Abstract: A downstream adaptive modulation system and method. The downstream adaptive modulation system comprises a wireless access termination system and one or more wireless modems. The wireless access termination system includes a plurality of queues and a parser. The parser parses data traffic onto the plurality of queues. Each queue is associated with a different coding and modulation scheme. Each of the one or more wireless modems receives data traffic from the plurality of queues based on the wireless modem's ability to demodulate and decode the signal from each of the plurality of queues. When a wireless modem experiences a change in signal strength, the present invention enables the wireless modem to adapt to data from other queues to compensate for the change in signal strength. • Patent number: 7773625
Abstract: An access method for periodic contention-free sessions (PCFS) reduces interference between overlapping first and second wireless LAN cells contending for the same medium. Each cell includes a respective plurality of member stations and an access point (AP) station. The access method for periodic contention-free sessions (PCFS) includes a fixed cycle time that reduces conflicts with PCFS from other cells. The PCFS from several cells are repeated in cycles of cycle period (CP), which is the contention-free period (CFP) of an access point times a factor that is a function of the number of overlapping cells. Periodic contention-free sessions (PCFSs) are generated, one from each overlapping cell. PCFS transmission attempts occur at the fixed specified time spacing following the start of the previous cycle. Each active AP sets a timer at CP and a PCFS is initiated when the timer expires. The timer is then reset and starts a new cycle.

Abstract: In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a degree of hierarchical modulation can be varied as a function of satellite position, which can be related to time of day, and where such hierarchical modulation can be a combination of phase and amplitude shifts. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, as each satellite in a multiple satellite system broadcasting to North America moves towards a D-node or an A-node position, the offset angle of a phase-based hierarchical modulation scheme can be varied. Thus, in exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the lowest satellite position in the sky can have the lowest offset angle for overlay bits, which offset angle can, for example, progressively increase as the position of the satellite in the sky increases. At a satellite's highest point in the sky, the overlay offset angle can, for example, thus be at its maximum.

Abstract: Special DC tone treatment in a wireless communications system, e.g., an OFDM system, is discussed. In the downlink, a wireless terminal receiver introduces self-interference at the DC tone from the RF/baseband conversion. A base station every so often does not transmit on the downlink DC tone while continuing to transmit on other downlink tones. Wireless terminals measure received signal on the downlink DC tone during the time of suspended DC tone transmission, estimate self-interference and apply a correction to other received downlink DC tones. In the uplink DC tone interference is a composite of the assigned wireless terminal transmitter's baseband/RF conversion self-interference and air link noise. During one symbol interval of an N symbol interval dwell, the uplink DC tone is reserved for a special modulation symbol, which is a predetermined function of the other N?1 modulation symbols.

  • Patent number: 7302232
Abstract: An adaptive antenna control method is used for a radio communication system built by a plurality of radio base stations and a plurality of terminal stations capable of communicating with the radio base stations. Each radio base station includes an adaptive antenna having a plurality of antenna elements, a distributor for generating signals to be input to the plurality of antenna elements by branching a signal of one system to be transmitted, and weighting circuits for respectively weighting transmission signals to the plurality of antenna elements. For reception by each terminal station, an interference wave power given by the transmission signal from each of the plurality of radio base stations is estimated. A weight in the adaptive antenna of each radio base station is determined to minimize a sum of square errors between reception signals and desired signals for all the radio base stations which simultaneously use the same communication channel.

  • Patent number: 7298715
Abstract: The present invention provides a technique to reduce the number of RF components by using digital signal processing functions in wireless receivers having two or more antennas, which results in the reduction of system cost. The reduction occurs by using a multiplexer or switch to sample the signal received by each of the antennas. The sampling rate of the multiplexer or switch is greater than the Nyquist required sampling rate (Fs) of the received signal bandwidth. The sampled signal is a multiplexed single analog (RF) signal, which only requires one chain of receiver components. A signal processor then is able to demultiplex the received signal at a lower frequency and can perform several functions including antenna diversity and beam forming utilizing digital signals at IF or baseband frequencies.

  • Patent number: 7250541
Abstract: This invention is used in communications, for example, in expanded signal spectrum broadband communication systems. The technical effect of this invention consists in an enhanced narrow-band interference suppression factor and almost complete elimination of the effect displayed by a powerful narrow-band interference or a group of narrow-band interferences in a limited frequency band. A noise signal formed in the frequency band (F0, F1) in the transmission channel of a broadband communication system is power-modulated by a given modulation technique at a modulation frequency Fmod<<(F1?F0) and passed through a propagation medium, in which a narrow-band interference is superimposed thereon; received in the receiver; filtered in the frequency band (F0, F1); amplified, and divided into two signals. One of the signals is obtained by amplifying the filtered signal and limiting the amplitude thereof, and the other signal is the filtered signal or a signal linearly amplified without altering the shape thereof.

Abstract: New version packet data devices support a backwards-compatible signal format. New version devices operate within a first frequency band while old version devices operate within a second frequency band. The first frequency band differs from but overlaps with the second frequency band. The new version devices may operate on a first carrier frequency (within the first frequency band) while old version devices may operate at a second carrier frequency (within the second frequency band). The new version devices and/or the old version devices may also support carrier-less modulations. Preamble, header, and trailer portions of a new version signal include a plurality of spectral copies of a baseband modulated signal. One or more of these spectral copies of the baseband modulated signal is/are indistinguishable from corresponding components of an old version signal. The payload of the new version signal may be formed in the same manner or may be formed in have a wider bandwidth, higher data rate format.

  • Patent number: 7197276
Thus, if the signal strength improves over a period of time, the wireless modem may receive data at a higher order modulation and FEC code rate.

  • Patent number: 7180905
The timer is then reset to CP and this starts a new cycle.
