  • Patent number: 7438111
Abstract: A storm curtain assembly (10) includes a fabric curtain (11) which may be wound onto a roll (17) and stored within a canister housing (16) when not in use, and substantially unwound from the roll (17) to cover an opening in a building. When unwound, a lock bar (18) is engaged by the hooks (27) of the lock blocks (21) carried by the housing (16) and by lock tabs (22) carried by the housing (16). The lock tabs (22) extend through slots (28) formed in curtain (11) so as to be able to engage the lock bar (18). As such, the roll (17) and other drive or counterbalance components (15) carried in the housing (16) are protected from any forces on the curtain (11), such forces being absorbed by the housing (16).

Abstract: The retractable panel is a length of flexible sheet material rolled onto a roller, with the roller driven by at least one spirator retractor. A spirator may be installed at each end of the roller, in the case of larger, longer, and/or heavier panels. Two such assemblies may be installed in a single housing, in mirror image to one another to operate in opposite directions from a single central location. Decorative and/or other illumination may be included on the roller housing, and the extension of the panels may be motor driven. The lighting and/or motor operation may be directly or remotely controlled. The retractable panel may be adapted to a number of different uses and environments, e.g., as retractable protective wall pads for installation in elevators or other close confines, as vehicle covers, as permanently installed or portable advertising or informational banners, etc.

  • Patent number: 7337822
Abstract: A retractable barrier includes a rollup or otherwise retractable panel that can extend between two spaced apart support members. When not in use, the panel can retract onto one of the support members to permit passage. The barrier provides substantial impact resistance by having the reactive force of the impact transfer directly between the barrier's retractable panel and its support members without having to rely on the strength of the panel's take-up roller or the strength of the roller's anti-rotation mechanism. This can be accomplished by having a slot-engaging stop member mounted directly to the panel itself. The stop member is preferably a pipe, rod, bar or some other vertically elongate member that can broadly distribute an impact reactive force over the height of the panel. In some embodiments, the barrier can be set for various doorway widths by simply repositioning the stop member's location on the retractable panel.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a modular roll-up partition assembly, such as a rolling protective shutter, implementing an improved tension adjustment mechanism for torsion springs used in roll-up partition assemblies. In one embodiment, the roll-up partition assembly of the present invention includes a tension adjustment mechanism to adjust the tension of a torsion spring connected between a support rod and the partition support member. The tension adjustment mechanism rotates the support rod to move the end of the torsion spring connected to the rod relative to the end of the torsion spring connected to the partition support member. Unlike previous roll-up partition assemblies which permitted adjustment of the torsion spring tension only in increments of a full rotation of the support member, the tension adjustment mechanism facilitates fine adjustment of the torsion spring in increments of less than a full rotation of the partition support member.

Abstract: A retractable screen apparatus having an upper bracketing component and a lower bracketing component mounted to the upper and lower portions of an opening respectively. Each bracketing component has a connection portion that is connected to upper and lower connection regions of a substantially vertical screen dispenser. A handle attached to the screen of the screen dispenser displaces the screen to a retracted position where the upper and lower laterally extended edges of the screen are contained in slideways in the upper and lower bracketing components. A connection system employing a double threaded screw allows the apparatus to be retrofitted to existing door moldings having a regular shaped surfaces.

Abstract: A roller screen includes a gauze screen, a roll-up mechanism for the gauze screen, a pull beam connected to the free end of the gauze screen, guides for guiding the pull beam and the side edges of the gauze screen. Furthermore spring hooks are used which cooperate with cams present on the ends of the pull beam. The spring hooks are mounted in the ends of the guides remote from the roll-up mechanism on a base which fits in the end of a guide. The spring hooks extend substantially in a longitudinal direction of the guides. The spring force of the hooks can be adjusted by an adjusting screw mounted in the base. The adjusting screw extends substantially perpendicularly to the hook and is accessible via an opening formed in a side wall of the guide.

  • Patent number: 6279639
Abstract: A separating mechanism 13 is provided which includes a winding shaft 19 that is rotatably supported in a housing 14. A separating net 15 can be wound on the winding shaft 19 and can be stretched in the space between the housing 14 of the separating mechanism 13 and the roof lining of a passenger car. Since the winding shaft 19 generates a greater torque that the user must counteract with increasing draw-off of the separating net 15, a drive mechanism 18 is provided that provides that from a predetermined draw-out length onward the drive torque for the winding shaft 19 is switched to a reduced level. This switch-over is either brought about as a second, weaker drive spring 39 is activated, or as a second drive spring 93 is switched parallel to the drive spring 38 for the winding shaft 19. The two auxiliary springs 39, 93 operate, however, only over a limited turning range of the winding shaft 19.

Abstract: A roll-up overhead door assembly which is selectively moved up and down to open and close an opening and which is guided along sides of the opening by columns, the door having an open position, a closed position and a cleaning position. The door includes a drum positioned proximate the top of the opening, a flexible door panel connected to the drum and a drip guard. The door panel is attached to the drum such that when the door assembly is in an open position the door panel is wound around the drum. The drip guard partially surrounds the drum and is positioned and sized to catch residue falling from the drum or door panel overhead. The door panel is sized such that in the closed position the door panel is connected to a point on the drum so that the panel does not significantly overlap the drum. The door further includes columns on opposed sides of the opening and surrounding the guides.
