Rotary Power Source Patents (Class 30/97)
  • Patent number: 5407382
Abstract: A method for severing tubular material around a rigid mandrel. The method comprises piercing the film with a knife such that the edge of the knife faces away from the mandrel, rotating the knife about the mandrel in a direction toward the knife edge while cutting the tubular material from inside of the tubular material to the outside of the tubular material and continuing said rotating until the tubular material is completely severed. In a preferred embodiment the tubular material is held stationary from at least the time of said piercing until at least the time that the tubular material is completely severed. In a further preferred embodiment, the tubular material such as a food casing is inflated to provide a space between the tubular material and the mandrel. The invention further includes an apparatus for practicing the method of the invention.

  • Patent number: 5394776
Abstract: A portable cutting tool has an annular frame for surrounding the pipe. A rotatable ring on the frame carries a radially fed cutter which includes a bit subassembly for cutting the tubular member. The bit subassembly is indexed in response to orbital movement of the cutter. The bit subassembly includes a bit planar support block which has a dimension (as measured parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tubular member being cut) which is less than that of the bit which it carries. In such a manner, a channel passageway may be formed between the bit support block and the tubular member being cut as the bit penetrates into the tubular member during the cutting operation such that lubricating/flushing fluid may be directed to the bit.

  • Patent number: 5351587
Abstract: A cutting tool is disclosed which includes a substantially cylindrical body of a diameter sufficient for receiving a plumbing nipple through a first end of the body. A clamping element is provided adjacent to the first end of the cylindrical body for clamping the body to the plumbing nipple. The claimed cutting tool further includes at least one cutter, and preferably two cutters, located within the cylindrical body and mounted on a shaft which extends beyond a second end of the cylindrical body; the second end being opposite the first end. The cutting tool is adapted for rotation by the shaft which, in turn, can be attached to a power drill, or the like, so that the nipple can be cut from its outwardly directed end inwardly. The cutting tool does not itself rotate but, instead, contains a cutting head attached to a shaft which can be rotated by various rotation devices, such as an electric power drill.

  • Patent number: 3942248
Abstract: A pipe cutting device comprises a split frame which may be clamped around the circumference of a pipe (either inside or outside of the pipe). Floatingly or freely mounted on the rollers carried by the frame, to rotate about the pipe, is a ring gear having at least one arcuate arm mounted thereon to rotate with the gear as it turns around the pipe. At one end, the arm is pivotally mounted on the ring gear. At the other end, the arm is selectively biased toward the pipe by a compression spring or other suitable force. This way, a blade mounted on the arm may be driven into the pipe by a controlled amount. A gear train selectively raises or lowers the blade with respect to the surface of the pipe depending upon the position of a clutch arrangement. A special feature of the cutter is that it is easily adapted to cut from either the outside or the inside surface of a pipe.

  • Patent number: 3933519
Abstract: Apparatus and method for cleaning the exterior surface of a pipe such as a pipe located in a sub-sea location having a coating of concrete or the like thereabout. The apparatus includes a generally longitudinal frame which supports a carriage for longitudinal traverse therealong. The carriage supports a high-pressure fluid nozzle which is arranged to direct the discharge thereof against the pipe coating which is to be removed. The carriage is arranged for longitudinal traverse along the frame, to thereby direct a high-pressure fluid stream into contact with the surface of the pipe. The frame is also arranged for rotation about the pipe, whereby a section of the pipe can be cleaned about its full circumference by a number of generally longitudinal runs along the pipe section being cleaned. The carriage may also support a wire cutter for cutting any re-enforcing wire after the concrete has been dislodged by the fluid nozzle.
