The flow sensing unit is of the displacement piston type and the flow rate is electronically sensed. A single action poppet valve assembly facilitates the use of a self contained power supply for use in remote locations. A microprocessor monitors parameters including pressure, flow rate, temperature and flow volume, and is enabled to activate the control valve to the open or shut positions based upon any combination of the monitored parameters.

The inserted valving element is biased against the seat by a spring or by the fluid when the pressure of fluid at the outlet exceeds the pressure of fluid at the inlet.

    Abstract: A suction inlet pump, useful with pumper firetrucks, has a floating valve element which is normally biased closed by a spring. The motion of the floating valve is also positively determined by a cam engaging a shaft extending from the floating valve element and aligned with the cam. The cam is moved from a first position that positively holds the floating valve element completely closed to a second position which allows the floating valve element to fully open. By selectively positioning the cam between the completely closed and fully opened positions, the amount of water entering the valve may be selected so that the valve functions properly for the particular use to which it is put. The suction inlet valve includes a lockable operating handle which is used to rotate and position the cam. An indicator on the exterior of the valve housing indicates the position of the cam.

The valve assembly includes a cylindrical valve plate, a valve member support structure, a valve spring, and a valve member comprising a valve stem and a valve head. A discharge passageway extending through the valve plate has a frusto-conical valve seat located therein. The valve head also has a frusto-conical design having an angle of divergence smaller than that of the valve seat so that when the valve head is biased against the valve seat by the valve spring, the valve seat sealingly engages a peripheral edge of the valve seat. The valve member support structure maintains the valve member in proper alignment with the valve seat and in engaging relationship with the valve spring.

One improvement comprises a pair of valve sleeves extending, respectively, axially upstream and downstream of the valve seat; each valve has a mouth adapted for mating connection with adjacent fluid-carrying pipe structure. Each sleeve terminates adjacent the valve seat in a diagonal flange formation, and a clamp including a V-shaped collar fits over the sleeve flanges so as to urge the sleeves toward the valve seat and toward one another. A gasket having a U-shaped cross section provides a fluid-tight seal between the sleeves and seat.
