Abstract: In described embodiments, filter parameters for a filter applied to a signal in, for example, a Serializer/De-serializer (SerDes) receiver and/or transmitter are generated based on real-time monitoring of a data eye. The real-time eye monitor monitors data eye characteristics of the signal present in a data path, the data path applying the filter to the signal. The eye monitor generates eye statistics from the monitored data eye characteristics and an adaptive controller generates a set of parameters for the filter of the data path for statistical calibration of the data eye, wherein the eye monitor continuously monitors the data eye and the adaptive controller continuously generates the set of parameters based on the eye statistics.

The methods and apparatus of the present invention are particularly applicable in situations where communication occurs over a channel experiencing multipath interference associated with paths having significantly different lengths. The impulse response-delay profile of such a channel is typically sparse, that is, dominated by a relatively few and widely spaced taps or clusters of closely spaced taps. In one aspect, equalization filter coefficients are calculated based on a channel estimate derived from a single cluster of closely-spaced channel taps collectively having the greatest percentage of energy as indicated by the impulse response-delay profile.

Abstract: A wireless device receives an input signal representing a signal of interest (e.g., one or more portions of a packet) on a wireless medium. The input signal may, in addition, contain narrowband interference signals. The wireless device removes the signal of interest from the input signal to produce a residue signal, and analyzes the residue signal to determine the presence of any interference bands in which narrowband interference signals may be present. The wireless device then removes the detected interference bands from the input signal. The residue signal may reveal the presence of interference signals, which might otherwise be hard to distinguish in the input signal. Thus, interference signals with power levels much lower than the power of the signal of interest may be detected and removed.

Abstract: Frequency compensated communications reception includes compensating for frequency offset in a received signal by constructing a reference signal for comparison with a training sequence in a received signal. The reference signal is formed from basis functions and the training sequence. It is obtained by minimising a cost function J constructed from an adaptively weighted combination of basis functions, the training sequence, the received signal and a constraint requiring non-zero signal power. Multi-element antenna signals are weighted with a beamforming weight vector w in J given by formula (I), where X is a matrix of received signal samples, C is a diagonal matrix containing elements of the training sequence, F is a matrix having columns defining basis functions, v is a vector of adaptive weights, index H indicates complex conjugate transpose and ? is a Lagrange multiplier constraining beamformer power.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for determining the threshold position of one or more latches employed for decision-feedback equalization. A threshold position of a latch employed by a decision-feedback equalizer is determined by constraining input data such that the input data only contains transitions from a first binary value; obtaining a plurality of samples of a single-sided data eye associated with the constrained input data; and determining a threshold position of the latch based on the samples. The constrained input data can comprise (i) transitions from a binary value of 1 to a binary value of 0 or 1; or (ii) transitions from a binary value of 0 to a binary value of 0 or 1. The size of the single-sided data eye can be obtained by analyzing a histogram associated with the single-sided data eye to identify a region having a constant hit count.

Abstract: A second-order Volterra filter has a quadratic section including a plurality of multiplication units that multiply a first input signal with a second input signal. One of the multiplication units employs a signal not delayed from the first input signal, as the second input signal. A remaining one of the multiplication units employs a signal delayed a preset time from the first input signal, as the second input signal. The one of the multiplication units includes a multiplier that multiplies the signal output from the one of the multiplication units and a signal output from each of one or more delay units, each with a preset coefficient. A step gain parameter for updating each preset coefficient of a multiplier of the remaining one of the multiplication units is twice a step gain parameter for updating each preset coefficient of the multiplier of the one of the multiplication units.

Estimation enabling to form the properties of radio transmission channels described by spatial correlations is formed. The prefilter is dimensioned according to the correlations, thereby minimizing the error value of an algorithm used for estimation the channel on a reception side.

Abstract: Methods, apparatus, systems and computer program products address one-sided vectoring systems that include a bonded-line set having two or more bonded DSL lines within a vectored group wherein other techniques such as precoding, tonal predictive GDFEs, tonal rotors and ordering techniques can be implemented. The performance of lines within a bonded set for a single customer can be improved for both upstream and downstream by nesting a vector coding system within, for example, GDFE and/or precoder architectures. The DSL lines within such a bonded group can have rotors applied at both transmit and receive side to achieve higher performance for these lines. The triangular matrix used by the GDFE and the precoder systems of the above-referenced applications can be modified in this context.

Abstract: A data communication transceiver, such as a PCM or xDSL modem, is operable in a training-while-working mode in which it both trains and communicates user data. In some embodiments, upon initiation of a data communication session, the transceiver operates in a startup training mode in which partial training occurs that is sufficient to enable low rate data communication; the transceiver then enters the training-while-working mode in which it communicates user data and completes training. When training is completed, the transceiver enters a data mode in which it communicates user data but does not train. In some embodiments, if in the data mode conditions arise requiring retraining or making retraining desirable, the transceiver enters the training-while-working mode and retrains while continuing to communicate user data.

Abstract: A training sequence is created for space-time diversity arrangement, having any training sequence length, while limiting the training sequence to a standard constellation. Given a number of channel unknowns that need to be estimated, L, a training sequence can be creates that yields minimum means squared estimation error for lengths Nt=kNPRUS+L?1, for any positive integer k?1, where NPRUS a selected perfect roots-of-unity sequence (PRUS) of length N. The training sequence is created by concatenating k of the length N perfect roots-of-unity sequences, followed by L?1 initial symbols of that same PRUS. Good training sequences can be created for lengths Nt that cannot be obtained through the above method by concatenating a requisite number of symbols found through an exhaustive search.
