Abstract: In a fracturing application a packer for a given zone to be fractured is reinforced during fracturing with an insert that is preferably a sleeve. During times of high collapse pressure loading, the sleeve provides the needed support. When fracking is over the liner sleeve is caused to disappear. The preferred material is controlled electrolytic materials but other materials that can disappear when the anticipated loading is diminished can also be used. The disappearing can be motivated chemically or thermally among other contemplated methods. As a result, there is a larger available bore when production is ready to start.

  • Patent number: 8915305
Abstract: A packer tool has safety devices to prevent premature and reverse setting and release operations. The safety devices are independent of shear-pin safety systems. Confined annular segments prevent a setting actuator piston from moving absent tool-setting hydraulic pressure. The setting pressure first moves a cylinder in an opposite direction to unroof the segments allowing them to exit confinement and free the piston to set the packing and the anchor slips. Release safety pins extend radially inward from a packing-holder collar into short slots formed on a mandrel surface, preventing the mandrel from being turned. Previous set motion causes the pins to leave the slots thereby freeing the mandrel to turn only after the tool has been set. A third safety device comprises an expanded ring which is dragged by the release cone during release motion until it lodges in a circumferential groove in the mandrel, locking against reverse movement.

  • Patent number: 8881802
Abstract: An annular seal for a setting tool in a packer tieback extension comprises a downhole oriented packer cup assembly. As the tool is run in the hole the packer cup flexes as the rising hydrostatic pressure equalizes across the cup into what started as a zone with atmospheric pressure inside the packer tieback extension. Once the pressure is equalized the self energizing feature of the packer cup maintains grit and debris in the mud from entering the tieback extension where the spring loaded dogs of the setting tool are held in a retracted position. If the seal fails to equalize and allows a large differential across the setting sleeve from the surrounding annulus, the rupture disc breaks inwardly into the tieback extension so that pressure is equalized. If the packer is never set after being lowered to depth and the pressure from the tieback extension is equalized into the annulus.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a swellable packer and a process for manufacturing swellable packers that may be used for sealing off chambers within a well bore. Various embodiments of the present invention include a variety of in situ molding techniques, such as injection molding and compression molding. Furthermore, some embodiments of the present invention include centering end caps about a tube and securing the end caps to the tube. In these embodiments, the swellable packer can then be molded about the tube and the position of the end caps can be used to determine the position of the outer surface of the swellable polymer with respect to the tube.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for stimulating a sub-commercial geothermal well, comprising the steps of drilling a stimulating well; isolating a corresponding zone in said stimulating well by means of a plurality of vertically spaced swell packers that are swellable when contacted by subterraneously heated geothermal brine present in said stimulating well and are resistant to the high temperature of said brine; injecting stimulating fluid into said stimulating well such that it will flow only through a zone of said well that is not isolated; and allowing said stimulating fluid to exit said well from a non-isolated zone located at a desired depth into a surrounding geological formation in order to hydraulically reopen a fracture or a system of fractures within said formation at said desired depth that will be connected with said existing well to be stimulated. The present invention is also directed to apparatus for stimulating a sub-commercial geothermal well.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a downhole support device (100) for use in a wellbore and which is adapted to be run into the wellbore through or run on an elongate member string (2) such as on a string of tubulars, a coiled tubing string or a slickline. The downhole support device comprises an inflatable element (102), which in use is adapted to be selectively connectable to the elongate member string and is further adapted to apply a biasing force in the direction of the wellbore walls. The inflatable element has an inlet (104) for receiving fluid and/or fluidized solids. The support device is further adapted to be selectively disconnectable from the elongate member string.

Abstract: A downhole tool, such as a fracture plug used during a fracture operation, installs in a downhole tubular, such as casing. The tool has a mandrel with a sealing element disposed thereon between uphole and downhole ends. Slip assemblies on the mandrel can be moved to engage the downhole tubular. The uphole assembly has inserts composed of ceramic material, and the downhole assembly has inserts composed of a metallic material. When the tool is used as a bridge plug, the uphole assembly supports the sealing element compressed, and the downhole assembly supports fluid pressure downhole of the tool. In one particular embodiment, the metallic material is a powdered metal material, such as a sintered-hardened powdered metal steel having a balance of iron, an admixture of carbon, and alloy components of molybdenum, chromium, and manganese.

Abstract: A seal, in certain embodiments, includes a seal body having a groove on a face of the seal body. The face is configured to contact a surface of a separate component to form a seal. The groove interrupts continuity of the face between a first face portion and a second face portion. In addition, the groove enables material deformation laterally between the first face portion and the second face portion. Furthermore, the groove increases contact stress at corners between opposite walls of the groove and the respective first and second face portions.

Abstract: The disclosed hydrocarbon lift system and method prohibits water-coning in production of oil from a subterranean reservoir to the earth's surface. The system comprises a well bore with a first and a second section. The first section has perforations which draw a first fluid into and up the well bore based on a negative pump pressure applied thereto. The second section has perforations which draw a second fluid into the well bore based on a differential pressure between the pump pressure and a lower induced pressure therein. The system also comprises a venturi structure fixtured into the well bore. The venturi structure has flaring ends connected by a constricting throat defining perforations therein. The constricting throat perforations draw the second fluid through the second section perforations into the venturi throat in response to the lower induced pressure in the second section created by an increased first fluid velocity there through.
