  • Patent number: 4212695
Abstract: A flattened tube of continuous film is opened up by being fed over a mandrel which is floatingly disposed within the tube. As the tube is passing over the mandrel, which serves as a backing, a layer of reinforcing tapes is helically wound thereabout and fixed thereto, whereafter the tube is flattened again. Each side of the tube is then successively provided with a layer of parallel further reinforcing tapes which are anchored by a plastics covering layer that is extruded thereon and pressed thereto.

  • Patent number: 4204897
Abstract: An improved hose splice and a method and apparatus for field splicing large bore hose are disclosed. In the method, the hose covering material is removed to expose the underlying reinforcing material and the ends to be spliced are buffed preparatory to applying the splicing materials. The hose ends are mounted on a unique plaster mandrel that has a sealing elastomer wrapped in a groove at its midsection and uncured elastomeric packing is forced into the juncture of the abutted hose ends. A reinforcement textile fabric material having elastomeric gum on both surfaces is wrapped about the splice area followed by a suitable covering elastomer. The splice area is wrapped with cure and heat tapes and the splicing materials are vulcanized into an integral structure with the existing hose components. The plaster mandrel is finally broken into small pieces that may be washed out of the hose bore upon completion of the vulcanization.

  • Patent number: 4187135
Abstract: A tubular fiber reinforced composite shaft is formed (as described) which integrally incorporates a metal sleeve or connection at the end thereof. Initially a metal sleeve having circumferentially spaced recesses on the outer periphery thereof is positioned upon a segment of a mandrel. Fibrous material bearing a non-solidified resinous material is applied around the mandrel and around the recesses in the sleeve. Portions of the previously applied fibrous material bearing the non-solidified resinous material are pressed into the recesses. Additional fibrous material bearing the non-solidified resinous material is applied to the previously applied fibrous material. The resinous material next is solidified to form a tubular composite shaft whereby a secure torsion-transmitting connection is made with the sleeve, and the mandrel is removed.

  • Patent number: 4172312
Abstract: A method of manufacturing an annular seal for a heat recuperator tube end is disclosed as comprising loosely wrapping without appreciable tension at least one layer of a compressible and resilient blanket of unbonded ceramic fibers about an annular forming mandrel, stabilizing the inner area of the fiber layer, thereafter compressing the fibers to decrease their volume while not destroying the recuperative ability of the fibers to resiliently expand back to a volume substantially greater than their compressed volume when the compression is released by wrapping a retainer exteriorly of the fibers to compress them and to temporarily retain them in compressed condition, the retainer being destructable at operating temperatures of the tube ends of the recuperator in which the seal is to be used. A specific wrapping process utilizing overlapping sheets of heat destructable wrapping material is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4153493
Abstract: A capacitor winding machine includes a first core loading and winding position for winding a predetermined number of turns of two metallized films onto the core prior to moving the winding to a second finishing and ejecting position. Once the predetermined number of windings have been applied to the core in the first position, the winding is moved with the films under tension between the core and their respective supply rolls to the second position and the films are attached to and terminated from a second core which has then been loaded into the first loading position. The first core is then rotated to wind the free ends of the film onto the core which may then be heat or otherwise sealed to complete the metallized plastic film capacitor prior to being ejected from the machine.

  • Patent number: 4106709
Abstract: A helical induction coil of large diameter which is to be served with a protective band is suspended from a driving roller having a substantially horizontal axis of rotation so that the coil axis is substantially horizontal. A serving device is supported on the respective convolution to be served and also on immediately adjacent convolutions at the lowermost region of the coil for advancement in the longitudinal direction of the convolutions. Spreading rollers spread the immediately adjacent convolutions from the respective convolution to permit the serving device to advance. The driving roller frictionally entrains the coil and thus rotates the same about the coil axis and the spreading device is advanced at the same speed as but in the opposite direction than the respective convolution so that the position of the serving device diametrally opposite to the driving roller relative to the coil is maintained.

  • Patent number: 4105488
Abstract: Apparatus for building a raw edge V-belt carcass comprising, a drum about which differing plies of material are wrapped and about which a cord is helically wound. A servicer adapted to supply rubberized fabric is located adjacent the drum. A squeegee adapted to apply a gummy film mounted on a fabric liner is located adjacent the drum and has an applicator roll engageable with a partially formed carcass on the drum. A cord winder mechanism has a head mounted adjacent the drum and has a motor-driven screw for causing the head to move along the length of the drum. The screw motor is tied to the drum motor at a ratio which is infinitely adjustable within limits to vary the pitch of the cord as it is wound on the drum. The cord winder has a mechanism for detecting changes in the tension on the cord and for using that information to cause variations in the speed of a cord let-off roll so that the speed of the cord let-off roll matches the demand caused by the speed of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4058428
Abstract: Pipe coating apparatus which incorporates means for rotating and advancing a pipe along a specified path and an applicator means for placing cementicious materials thereon. The slurry is applied by a mechanism having a top opening which receives cement therein, the opening directing cement to a reinforcing ply which is applied to the pipe. The reinforcing material is delivered through the applicator mechanism. The cement falls on the reinforcing material which normally has a mesh construction. The pipe is advanced and rotated simultaneously. The helical movement of the pipe draws the reinforcing mesh into a gap at the lower side of the pipe above a free rotating parallel roller. A ply of weatherproofing material such as plastic film is placed on the pipe.

  • Patent number: 3953270
Abstract: This invention comprises a method for manufacturing elastomeric high pressure hose having reinforcement in the form of braided or spiral wrapped textile yarns between extruded inner and outer elastomeric layers. The method includes the steps of extruding the inner elastomeric layer over a long flexible mandrel up to about 1000 ft in length coextensively therewith, then progressively freezing portions of the layer and braiding or spiral wrapping a textile reinforcement thereover. The layer is frozen to prevent extrusion of the inner layer during the braiding. Thereafter additional elastomeric and textile layers are applied and the elastomers are vulcanized in an elongated continuous vulcanizer.

  • Patent number: 3948707
Abstract: Track belts designed to fit circumferentially around a pneumatic bladder or tire carcass can be sealed against the ingress of soil and rock between the track shoes attached about the outer periphery of the belt by forming individual and permanent flat sites on the outer circular periphery of the belt so the flat undersurface of each track shoe is nested on a flat shoe site and therefore does not have triangular shaped gaps under its leading and trailing edges. A transverse rib of elastomer, raised from the surface belt between each of the adjacent flat sites further seals the belt in the narrow gaps formed between adjacent track shoes thereby preventing the ingress of soil and rock in these gaps when the shoes pass through a footprint formed as the pneumatic supported system is rolled.
