  • Patent number: 6446305
Abstract: A check mechanism for a motor vehicle door includes a housing secured to either the vehicle frame or the door and a check arm secured to the other one of the vehicle frame and the door. The door check extends into the housing through an opening in the housing. A pair of opposed guides are located within the housing and engage opposite sides of the check arm. Each guide has a generally V-shaped portion, in cross-section, engaging the check arm to generally form a line contact between the guide and the check arm. Spring members such as elastomeric springs bias the guides toward each other and the check arm. The guides and the check arm are adapted to resist movement of the closure relative to the vehicle frame when the guide engages predetermined locations of the check arm. When the door is moved relative to the frame, the guides slide along the exterior surface of the check arm.

  • Patent number: 6205619
Abstract: In a hinge device, right-hand spiral cams formed on a lower portion of a rotational shaft are engaged with right-hand spiral guides grooves, and left-hand inclinated guide protrusions are engaged with left-hand spiral guide grooves formed on an outer circumference of an elevating pipe. When the elevating pipe moves upwardly or downwardly, the load produced by hydraulic pressure can be applied uniformly to the shaft. Therefore, it is improbable to break out or cut out the spiral cam formed on the shaft, the spiral guide grooves on the elevating pipe and the guide protrusion on the stationary pipe. As a result, the hinge device has a relatively long life-time. Also, the hinge device can reduce or prevent damage in respect of life and property.

  • Patent number: 6085384
Abstract: The one-way hinge damper includes a cylindrical housing into a rotor is rotatably inserted. A gap is formed between the rotor and the cylindrical housing which is filled with silicone or a similar viscous fluid for damping the rotation of the rotor. The damping can be increased by forming longitudinal grooves or similar discontinuities in the interior surface of the cylindrical housing and longitudinal passageways on the exterior surface of the rotor. A clutch, to which the output shaft is attached, is biased against an end of the rotor by a wave spring. Both the clutch and the end of the rotor include complementary rotationally alternating ramped surfaces and flat (or longitudinally level) surfaces. Radially extending walls are formed between the higher end of the ramped surfaces and the adjacent flat surface.

  • Patent number: 5896619
Abstract: A door hinge and closure mechanism which includes a hinge unit and a closure unit is described. The hinge and closure units are integral in that a hinge plate of the hinge unit serves as a support for components of the closure unit. Generally, the closure unit applies a pre-load force on the door when the door is in a closed position. When the door is between a closed position and a neutral force position, the closure unit applies a substantially constant closure force on the door. Once the door is opened beyond a first lock position, the closure unit applies resisting forces to the door when the door which act as a deterrent to further opening of the door. Rather than being expanded during door opening as with known spring closure mechanisms, the spring of the above described closure unit is compressed. Compressing the spring is believed to result in a more smooth and constant closure force on the door, as well as extending the useful life of the spring.

Abstract: A door-closer and hinge combination includes a pair of hinge plates adapted respectively to be fixed to a door and door frame, these plates respectively carrying a pair of extensions which are situated along a predetermined hinge axis and which are formed with coaxial bores, the axis of which coincides with the hinge axis, these bores receiving a hinge pin for hingedly connecting the hinge plates to each other. An elongated force-transmittingrod extends parallel to the hinge axis and is guided by a pair of guide sleeves carried by one of the hinge plates for movement parallel to the hinge axis. The force-transmitting rod carries a helical cam-follower which cooperates with a cam slot formed in the other hinge plate, which does not carry the guide sleeves, this other hinge plate preferably being fixed to a door so that upon opening the door the rod is vertically displaced.

  • Patent number: 4073038
Abstract: A tension spring motor for use in a pintle or cartridge like container is employed to return hinged parts to an initial position after having been rotated to a second position. Door hinges are a typical example where a spring automatically returns the door to closed position after it has been opened. To vary the tension in the spring use is made of a pair of notched members housed within the pintle, one being a fixed member and the other being a movable member attached to the spring and rotatable to different positions of adjustment. A wrench hold in the movable member is accessible from the outside through a hole in the fixed member.

  • Patent number: 4073037
Abstract: A pair of leaf hinges have respective knuckles in axial alignment providing respective axially aligned chambers for reception of a pintle serving as a pivot for the hinges. The pintle is provided with a keying rib, and grooves in the respective knuckles and are in alignment only when the hinge is rotated to extreme position to permit insertion of the pintle and the keying rib into operative position within the knuckles. When the hinge is installed on a door and the door mounted on a frame, the door can not normally be swung to a position wherein the grooves are in alignment so that the pintle can not be removed from the hinge as long as the door stays in mounted position on the frame.

  • Patent number: 3975794
Abstract: A cam rise hinge has a swingable strap portion which is cammed up relative to a stationary butt portion when a door on which the strap portion is mounted is swung towards its open position. A coiled wire torsion-compression spring is positioned and mounted so as to be compressed and simultaneously twisted when the strap portion is cammed up. This generates two different forces aiding each other and gravity in swinging the strap portion and door back toward closed position.

  • Patent number: 3972090
Abstract: A springless self-latching hinge is provided having a pair of hinge members pivotally connected by a hinge pin and formed of resilient material configured to snap the hinge closed and to releasably maintain the hinged closed. The first hinge member includes a pair of raised, spaced hinge pin receiving knuckles and a boss protruding toward the pin. The second hinge member has a hinge knuckle incompletely encircling the pin and forming a bearing sleeve. A portion of the bearing sleeve forms an exterior, concave cam which is compressed against the boss as the hinge is operated. The compression between the boss and the sleeve is a maximum just prior to closure of the hinge and is maintained at less than maximum when the hinge is fully closed. The hinge thus snaps closed after partial closure and is held releasably closed until sufficient effort is exerted to rotatably open the hinge against the force of the resilient members.

  • Patent number: 3971099
Abstract: An improved stop attachment removably connectable to a hinge assembly for adjustably limiting the degree of angular movement of a hinge assembly, the stop attachment including a housing assembly and a stop sleeve. The stop sleeve is movable with respect to the housing assembly for selectively positioning a first and a second stop surface formed on the stop sleeve with respect to a first and a second stop surface, respectively, formed on the housing assembly. In each selectively adjusted position of the stop sleeve and the housing assembly, at least one of the first stop surfaces of the stop sleeve and the housing assembly engages a first hinge leaf of the hinge assembly and at least one of the second stop surfaces of the stop sleeve and the housing assembly engages a second hinge leaf of the hinge assembly thereby selectively and adjustingly limiting the degree of angular movement of the first and the second hinge leaves.

Abstract: An auxiliary lock is disclosed which is intended to be used as a night lock in combination with the hinge of a conventional door. The device includes an elongated cross bar and a plurality of adjustable stop members which project from and are threadedly received in said cross bar and are adapted to engage the surface of the door and the door jamb or wall. The cross bar also carries a spring-loaded connecting means which is adapted to be engaged with the hinge pin of a conventional door hinge to thereby hold the cross bar in place on the hinge and the stop members in engagement with the door and door jamb. The bar is pivotally connected to the hinge pin by the connecting means so that it may be rotated 90.degree. to permit normal operation of the door, and in this regard secondary stop members are provided to function as normal door stop members when the device is in its inoperative or unlocked position.
