  • Patent number: 5796197
Abstract: An oil-filled, submersible electric motor which contains features designed to prevent both the ingress of well fluid into the motor interior, and the leakage of fluid from the motor interior. The motor contains a liquid-filled top chamber, above the motor's stator and rotor. This top chamber connects, via a tube, with a pressure-relief chamber at the bottom of the motor so that any liquid which migrates into the top of the motor is channeled away from the stator and rotor. The relief chamber also serves as a reservoir to replace any liquid which seeps out of the top chamber. The motor also incorporates a pressure-equalization chamber, beneath the stator and rotor, to accommodate thermal expansion of the dielectric fluid in the motor interior. A bladder in the equalization chamber expands and contracts to keep the motor interior and the well fluid in pressure equilibrium.

The power supplying unit has a ceramic sleeve fixed to the flange, a penetrating conductor inserted into this ceramic sleeve, and the ceramic sleeve and the penetrating conductor are coupled air-tightly to each other inside the flange (inside the tank) sealed outside the flange with a bellows of semi-mountain construction in cross section. The bellows has an elasticity and is mounted, when the ceramic sleeve and the penetrating conductor are linearly expanded at the maximum temperature during practical or normal use, or at the temperature slightly higher than the said level. The bellows is mounted between the ceramic sleeve and the penetrating conductor in a state where it is displaced to its maximum length due to its self elasticity.

Abstract: A stepper motor of the permanent-magnet sheet-metal type is constructed of a number of modules, simplifying assembly. The modular parts include a stator having integrally-molded winding bobbins and pole pieces. A rotor mounted in the stator includes a barrier member which separates a plastic, threaded hub molded interiorly from a permanent magnet molded exteriorly. A shaft having a first threaded end rotatably engaged with the interior of the rotor hub has a rectangular central portion extending through a rectangular opening of the stator to convert rotary motion of the rotor to linear motion of the shaft. An opposite end of the shaft includes a molded head and a tubular shield extending from the head. This shield and a tubular portion of the stator molding define a labyrinthal passage which inhibits the passage of contaminants into the rotor. A housing of the motor and a rotatably attached flange include engagable portions to lock the flange at a desired angular position.

  • Patent number: 5307702
Abstract: An electric engine starter that has a motor frame and a planetary gear mechanism is provided with an internal shield that is operative to prevent brush dust from entering the planetary gear mechanism. The shield is formed of steel and has an outer annular flange that, prior to assembly to the starter, is located at an angle to a plane that is normal to the longitudinal axis of the shield. When the shield is assembled to the starter, it is compressed between the motor frame and a support for the ring gear of the planetary gear mechanism. During this compression, the flange is deflected to develop a spring force. This spring force causes a gasket interposed between the flange and the motor frame to tightly seal against the motor frame. This spring force further causes the shield to tightly engage the ring gear support.

  • Patent number: 5296772
Abstract: A ventilated brush holder for an alternating current generator. The brush holder has a tubular shield portion, a brush holding portion and a bearing retainer portion. The shield portion encloses the slip rings of the rotor of the generator. The brush holding portion has bores that are open to the interior of the shield portion. Brushes are located in the bores that project into the shield portion and engage the slip rings. The bearing retaining portion is disposed between and engages an internal surface of an opening in the frame of the generator and an outer surface of the outer race of a ball bearing for the rotor shaft. The bearing retainer portion has a plurality of circumferentially spaced and axially extending slots that form air passages. A fan is driven by the rotor shaft and when it is rotated, air is caused to flow through the shield portion and then through the slots in the bearing retainer portion. This flow of air cools the brushes and the bearing and carries away brush dust.

Abstract: A sealed electric motor assembly suitable for use in a hostile environment, such as high temperatures, high pressures or in atmospheres containing toxic or corrosive gases. The motor assembly is especially adapted for use with a blower assembly. The stator windings are protected from the hostile environment by hermetically sealing them between the cylindrical housing for the motor and a thin metal canister secured tightly against the inner wall of the housing. Also disclosed are arrangements for removing heat from the motor during its operation. Service life of the electric motor of this invention is greatly increased as compared to conventional motors when operated in a hostile environment.

Abstract: A moisture-proof coupling, which is simple in design and easy to assemble, is disposed between a motor housing and a bearing plate, with the electrical leads running out through the moisture-proof coupling. The electrical leads are integrally molded in an insulated lead-insert, which can be inserted into an opening on the end face of the bearing plate. A circumferential sealing ring is molded on the insulated lead-insert. The sealing ring is injection-molded together with the lead-insert on a brush plate so that it can be pre-positioned and, when the motor is assembled, can be pressed between the motor housing and the bearing plate to form a seal. The brush plate can be fixed together with the lead-insert and the sealing ring in the bearing plate in the manner of a pre-assembled component.
