  • Patent number: 5984516
Abstract: An enclosed kneading apparatus which can smoothly knead and disperse kneaded products of various kneading conditions without the maintenance of a rotor moving mechanism for a first and second rotors and the operation which sacrifices the handling capacity of the kneading apparatus and at the same time, prevent an excessive increase in the temperature of the kneaded products. In the apparatus, the kneaded product of a desired kneading state is obtained by flowing a kneading object in tip clearances between the inner wall of a chamber and a first and second rotors while rotating the first and second rotors in the chamber, and by imparting a shearing force to disperse the kneading object. The respective first and second rotors are provided with three long wings in helical fashion each having a plurality of tip portions for providing a plurality of three tip clearances in the axial direction.

  • Patent number: 5942170
Abstract: A continuous method of and system for fabricating thermoset polymer pellets wherein thermosetting polymeric resin material flows axially in a temperature controlled, mixer-extruder barrel while maintaining the material between a melt temperature and a higher thermosetting reaction temperature, and extrudes from the barrel at an extrusion temperature between the melt and reaction temperatures. The extruded material is formed into generally spheroidal pellets which are cooled in a transporting coolant liquid stream and charged to the interior of an open ended, centrifuge basket having a porous circumferential wall and an interior annular pusher plate. The wall is rotated to demoisterize the pellets by centrifugally removing liquid coolant and while reciprocating the pusher plate and basket relatively to displace the pellets axially along and off the basket wall. Pellets are taken from the basket wall without substantially fracturing them and forming an undue percentage of fines.

  • Patent number: 5814282
Abstract: A polycondensation reactor for polyesters, polyamides or polyarylates, for example, in which a low viscosity material is introduced into the reactor and a relative high viscosity polymer exits the reactor. The reactor has at least two longitudinally intersecting cylindrical interior chambers, each with a rotating shaft through its length. Each shaft has a plurality of stirrers and spacers designed to wipe all interior surfaces of the reactor. The stirrers can be shaped as a cycloid or involute profile, for example. Generally the stirrers on each shaft are indexed from one another preferably by 90.degree. and intermesh with stirrers on the adjacent shaft. Stirring the low viscosity material by rotating the stirrers (on the shafts) spreads the material into a plurality of thin films. At the temperature and vacuum conditions of the reactor, a volatile component is removed, thus causing the material to polymerize, by condensation, forming a relatively high viscosity polymer.

These sets of non-symmetrical modular mixing elements are removably mountable at any suitable axial locations along their respective rotationally-driven screw shafts for optimizing performance in relationship to particular plastic material and particular additives being compounded. The non-symmetrical geometries provide dynamic wedging pressurization for repeatedly propelling relatively large circumferential flows of the plastic material through large shear clearances. Due to the relatively large shear clearances, the plastic material is mixed at less elevated and more uniform temperatures than usually occurs with use of prior symmetrical kneading blocks or kneading discs. At less elevated temperatures most plastic materials exhibit increased viscosities.

Abstract: A method of constructing or reconstituting a shaft and paddle assembly for mixers and processors wherein radially aligned paddles on parallel shafts revolving at the same speed in the same direction of rotation both co-wipe and completely wipe the interior of the barrel of the mixer or processor which has a mixer chamber comprising interconnecting cylindrical bores. The co-wiping paddles are formed with paddle bores of a configuration comprising alternating lobular projections and root recesses, and arcuate corner portions on the lobular projections and root recesses. The arcuate corner portions of the projections are tangential to the arcuate corner portions of the root recesses. The shafts are formed with intermeshing matching projections and root recesses.

  • Patent number: 5429435
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously processing viscous liquids and masses has axially parallel satellite shafts (23) disposed in a ring within a housing (4) and driven in the same direction which bear meshing processing means (24) and are driven by a central shaft (17) bearing central gearwheels (19; 20). Each satellite shaft (23) bears two axially spaced coaxial pairs of pinions (27; 34), one pinion (28; 36) of each pair of pinions engaging a central gearwheel (19; 20) and the other pinion (29; 35) engaging the internal toothing of an annular gear (5; 9) fixed on the housing. The toothings of the pinions (28, 29) of one pair of pinions (27) are formed with a module which results in an integral number of teeth on the central gearwheel (19) or on the internal toothing of the annular gear (5) from satellite shaft (23) to satellite shaft (23). The central shaft (17) is supported on the annular gears (9, 10) only via the central gearwheels (19, 20) and the pinions (28, 29; 35, 36).

  • Patent number: 5417992
Abstract: A continuous process and apparatus for making bread and bread-like products using supercritical fluid extrusion are disclosed. The process is carried out in a dough mixer and extruder into which supercritical CO.sub.2 is injected to provide proofing of the product. Rising of the dough is produced by a combination of hydrodynamic expansion of air bubbles and diffusion of CO.sub.2 into said bubbles as the dough is extruded through an exit die, without the need for yeast. A filler material may be introduced into the core of the extruded product by a coextruder located within the extruder, to provide a continuous process for producing a coextruded filled product consisting of a fully cooked cereal-based outer core filled with a pumpable filling injected into the hollow center of the product. Also, controlled acid hydrolysis of the starches in the dough may be used to produce reducing sugars that add desirable flavor to the final product.

  • Patent number: 5409366
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for processing extrudable materials in such a way as to apply a controlled and predetermined degree of shear force to the materials. Typically, an extruder apparatus includes a housing having first and second screws mounted therein for rotation on a common axis, the arrangement being such that longitudinal thrust forces exerted by the first screw are at least partially compensated by corresponding forces generated by the second screw, inlet means for introducing material to be processed into the housing and a shear generating device located between said screws, said device including a restriction through which material is forced from said housing to exit from said housing. The restriction is preferably an annular gap formed by a sleeve fixed relatively to the housing and a shaft portion which extends into the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5382089
Abstract: Convenient access for quick and thorough clean-out and maintenance of an openable mixing chamber and both rotors in two-rotor continuous mixers for plastic materials is advantageously achieved by making each rotor in three separate pieces: a drive journal, a rotor body (also called a "rotor section" or a "rotor") and a driven journal. These three separate pieces of each rotor are axially aligned, with the rotor body being positioned between the drive journal and the driven journal. Each rotor body is disengageably coupled to its respective drive and driven journals. The drive and driven journals are rotatably mounted in bearing assemblies which are separate from the mixing chamber barrel (also called a "mixing chamber housing").
