  • Patent number: 4836134
Abstract: A device for coating a web of material that travels around a backing roller, with a coating chamber that opens toward the backing roller, and with a liquid-coating intake that has an overflow gap at the paper-intake end and is closed off by a metering unit at the paper-exit end. The coating device allows establishment of a wider range of coating densities (e.g. 4-20 g/m.sup.2) without great expenditure and without coating defects in the coating. The metering unit accordingly pivots independently of the coating chamber (3) around an axis that parallels that of the backing roller and is sealed off by a sealing structure (12) from the structure (6) that demarcates the coating chamber.

Abstract: An improved doctor blade, for use at a downstream end of a pressurized coating material application zone of a paper coater, has a tip portion of a limited length and first thickness and a major body portion of a second and increased thickness. The increased thickness of the major body portion enables the doctor blade to resist flexure caused by variations in pressure of the coating material in the zone, so that the blade tip more uniformly meters and levels coating on a paper web. Also contemplated is an arrangement for clamping the blade at the downstream end of the application zone, in a manner to minimize flexure of the blade in response to variations in pressure of the coating material in the zone.

  • Patent number: 4643127
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a coating device for coating a web which travels over a counter-roller. Upstream of a doctor blade for spreading the coating composition is a coating composition application chamber that includes a resilient tongue e.g. a leaf spring, which extends downstream toward the doctor blade and defines a hydrodynamic pressure slot between the tongue and the web. A pressure space for the coating composition is defined between the downstream end of the tongue and the doctor blade. The tongue is oriented to gradually narrow the height of the hydrodynamic pressure slot between the tongue and the web, and the tongue is resilient or resilently supported for this purpose. An additional retention wall helps close off the pressure space. The pressure space helps avoid air inclusions in the coating composition and creates a quiescent zone upstream of the doctor blade enabling uniform application of the coating.

  • Patent number: 4512279
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a film of liquid pigmented coating material to a moving web of paper at, and between, a low limit of two pounds per ream and a high limit of fifteen pounds per ream. The method and apparatus utilize a reservoir of liquid coating material established between a forward liquid coating material seal and a rearward pneumatically loaded and clamped doctor blade spaced a small distance of a few inches or less from the liquid seal. The reservoir is pressurized in the range of 7 to 150 inches of water so that the coating material is applied under pressure to the moving web and then almost instantaneously wiped by the doctor blade. The reservoir is formed by two relatively movable, sealed members which may be opened for easy cleaning, and may have one or more internal coating material distribution headers at its end opposite the web to uniformly distribute the coating material.

Abstract: A moving web is coated on one side thereof by passing the web through an elongated pool of coating liquid. The pool is replenished by an elongated manifold having an internal, elongated, uniform-cross section, runner conduit which is supplied with liquid from at least one inlet port, located generally at its midpoint. Ink flows from the runner conduit, to the pool, by passing through a plurality of flow-restricting slots. The slots provide greater restriction to flow adjacent the inlet port, than at the two ends of the runner conduit.

  • Patent number: 4469044
Abstract: An apparatus and process for producing fired resistors having uniform resistance characteristics, wherein a continuous closed-loop feedback network detects deviations from standard resistivity values and continuously corrects the composition by varying the proportions of high and low resistance material ratios or blends of such materials being screened onto the substrates (212), and detects deviations in screened-on film thickness for continuously correcting either the speed of operation of a screener assembly (No. 1, No. 2) or the squeegee head pressure in order to obtain a predetermined film thickness. The process continuously adjusts the resistance values through on-the-production-line control of mixture ratios of high and low resistive paints, to produce final fired resistors (170) having the required resistance values, temperature coefficients of resistivity, improved stability, and improved TCR tracking values.

A regulated flow of liquid photopolymerizable resin is supplied from an external reservoir into a manifold which is approximately C-shaped in cross-section and has one at least partially open side face. A gate is disposed before the open side face of the manifold and this gate is vertically adjustable so that together the gate and open side face define an orifice slot or passageway from which a uniform curtain of the resin may flow onto a platemaking surface. The manifold member has a downward projecting wedge shaped lip which acts as a doctor blade on the liquid resin layer deposited as the manifold is moved across the plate-making surface.

  • Patent number: 4442144
Abstract: Method and apparatus for coating a moving web and for independently controlling the coating's width, thickness and uniformity of thickness along the length of the web. A back-up roller supports the moving web on a portion of the roller's periphery. A stationary and pliant smoothing film is positioned adjacent the exposed surface of the web which is supported by the back-up roller. A coating liquid is metered to the confluence of the web and the smoothing film, the metering rate being selected to produce a desired coating width. A pliant pressure generating means, in the form of a membrane or a force web, holds a length of the smoothing film against the moving web with a static force whose magnitude is selected in accordance with a desired coating thickness. The relative position of the back-up roller and the pressure generating means determines the length of coincidence of the moving web, the coating liquid, and stationary smoothing film.

Because the orifice plate may readily be removed and replaced, orifice plates of different heights may be used with the applicator, so that simply by selecting a particular orifice plate for use, the gap in which the liquid seal is established may be made to have a predetermined size.
