  • Patent number: 8311491
Abstract: A system to provide narrowcast communications uses adaptive data rate control to individual subscribers such that the effects of precipitation or other link conditions, which are not common to all subscribers, is mitigated. The invention takes advantage of the fact that the narrowcast data consist of packets which are individually addressed to specific subscribers, or groups of subscribers. The narrowcast data is communicated on a plurality of channels, each of potentially differing data rates. The subscribers are assigned a particular channel, based upon their link quality, to receive packets addressed to them. The lower data rate channel will be less affected by adverse link conditions and are hence assigned to subscribers most likely to incur adverse link conditions.

  • Patent number: 8306472
Abstract: A repeater having different input and output frequencies converts a signal received with the input frequency to a first intermediate frequency signal based on a local oscillating frequency for intermediate frequency conversion, and converts the first intermediate frequency signal to a second intermediate frequency signal by performing digital processing on the first intermediate frequency signal. Then, the repeater generates a first frequency tone signal that corresponds to a difference between the input and output frequencies, and generates a second frequency tone signal from the local oscillating frequency for intermediate frequency conversion and the first frequency tone signal. The repeater up-converts the second intermediate frequency signal to the output frequency based on the second frequency tone signal, and transmits the signal.

  • Patent number: 8279743
Abstract: In an OFDM communications system receiver, channel estimates are processed to remove or reduce noise, exploiting the orthogonality of pilot patterns. The de-noised channel estimates are then used to compute inter-cell interference. The noise effects of orthogonal pilot patterns are selectively removed from channel samples in estimating inter-cell interference, depending on whether data subcarriers are subject to the same interference as pilot subcarriers, and whether data subcarriers are subject to interference from sectors with pilot patterns orthogonal to those in the transmitting sector. A further calculation removes noise from cells not identified by an orthogonal pilot sequence, which may be particularly applicable when large variations exist in the frequency domain of the propagation channel across a pilot pattern.

  • Patent number: 8219128
Abstract: A Coordinated MultiPoint (CoMP) cell controller performs network-centric link adaptation for User Equipment (UE) in the CoMP cell. The CoMP cell controller receives at least infrequent channel estimates from a UE in the CoMP cell, from which it estimates downlink channel and thermal noise at the UE. The CoMP cell controller is aware of the desired signal to be received at the UE, and the intra-CoMP cell interference to the UE caused by transmissions to other UEs in the CoMP cell. The CoMP cell receives from the UE reports of inter-CoMP cell interference caused by transmissions by other CoMP cells. Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and method for downlink beamforming that takes into account imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter when determining the steering vector used in the beamforming process. The steering vector is calculated to increase the ratio of the average power of a desired signal component to the sum of the interference power of other wireless terminals, referred to as the signal-to-leakage ratio. By accounting for imperfect CSI when calculating the steering vector, the bit-error rate for a given signal-to-noise ratio is decreased. Also disclosed is a power allocation method that improves performance of the system by increasing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for all of the wireless terminals currently communicating with the base station. The power allocation similarly decreases the bit-error rate for a given signal-to-noise ratio, especially at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract: A transmitting/receiving method that can easily detect an influence exerted in transmission channels at a transmitter/receiver is provided. An acquiring unit 12 acquires left audio data and right audio data of audio data received by a metadata calculator 1. An adding unit 141 then calculates added data based on an added value for a predetermined time of a sum of the acquired left audio data and right audio data. Similarly, a subtracting unit 142 calculates subtracted data based on an added value for predetermined time of a difference between the acquired right audio data and left audio data. An addition unit 17 adds the added data and the subtracted data calculated by these adding unit 141 and subtracting unit 142 to the received audio data, and a transmission unit 18 transmits the audio data to which the added data and the subtracted data are added.

Abstract: A method to adapt channel quality indicator (CQI) reports from user equipment (UE) is provided. This involves first determining the presence of a high-speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH) signal. An estimated signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also determined. Next an SNR correction based on the presence or lack thereof of the HS-SCCH signal and the CRC checks for HS-SCCH and HS-DSCH signals are determined and applied to the estimated SNR. The CQI report is then generated based on the corrected estimated SNR. This CQI report which takes into account a corrected estimated SNR may then be used to adjust the HS-SCCH signal in an HSDPA telephony system.

  • Patent number: 7929482
Abstract: A method an apparatus for selecting a forward link and return link data rate for a constant power, variable data rate two-way, mobile satellite communications link. The forward link and return link signal strength (in the form of carrier power to noise power spectral density ratio) is measured, cataloged, and the values are used for the data rate selection. In addition, a ping can be sent by the network operation center to the mobile unit and the response to the ping is used for updating the information of both forward link and return link signal strength, so the chance of wrong data rate selection can be reduced. Multiple re-transmission attempts combined with gradually increased re-transmission margin ensures the proper data rate decision can be eventually achieved even with occasionally inaccurate signal strength information.

Abstract: A wireless code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system, including a base station (BS) and a subscriber unit (SU), uses adaptive forward power control (AFPC) and adaptive reverse power control (ARPC) to control the transmit power of forward and reverse link radio frequency (RF) channel signals, respectively. Automatic gain control (AGC) signals are produced to maintain the level of forward and reverse CDMA signals at a near constant level. The CDMA signals are despread to produce first and second despread signals. The first and second despread signals are used to produce a first error signal e1. A second error signal e2 is produced based on the AGC signals. Combined error signals are formed based on the first error signal e1 and the second error signal e2. The combined error signals are hard limited to form adaptive power control (APC) bits used to control the level of the forward and reverse link RF channel signals.

Abstract: The present invention concerns methods for efficiently supporting Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the Forward Packet Data Channel (F-PDCH) in CDMA 2000 1xEV-DV systems. Active speech in VoIP is encoded using, for example enhanced variable rate codec (EVRC), which produces 171, 80 and 16 bits per 20 ms of speech for Rate 1, Rate ½ and Rate ?, respectively. However, about 60% of the time a user is inactive during a speech session, so an inordinate amount of system bandwidth is comprised of rate ? VoIP packets. In one embodiment of the present invention the apparatus of the present invention identifies the Rate ? voice frame packets and discards them. In another embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus of the present invention identifies the Rate ? voice frame packets and selects some of them for further transmission. In both embodiments the efficiency of channel utilization is increased since the amount of channel band width used to communicate relatively little information, e.g.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for mitigating interference by low-cost Internet-base-station (LCIB) pilot beacons with macro-network communications. In an embodiment, an LCIB transmits a pilot beacon having a power level that is adjustable on a per-carrier basis. The LCIB determines that it does not have any registered mobile stations, and responsively turns the power level down or off while monitoring reverse-noise rise (RNR) on one or more carriers. The LCIB then detects a threshold RNR on a carrier, and responsively carries out a sub-process a first number of times on the carrier. The sub-process comprises (a) gradually increasing the power level while continuing to monitor RNR, (b) detecting a sudden RNR decrease, and responsively turning the power level down or off while continuing to monitor RNR, and then (c) detecting an RNR increase. The LCIB waits for the RNR to return to normal before increasing the power.
