  • Patent number: 8887685
Abstract: A method and apparatus for tuning an engine by a modified pod filter or velocity stack using a tunable pod air filter with base and cap members forming a housing that is joined together by a filter membrane to define a plenum or resonance chamber within the housing that contains only air drawn in through the filter. An aperture in the base member passes air to the inlet of an engine. A tuning sleeve is sealingly engaged within the aperture and extends into the plenum to control air flow out of the plenum and into the engine. The tuning sleeve is tubular with a pattern of vents through its surface to control flow rate. The vents may be drilled, punched or otherwise cut through the sleeve to control air flow. After being vented, the sleeve is reinserted into the filter housing and the filter is installed on the engine.

  • Patent number: 8863717
Abstract: An intake device of an internal combustion engine has primary and secondary intake lines for aspirating primary and secondary combustion air, respectively. The primary intake line opens into a primary inlet chamber and the secondary intake line opens into a secondary inlet chamber of a filter housing. In comparison to the primary intake line, the secondary intake line has a configuration such that, in normal engine operation, a flow capacity of the secondary intake line, in comparison to a flow capacity of the primary intake line, is so minimal that secondary combustion air aspirated through the secondary intake line has a negligible effect on the performance of the internal combustion engine. When the primary intake line is closed, the flow capacity of the secondary intake line suffices to supply the internal combustion engine with a minimum combustion air mass flow required for operating the internal combustion engine.

The intake runner assembly includes a first piece and a second piece. The first piece has a first channel that includes a bend. The second piece has a second channel that includes another bend mirroring the bend of the first channel. The first piece is coupled to the second piece such that the first and second channels together form a flow path through the intake runner assembly, and the bends of the first and second channels together form a smooth turn in the flow path.

Abstract: An air intake system for an off-road vehicle includes an intake conduit upstream of a segmented debris removal device and a mail filter element. A baffle is disposed in the intake conduit and extends into the incoming air stream to avoid swirl in the air stream and provide more even air flow distribution into the segments of the segmented debris removal device. The baffle may have two generally parallel elements spaced from one another to reduce mixing of air regions separated by the baffle. The baffle reduces or eliminates vortices that adversely affect air flow into the segmented debris removal device.

Abstract: An intake flow device and system for coupling a turbocharger's compressor intake to an air intake is disclosed. The flow device may be cylindrically shaped, flexible, and configured to fit on an intake flange of the compressor. An intake conduit may be fitted around the flow device, such that the intake conduit may retain a large diameter for increased air flow, rather than necking down to mate with the intake flange. The flow device may incorporate compression ribs around its outer circumference for positively mating with the air intake conduit and may incorporate a recess within its interior for securely mating to a lip on the intake flange. The flow device may also be graduated to direct air from the intake conduit to a smaller diameter compressor intake. Guide vanes may also be provided within the flow device to control and direct air to the inlet of the turbocharger.
