    Abstract: A continuous multistage process for separating a partially water soluble organic component from a slurry containing an insoluble solid, a partially water soluble organic component and optionally water. In this process, the slurry is continuously fed to a tower or column equipped with a suitable vapor/liquid contact device. Energy is applied at a point below the vapor/liquid contact device. Vapors containing the partially soluble organic component exit the tower or column overhead and the inorganic solid is recovered at the bottom of the tower or column. This application of distillation technology to slurries is particularly advantageous in that a more efficient separation of that solid material from the partially soluble organic component is obtained. The improved separation efficiency can be utilized to either lower separation cost and/or to affect a more complete separation in order to obtain a solid material with a lower residual amount of the organic component.

Feed liquid (21) containing volatile contaminants is charged batchwise to a pre-chamber (20) at sub-atmospheric pressure which is then sealed (valve 22) from feed supply (21). Volatile contaminants are extracted from the charge in prechamber (20) via line (26) and entrainment device (32). Pre-chamber (20) is subsequently placed in communication (via valve 25) with evaporator (1) whereby to equilibrate pressure between evaporator (1) and pre-chamber (20).

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for separating low molecular weight components from complex aqueous organic mixtures. The process includes preparing a separation solution of supercritical carbon dioxide with an effective amount of an entrainer to modify the solvation power of the supercritical carbon dioxide and extract preselected low molecular weight components. The separation solution is maintained at a temperature of at least about 70.degree. C. and a pressure of at least about 1,500 psi. The separation solution is then contacted with the organic mixtures while maintaining the temperature and pressure as above until the mixtures and solution reach equilibrium to extract the preselected low molecular weight components from the organic mixtures. Finally, the entrainer/extracted components portion of the equilibrium mixture is isolated from the separation solution.

The contaminated water is fed into a stripper column, operated under a deep vacuum, to enable the water to enter the column at its boiling point. Steam, as a vaporizing gas, strips the impurities out of the water and the overhead vapor phase is compressed to boost it to a higher pressure, so it can be condensed to vaporize part of the bottoms stream from the column. Since the bottoms stream is mostly water, the vapor generated is the steam used to strip impurities from the water.

This concentric arrangement permits the heat generated in the first column to flow outwardly into the second column, thereby improving its efficiency and reducing the heat loss. Typically, the inner first column is a high pressure rectifying column, and the outer concentric column is a stripping column. In an alternate embodiment, the inner column can simply be a portion of a high pressure distillation process, and the outer column is a portion of a lower pressure distillation column.

    Abstract: A water purification process is described for the removal of ammonia and optionally one or more acid gases from wastewaters such as coke-plant or coal conversion wastewaters. The process involves adding alkali to these wastewaters in amounts sufficient to react with fixed ammonia salts present in the wastewater and to enable substantial amounts of the ammonia to be evolved upon distillation, and subjecting the thus treated wastewater to distillation to remove substantial amounts of the ammonia and acid gases present from the wastewater. This process is achieved by two separate and successive distillations. In this process, the vapor streams being withdrawn from the first and/or second distillations are subjected to an impurity removal process to thereby produce a vapor stream substantially reduced in impurities, and useful as a stripping vapor in this process, and then reusing this vapor stream as a stripping vapor in the process.

By utilizing the method outlined above, it is possible to use the excess heat of the mechanical vapor recompression system to produce an outflow of essence enriched vapors.

A part of the heat energy to operate the apparatus is provided by heat exchange of a recycled bottom liquid stream with an overhead vapor stream which has been compressed with a concurrent increase in temperature. Such an apparatus may be used to fractionate a C.sub.4 hydrocarbon feed.

This system achieves a very high efficiency through the use of vapor compression in conjunction with three heat exchangers: a reboiler which condenses the hot vapors compressed by a vapor pump and uses the heat given up by the condensing vapor to boil bottoms liquid to produce vapor within the stripper, a distillate heat exchanger which recovers heat from the distillate stream, and a bottoms heat exchanger which recovers heat from the outgoing bottoms effluent. This particular component configuration and process results in an exceptionally stable and reliable operation requiring the continuous control of only one parameter, reboiler temperature, while fixing all other process variables.

The vapor phase is compressed in a compressor 7 to the pressure of the column and reinjected at the bottom of the column, whereas the liquid phase is removed.With the process, energy can be saved in pressurized distillation columns, for example in petrol stabilization columns.

    Abstract: A tank for receiving water to be desalinated supports a vacuum pump at the upper end thereof. The inlet of the pump communicates with the tank for reducing the interior of the tank to a subatmospheric pressure and the outlet of the pump communicates with heat transfer coils submerged just below a water level in the tank. The vacuum pump has an outer casing defining a heating area which traps the heat generated by operation of the pump. An inlet for water to be desalinated leads through the heated area around the pump and is discharged above the water level at the heat transfer coils for vaporization of the incoming water. The heat transfer coils communicate with condensing coils leading downwardly in the tank. The heat transfer coils are supported on a float and have an inlet and outlet arrangement providing for even distribution of vapor.
