  • Patent number: 7131649
Abstract: A metal gasket is formed by first and second metal base plates. The first metal base plate has a first main bead, and first outer and inner sub-bead sections formed outside and inside the first main bead and projecting outwardly in a direction opposite to the first main bead. The second metal base plate has a second main bead, and second outer and inner sub-bead sections formed outside and inside the second main bead and projecting outwardly in a direction opposite to the second main bead. A distance between the second outer and inner sub-bead sections is greater than that between the first outer and inner sub-bead sections. When the first and second metal base plates are assembled, the second outer and inner sub-bead sections entirely sandwich the first outer and inner sub-bead sections therebetween to substantially abut against each other at side peripheries thereof.

Abstract: A novel gasket is provided for filling the space between two mating surfaces on components in an automotive transmission. The gasket includes one or more patches of silicone integrated into a portion of the gasket for providing one or more channels through the gasket, having leak proof seals at the ends of the channel. Bolt passage holes are spaced in the gasket to register with corresponding bolt holes in the mating surfaces. A channel aperture passes through the portion of the gasket augmented with the silicone patch, providing a channel between the mating surfaces. The ends of the channel define leak proof seals between the gasket and the mating surfaces for providing a leak proof fluid flow channel between the mating surfaces.

Abstract: A multilayer metal gasket has a pair of outer active layers separated by an intermediate layer. The outer active layers are formed with at least one pair of aligned apertures and sealing beads surrounding the apertures in radially outwardly spaced relation thereto presenting laterally opposed sealing surfaces of the active layers of predetermined spacing or thickness when the gasket is in a compressed free state. The intermediate layer extends radially inwardly beyond the apertures and is provided with a cold formed stopper portion having a thickness greater than the combined material thicknesses of the intermediate layer and outer active layers but less than the thickness of the sealing beads. The stopper portion is cold formed under a compressive load exceeding the compressive load required to deform the sealing beads beyond their elastic limit, thereby preventing irreversible damage to the sealing beads.

Abstract: A gasket includes an intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. The flanged portions include a plurality of waves to increase forces to generate the seal. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. Abstract: A cylinder head gasket is formed of a metal plate, a sealing bead formed in the metal plate around a liquid hole, and a peripheral bead formed in the metal plate to extend around a periphery of the metal plate. At least a part of the peripheral bead is set to have a surface pressure lower than that of the sealing bead when the gasket is tightened by that the height of the peripheral bead is lower than that of the sealing bead or the width of the peripheral bead is greater than that of the sealing bead. Thus, when the gasket is tightened, substantially uniform and optimum load share can be obtained on the peripheral bead and the sealing bead for the fluid hole.

Abstract: A cylinder head gasket includes a pair of first and second gasket substrates. The gasket substrates are each formed with a first and a second projection which project in opposite directions, with a clearance therebetween. According to a first aspect of the invention, each projection undergoes a plastic deformation toward the clearance defined between them when the gasket substrates are held sandwiched between a cylinder head and a cylinder block, each projection undergoing a magnitude of plastic deformation which is greater or lesser in accordance with the magnitude of a surface pressure therebetween. According to a second aspect of the invention, each projection is formed with a radially central part which projects toward the radially central part of the other projection and which is in close contact with each other continuously in the circumferential direction.

Abstract: The present invention provides a sealing bead in which linearly acting surface pressures are generated at its portions which does not directly contribute to generating the linearly acting surface pressures in the conventional sealing bead, thereby enhancing the efficiency for generating linearly acting surface pressures with respect to a displacement amount of height of the sealing bead. A peripheral portion of a sealing bead between a bent position and an opening edge is bent up or down so as to form a pre-determined degree of an angle with respect to a corresponding flange surface. With this structure, linearly acting surface pressures are generated at the opening edge that, in the conventional bead, does not directly contribute to generating linearly acting surface pressures.
