Abstract: A read head structure is disclosed with a dual piece heat sink layer having a front piece formed over a front portion of a dynamic flying height (DFH) element and a back piece above a back portion of the DFH element. A first (S1) shield is formed on the front piece and between the front piece and air bearing surface (ABS). Front and back pieces are separated by an insulator gap. The front piece is used to help control read gap protrusion. As a result, a bottom portion of the S1 shield protrudes to a greater extent than a top portion adjacent to the sensor thereby protecting the sensor from unwanted contact with the magnetic media. The dual piece heat sink layer also enables an improved Figure of Merit in terms of temperature rise in the reader per unit of actuation (nm) delivered by the DFH element.

Abstract: Approaches to use of a squeeze air bearing for supporting and/or rotating the disks in a hard-disk drive. The squeeze bearing, whose effect is based on relative normal motion between two surfaces, is arranged adjacent to the rim of the disk to provide a bearing force at the disk rim. The squeeze bearing comprises multiple cantilevered arms with one end fixed to a support ring assembly and the other end having one or more vibrational element which, when vibrating, provides the bearing force. At least one of the vibrational elements is configured at an angle to the disk rim and which, when vibrating, provides a tangential force to rotate the disk for HDD operational purposes. Abstract: A method and apparatus for a head slider air bearing surface (ABS) in hard disk drives that mitigate fly height deviations. The invention mitigates these problems by providing an ABS of the head slider with elongated asymmetrical features that extend substantially parallel to the direction of the airflow caused by the rotating magnetic disk, in one or both of the inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) positions of the head slider with respect to the magnetic disk. The head slider may be produced with a two step etch process, as opposed to a three step etch process. By reducing the number of etching steps, the head slider of the invention can be produced at lower costs and in less time as fewer masks and chamber pump-down steps are required.

Abstract: A hard disk drive includes a base member, a disk which is a data storage medium to rotate at a high speed on the base member, and a head stack assembly (HSA) having a head slider including a magnetic head to write data on the disk or to reproduce data recorded on the disc, and an ABS pattern formed on a disk facing surface of the head slider to generate a lifting force, and is rotatably mounted on the base member so that the head slider moves between inner circumferences and outer circumferences of the disk in a floating state over the disc, wherein if a center line of the ABS pattern is an ABS line and a straight line extending in a direction in which an air flow induced due to the high speed rotation of the disk enters the ABS pattern is an air flow line, a crossing angle between the ABS line and the air flow line is reduced as the head slider moves from the outer circumferences to the inner circumferences.

Abstract: Approaches for a head slider for use within a hard-disk drive. The head slider comprises an air bearing surface (ABS) and an electromagnetic transducer disposed at an air outflow end of the air bearing surface. The air bearing surface comprises a slit feature that is present prior to the electromagnetic transducer in the direction of air flow. The physical dimensions of the slit feature are designed to lower an amount of pressure required for a protrusion of the head slider to detect a surface of a magnetic-recording disk. The air bearing surface may further comprise an optional hollow recess prior to the slit feature in the direction of air flow. The size and the shape of the hollow recess are designed to decrease a change in a fly height of the head slider in response to a change in altitude of the hard-disk drive.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling lubrication in hard disk drives. Hard disk drives often include lubrication on the disks to protect the disks from incidental contact with the head slider. Embodiments of the invention include lubrication control recesses on the air bearing surface (ABS) of the head slider. The recesses reduce air stagnation on the ABS and/or store excess lubrication that migrates from the disk to the head slider. By reducing build-up of lubrication and storing excess lubrication, the lubrication control recesses avoid failure that may occur as a result of the lubrication interfering with the ABS or the read/write elements of the head.
