The feed screw delivers fluid to be dispensed from the fluid inlet to the outlet port. The fluid inlet is preferably elongated in a direction along a longitudinal axis of the feed screw to enhance consistency in material flow through the cartridge. The feed screw is preferably driven by a closed-loop servo motor to achieve high-performance dispensing resolution. The assembly is preferably compatible with fixed-z and floating-z cartridges. A optional vented dispense tip, in combination with the fluid pump, allows for repeatable deposit of fillet patterns while maintaining optimal consistency.

A cleaning tool may be provided for removing residual material from the inner surfaces of the tip. In one embodiment, a plurality of nozzle tips are capable of being interchangeably used with a single main body of the fluid nozzle. Thus, replacement nozzle tips can be used when: (a) a nozzle tip effectiveness deteriorates due to wear, and (b) a fluid to be sprayed requires a nozzle tip with a different configuration. Further, in one embodiment, the fluid nozzle of the present invention provides an annular plenum between a recess wall of the main body, and an exterior portion of the nozzle tip. Such a plenum is used to enhance the volume and turbulence within an air chamber of the spray device prior to the air exiting for atomizing the fluid being sprayed. Thus, such enhanced turbulence provides a more uniform air velocity exiting the air chamber.

    Abstract: A non-plugging nozzle and self-cleaning drilling tool incorporating the nozzle is provided. The nozzle has a body that defines a central passageway extending axially from the top to the bottom of the body. The central passageway defines an inlet orifice at the top and an exit orifice at the bottom. A side passageway extends through the side wall of the nozzle and communicates with a cylindrical portion of the central passageway, the intersection of which defines a side inlet orifice that is substantially square. Because the intersection is substantially square, particles may not become trapped within the nozzle and plug the side passageway. When incorporated into a drilling tool, particularly a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit, the drilling tool becomes self cleaning. The side passageway of the nozzle is directed at the voids formed in the cutting face of the drilling tool creating a cross flow through the voids and preventing accumulation and balling therein.

Flow to the nozzle is closed by a diaphragm valve comprising flexible elastomeric material which seats against the upstream end of the exit tube. An important feature is that glue actuator pressure is balanced, and smooth operation and glue delivery are achieved, by a rocker arm above the glue valve which, when the valve is closed by pushing the elastomeric material against the glue delivery tube, releases pressure on the glue at an upstream point in the glue plenum.
