The adjustable transfer tool enables establishing uniform and substantially precise throat heights for a multiplicity of thin film transducers disposed on said sliders. To allow the desired adjustment, the transfer tool incorporates slot means by which the shape of the surface of the tool on which the bar of sliders is mounted can be modified so that the slider transducers assume a collinear array across its entire length for the lapping process. Adjustment is accomplished by manual means, such as by a screw or a tapered pipe plug, or by electrical means, such as a piezoelectric actuator, in conjunction with a computer or microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 5048808
Abstract: A clamping device for clamping a workpiece and, in particular an irregularly-shaped workpiece is disclosed. The device includes a pair of movable jaws. Each of the jaws carries at least one clamping member, including a clamping surface, thereon for movement therewith. At least one of the clamping members is movably mounted on a respective jaw for rotational and lateral sliding movement relative to the other clamping member in response to the shape of the workpiece clamped therebetween. The clamping surfaces are shaped, so as to matingly engage one another when moved towards one another without the workpiece therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4969638
Abstract: A clamping apparatus having a pair of vise jaws. A pair of concave recesses are formed laterally of each other in the face of the vise jaw. Each concave recess has a base with an arcuate groove therein. A semi-circular clamping member is disposed in each concave recess. The clamping member has a convex surface complementary to the concave recess. The clamping member further has an arcuate rib thereabout which is complementary to the arcuate groove in the clamping member. The upper surface of the clamping member has a semi-circular boss thereon which forms a step-like relationship to the upper surface. A pair of retaining covers are disposed on the upper surface of the jaw and extend over the clamping member so as to abut the semi-circular boss. The retaining cover secures the clamping member to the jaw and also prevents processing chips from falling between the concave recess in the jaw and the convex surface of the clamping member.

  • Patent number: 4950346
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for holding a generally cylindrical workpiece for honing or otherwise machining an internal bore. The workpiece is held by a gripping surface over most of the innermost turn of a spirally wound spring and coil. The workpiece is grasped circumferentially over its outer surface without excess contact pressure at any particular point. A tendency of the machining operation to rotate the workpiece serves to secure the workpiece more tightly in position by tightening the outer turns of the spring band coil. A rotatable tensioning member acts under the influence of a biasing spring to decrease the diameter of the innermost turn of the spring band coil to bring the gripping surface into contact with the workpiece. A method for adapting the work-holding apparatus to smaller or irregularly shaped workpieces consists of molding an annular piece around the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4781086
Abstract: An adjustable wrench particularly useful to facilitate ease of installation and removal of fluid fittings in and from a fluid system. The wrench includes an elongated handle threadedly cooperating with a body member. The body member has a pair of opposed clamping faces defining a clamping cavity adapted to receive an associated fitting. Relative rotation between the handle and body portion axially advances and retracts a smooth end face of the handle into and out of abutting engagement with a side wall of the fitting. A cutout region in the wrench body is adapted to receive one branch of an associated tee or cross type fluid fitting. The subject wrench readily facilitates clamping engagement of a fitting while coupling nuts are run up on or backed off of the fitting branches by conventional means.

Abstract: A jig for bending a hockey stick blade is made of a backing plate and two spacers secured on one of its surface. The backing plate has two slots extending between the two spacers. A pressure plate located between the spacers is connected to the backing plate through the slots by a pair of threaded rods so as to slide along the slots. Tightening nuts are mounted on both rods. The hockey blade is adapted to abut on one side, at both end, against the spacers and on the other side of the blade, the pressure plate applies a pressure by tightening the nuts. The apex of the curve can be located anywhere along the blade and the plane of the face of the blade can also be tilted.

  • Patent number: 4732373
Abstract: A clamping apparatus includes two pairs of rotatable and substantially cylindrical clamping elements positioned on jaws of the clamping apparatus. One pair of clamping elements is located on a fixed jaw, and the second pair is located on a movable vise jaw. The jaws are supported on a generally rectangular base which has a pair of end portions. One end portion is a first upstanding flange formed integrally with the base. The second end portion is the fixed jaw. A two-way threaded rod is carried by the movable vise jaw and one threaded end extends through a cooperating threaded recess in the first upstanding flange. The movable vise jaw has a transverse notch located in its bottom to receive a hollow cylindrical nut which is internally threaded in a first direction. Adjacent to the cylindrical nut is a friction ring. The second threaded end of the threaded rod, threaded in the second direction, is threaded into the cylindrical nut.
