The EH gratings are activated and tuned by electrode pairs that are controlled through a voltage controller. The tunable optical filter is coarse tuned by activating the EH gratings having a wavelength range that includes the center wavelength that is to be filtered and fine tuned by adjusting the voltage that is applied across the activated EH gratings.

A rotation axis around which the mirror is rotated and a translation path for the rotation axis are provided, to change the curvature of the mirror where the output light is reflected. In other embodiments, a plurality of mirrors have different surface curvatures. A holder has a rotation axis and holds the plurality of mirrors equidistantly from the rotation axis. The holder is rotatable around the rotation axis to bring a different, respective mirror in position to reflect light produced by a VIPA generator back to the VIPA generator. In other embodiments, a rotating mirror is rotatable about a rotation axis to reflect light produced by a VIPA generator to a respective fixed mirror.

Further, the mirrors are made from alternating layers of Ga1-xAlxAs, where x>0.96, and a material selected from the group consisting of either Ga1-zAlzAs, where 0.7>Z>0, or Ga1-yAlyAs/Ga1-zAlzAs/Ga1-yAlyAs where 0.7>Z>0 and y>0.5. The Ga1-xAlxAs is wet oxidized by exposing its edge to water in a nitrogen or helium atmosphere at a temperature of between about 360° C. and 450° C. so as to transform it to AlOx. The resulting AlOx layers abut the sacrificial layer and act as etch stops during the formation of a cantilever Fabry-Perot structure by etching of the sacrificial layer.

    Abstract: Thin film filters have been a basic building block of many wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems providing the means by which a signal, defined by a center wavelength, can be separated from a group of WDM signals. In an effort to maintain the same performance over a range of operating temperatures, thin film filters have been coated onto specially designed substrates, which expand and contract with the change in temperature to counteract the effects that the temperature change has on the thin film filters. Unfortunately, only very few materials provide the necessary thermal expansion characteristics to counteract the shift in center wavelength. Moreover, the application of a force onto only one side of the filter causes the thin film filter to bend or curve. Accordingly, the present invention solves the aforementioned problems by providing a thin film filter sandwiched between a substrate and a superstrate, which apply equal forces to each side of the filter.

    Abstract: Optical elements comprise stacked, optically matched and optically coupled etalons, at least one of the optically coupled etalons comprising first and second selectively transparent thin film mirror coatings on opposite surfaces of a bulk optic. The bulk optic defines the cavity spacing of the etalon and may, for example be formed of a monolithic body of silica or other optically transparent glass diced from a glass wafer. The bulk optic may further comprise a wedge coating of progressively increasing thickness overlying the monolithic glass body and compensating for, or offsetting non-parallelism of the bulk optic. The bulk optic may further comprise a thickness-adjustment layer of substantially uniform thickness. The disclosed optical elements optionally comprise other devices optically coupled to the stacked etalons. Novel methods are disclosed for producing the stacked etalons.

    Abstract: One problem that arises in the context of controlling tunable filters, and more specifically, Fabry-Perot tunable filters concerns the control algorithms for these MOEMS devices. An optical filter system comprises a tunable optical filter that scans a pass band across a signal band to generate a filtered signal. A filter tuning voltage generator generates a tuning voltage to the optical tunable filter. A photodetector generates an electrical signal in response to the filtered signal. Finally, a controller, that is responsive to the photodetector, triggers the filter tuning voltage generator. To increase the ease at which the results of a scan of the signal band of a WDM signal can be analyzed and improve spectral resolution, the change in the pass band of the tunable filter as a function of time is linearized in frequency or wavelength. This is achieved through the use of essentially an arbitrary waveform generator as the filter tuning voltage generator.

    Abstract: Mechanical control and actuation of an adaptive optical element provides highly stable and repeatable correction of the shape of an optical element to an accuracy of a small fraction of a very short wavelength of light, responsive to a metrology source and sensor arrangement. Actuators in the form of individual set-screws or other actuators capable of axially positioning a shaft are driven by a robotic screw driver with four degrees of freedom or one or more linear actuators to exert force on the mirror. Positive or negative force may be used for outward and/or inward deflection of the mirror. When a desired force is developed on the mirror through a mechanical linkage, the linkage may be clamped by a passive clamp which may be released by an actuator such that the adjustment is maintained while the linear actuator and the clamp actuator are turned off; yielding a highly stable adjustment while effectively removing sources of actuator drift, noise, vibration and heating which may adversely affect stability.

In more detail, the mirror structures comprise a substrate; a first mirror is deposited on the substrate, with an index matching coating between the substrate and the first mirror. The second mirror is stacked on the first mirror. The mirrors are symmetric relative to each other, such that the index of a first mirror in the second spectral band has an effective index of about one.     Abstract: An optical apparatus for producing chromatic dispersion. The apparatus includes a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) generator, a mirror and a lens. The VIPA generator receives an input light at a respective wavelength and produces a corresponding collimated output light traveling from the VIPA generator in a direction determined by the wavelength of the input light, the output light thereby being spatially distinguishable from an output light produced for an input light at a different wavelength. The mirror has a cone shape, or a modified cone shape. The lens focuses the output light traveling from the VIPA generator onto the mirror so that the mirror reflects the output light. The reflected light is directed by the lens back to the VIPA generator. In this manner, the apparatus provides chromatic dispersion to the input light.

    Abstract: A process for fabricating an optical membrane device comprises providing a handle wafer and then oxidizing a surface of the handle wafer to form an insulating layer. A device wafer is then bonded to the handle wafer. An optical membrane structure is formed in this device wafer. The insulating layer is selectively removed to release the membrane structure. This device wafer can be manufactured from silicon wafer material. Such material typically has a low number of dislocations yielding a stable mechanical membrane structure. The insulating layer defines the electrical cavity across which electrical fields are established that are used to electrostatically deflect the membrane structure. The insulating layer is between 3 and 6 micrometers (&mgr;m) in thickness.
