  • Patent number: 6364375
Abstract: A window securing device (36) for use in a double-hung sash window assembly having upper and lower sash window frames (14,16) installed for relative overlapping vertical sliding movement, said upper sash frame (14) having a recess into the interior of a vertical facial member of the window. The device (36) includes a housing (38) having a front faceplate opening (51) into a cavity (50) therein and a means for retaining the housing (38) in the recess with the faceplate (42) covering the edges of the recess. A pawl (40) mounted in the cavity (50) of the housing (38) is spring biased into an extended position where the lowermost arresting edge protrudes through the opening (51). In effect, the extended pawl (40) blocks the pathway of a top portion of the lower sash (16) for preventing further upward movement thereof.

  • Patent number: 6347818
Abstract: A hold open arm assembly for a non-vertically hinged door prevents a door for a roof or floor opening from closing unexpectedly and allows one-handed operation. The assembly includes an elongated arm that bears directly against a stop aligned with the axis of the arm when a closing force, such as a wind load, is applied directly to the door. The arm has a guide that engages a guide slot in a bracket attached to the door. The guide slot is tapered and widens near the stop. When a closing force is applied to a handle connected to the arm, the guide moves parallel to the guide slot and the arm clears the stop, allowing the door to close. When the closing force is applied to the door, and not the handle, the guide moves perpendicular to the guide slot so that the arm engages the stop. The guide is provided with a low friction roller bearing for smooth operation.

  • Patent number: 6279979
Abstract: A vehicle has a vehicle body with a tailgate rotatably secured to the vehicle body for rotation about a generally horizontal axis between a closed generally vertical position and an open generally horizontal position. A pair of relatively spaced first support members are secured to the vehicle body and the tailgate for supporting the tailgate in the open position. Two pairs of latches, each having a first latch element secured to the vehicle body and a second latch element secured to the tailgate, cooperate to have each first latch element engage the second latch element when the tailgate is in the closed position. A pair of removable elongated supplementary tailgate supports each have one portion removably secured to the first latch element and a second portion removably secured to the second latch element when the tailgate is in the open position. The supplementary tailgate supports are preferably substantially rigid and may be made of metal.

  • Patent number: 6161252
Abstract: A door holder assembly used to maintain a door in an opened position. The assembly is made up of a door stop, a locking plate mounted on the door and a floor mounted door holder. The door stop and the door holder are fixed to the floor while the locking plate is fixed to the lower portion of the door and is positioned to engage the door holder when the door is opened. The locking plate has two joined segments one of which is planar and flat while the other of which has a right angled groove. Depending on the vertical elevation of the door's bottom above the floor, the same locking plate can be mounted to the door in one of two different positions. If the elevation is slight then the right angled groove portion is mounted on the vertical front door surface. If the elevation is larger and sufficient space exists, the locking plate may have the right angled groove portion mounted to the lower edge of the door between the door and the floor.

  • Patent number: 5536052
Abstract: A tumbler is pivotably mounted in a sash lock housing. In an extended position, an end of the tumbler limits movement of a window sash. A post in the housing extends through an eccentric bore in the tumbler. The bore defines a shelf or protrusion that urges the tumbler into engagement with the housing, thereby preventing over-rotation of the tumbler in the extended position. A spring urges the tumbler toward the extended position and cooperates with the protrusion to urge the tumbler into engagement with the housing.

  • Patent number: 5492381
Abstract: A retractable door or window stop member includes a barrel which defines a recess in a top surface. A spigot is pivotable about a first axis extending transversely of the recess. An adjustment means enables the spigot to be pivoted between its first and second positions. A spring means is in the recess and acts between the spigot and the barrel to urge the spigot to and thereby tending to positively retain the spigot in its first position. The spring means is secured in relation to the barrel between the first axis and the second axis at each of the opposite sides of the recess, the spring means having an intermediate position which extends towards the first axis and which engages a protrusion on the underside of the spigot to thereby urge the spigot to its first position.

  • Patent number: 5473841
Abstract: There is disclosed a device for limiting the swinging of a door hingedly connected to a second wall adjacent to the first wall. The device includes a bracket adapted to be mounted on the door hinge for swinging about its axis, as well as first and second arms pivotally connected to the bracket for swinging toward and away from the door and adjacent wall, respectively. A strut extends between the arms to limit swinging the first arm toward the second arm when the second arm is against the second wall, and one end of the strut is movable away from a stop on the second arm to permit the door to be opened and/or the arms to be stored next to one another.

  • Patent number: 5340172
Abstract: A security bar system for use on both "inward" and "outward" opening doors that provides security by preventing forcible entry. The system preferably comprises an elongated, telescoping, bar arranged to extend horizontally across and adjacent to a pair of double doors. Inward opening doors are secured by mounting the security bar on opposing hinges, modified by incorporating docking ferrules into which right angle mounting dowels existing at each end of the reinforcing bar can be securely inserted, effectively barricading the doors closed. For outward opening double doors, where the hinge pins are typically located on the outside, door jamb mounting brackets in lieu of hinge mounted docking ferrules, are securely fastened to both sides of the door jamb material on the interior at approximately the same height as the door knobs.

  • Patent number: 5335949
Abstract: A pneumatic spring is equipped with a shell tube (12) which is telescopically guided on a pneumatic-spring cylinder (9) and which can snap into different positions. For bolting between the shell tube (12) and the pneumatic-spring cylinder (9), a bolt body (16) is attached to the cylinder bottom (17). In the bolt body (16), a bolt (18) is spring-loaded by a resilient force directed radially outward. In order to bolt the pneumatic-spring cylinder (9) relative to the shell tube (12), the bolt (18) engages in various breaches (19a and 19). Finger pressure required to release the bolting depends on which one of the two relative-shift directions between the pneumatic-spring cylinder (9) and the shell tube (12) is intended. (FIG.

  • Patent number: 5282658
Abstract: A door stop adapted for a mounting adjacent a lower edge of a door at a location remote from the hinge, such door stop functioning to prevent an intruder from pushing the door open. This door stop comprises a mounting device adapted to be secured in a fixed position adjacent the lower edge of the door, and an elongate, rigid member operatively associated with the mounting device. One end of the elongate, rigid member has an aperture, enabling it to be pivotally mounted to the mounting device, and the other end of the elongate, rigid member has a component adapted to move, at the behest of the user, into contact with the floor. The elongate member is selectively movable between a raised, substantially vertical storage position residing close to the door, and an active, downwardly angled position in which the other end is in firm contact with the floor. I advantageously utilize a spring bias arrangement serving to hold the other end of the elongate member in such position of firm contact with the floor.

The lock includes a casing adapted to be mounted within a recess formed in the upper sash frames, and a faceplate on the casing having an opening therein communicating with an interior casing cavity. A tumbler pivots in the cavity and is spring biased by a leaf spring to normally project through the opening to engage the lower sash in a locking position. The leaf spring is mounted completely within the casing cavity normally to bias the tumbler into its extended, locking position, but permitting the tumbler to be completely retracted within the casing cavity so that the lower sash frame can be raised and moved past the tumbler. The tumbler and casing wall include interlocking protrusions to prevent over-rotation of the tumbler during engagement with the lower sash frame. The lock can be supplied as an assembled unit for installation.
