  • Patent number: 8188949
Abstract: Display driver circuits are described for driving organic light emitting diode displays, particularly passive matrix displays with greater efficiency. Display driver control circuitry (506) comprises a frame memory interface (505) for reading data from a frame memory (504) for presentation on a passive matrix OLED display. A blank line identifier (507) identifies one or more substantially blank rows of pixels defined by the data in the frame memory and the control circuitry (506) skips past these rows when the passive matrix display is addressed. When blank lines are skipped the apparent brightness of the remaining lines increases and thus preferably the control circuitry includes a power controller (505) for reducing a power supply to the display in proportion to the number of skipped lines. The invention is particularly suited to a display driver providing a controlled current drive.

Abstract: An organic light emitting display is capable of reducing variation in power transmitted to pixels to reduce or prevent non-uniformity of brightness from being generated. The organic light emitting display includes a pixel including a red sub pixel, a green sub pixel, and a blue sub pixel and first pixel power source lines for supplying a first pixel power from a first pixel power source to the red sub pixel, the green sub pixel, and the blue sub pixel, wherein the first pixel power source lines coupled to at least two different color sub pixels of the red, green and blue sub pixels have different widths. The first pixel power source lines have widths that may correspond to a voltage drop of the first pixel power source or may correspond to deterioration of the respective sub pixels to which they are coupled.

Abstract: Disclosed is a display of a particular size that may be perceived as larger than the particular size as a result of light emitted by one or more light guides adjacent the perimeter of the display. The display may also be perceived as brighter. In particular, the display is configured to output a changing image. A light guide is disposed adjacent at least a portion of the perimeter of the display and coupled to a multicolor LED. A controller of the electronic device is configured to analyze the changing image to determine the color content. The multicolor LED is driven to emit light according to the color content of the changing image. The light guide is configured to couple light from the LED in a direction parallel to the display viewing surface, and to couple light out of the light guide in a direction away from the display viewing surface.

  • Patent number: 8044895
Abstract: A problem in that a light emitting element slightly emits light is solved by an off current of a thin film transistor connected in series to the light emitting element, thereby a display device which can perform a clear display by increasing contrast, and a driving method thereof are provided. When the thin film transistor connected in series to the light emitting element is turned off, a charge held in the capacitance of the light emitting element itself is discharged. Even when an off current is generated at the thin film transistor connected in series to the light emitting element, this off current charges this capacitance until the capacitance of the light emitting element itself holds a predetermined voltage again. Accordingly, the off current of the thin film transistor does not contribute to light emission. In this manner, a slight light emission of the light emitting element can be reduced.

Abstract: A method for driving an organic light emitting display (OLED) panel having a plurality of organic light emitting diodes is provided. The organic light emitting diodes are coupled to a plurality of segment lines and a plurality of common lines in a matrix structure. The organic light emitting diodes coupled to the same common lines are divided into a plurality of groups according to colors of the OLED panel. Driving currents are provided to the organic light emitting diodes of the groups according to a plurality of pulse width modulation (PWM) manners. The PWM manners generate waveforms having pulse width corresponding to grayscale in a period, wherein each PWM manner corresponds to different colors of the OLED panel.

  • Patent number: 8026879
Abstract: A display that includes energy sensors within the display itself is disclosed. An Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) can be made to operate both as a light emitter and as an energy detector. When forward biased with an appropriate driving signal, the OLED emits light via electroluminescence, which can be used to make a portion of an image on the display. In another mode, the OLED can detect energy by converting incoming photons or energy into an electrical signal by the photoelectric effect. By operating OLEDs in the display in both emissive and sensing modes, energy that shines on the display, such as from an outside source can be detected at the same time an image is shown. Additionally, a display including OLEDs can detect light energy generated by the display itself.
