or protecting equipment, telecommunication gear, electronics or other assets that may be impacted, damaged or degraded by termite or other such insect infestation.

Abstract: Devices according to the present disclosure include humane animal traps that include convenient setting elements and/or safety features. These traps comprise a body, an entrance to the body, a door, a bias mechanism configured to bias the door toward a position, a setting mechanism to hold the door open against its bias and a trigger mechanism configured to release the setting mechanism. The setting elements can comprise features allowing for one-handed setting, such as a handle connected to the door and a setting-base portion connected to the bias mechanism. The safety features can include a connecting mechanism connected to the door, which can be configured to temporarily connect the open door to a portion of the trap body, such that the door cannot swing in accordance with its bias during baiting of the trap.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for collecting and preserving biological specimens, such as human and animal tissues, cell types and subcellular materials for biobanking cryopreservation, comprising the steps of i) placing said specimen in a cooling fluid pre-set at a first predetermined temperature of between ?10° C. and ?60° C. for snap freezing—i.e. rapidly freezing—the specimen, and ii) reducing the temperature of said cooling fluid to a second predetermined temperature suitable for preserving said specimen. The reduction of the temperature in step ii) is performed by a predetermined cooling profile. The invention is further directed to an apparatus (1, 100) for collecting and preserving biological specimens such as human and animal tissues, cell types and subcellular materials for biobanking cryopreservation, comprising a receiving means (2) for receiving a cooling fluid and said specimen, and cooling means (5) to cool said fluid in said receiving means (2).
