Abstract: This invention provides an instantaneous method for a user or traveler to obtain a meaning of a symbol that is unfamiliar to said user. The symbol is captured in a format that is easily transmitted to a remote database server. Together with the symbol, the GPS coordinates of the location of the symbol must be sent to the server. The server performs an image matching search, and then uses the location information (GPS) to resolve multiple matches and to determine the meaning of the symbol and instantaneously transmits in the language of their choice the meaning to the user requesting the search.

Abstract: Systems and methods for improving visual object recognition by analyzing query images are disclosed. In one example, a visual object recognition module may determine query images matching objects of a training corpus utilized by the module. Matched query images may be added to the training corpus as training images of a matched object to expand the recognition of the object by the module. In another example, relevant candidate image corpora from a pool of image data may be automatically selected by matching the candidate image corpora against user query images. Selected image corpora may be added to a training corpus to improve recognition coverage. In yet another example, objects unknown to a visual object recognition module may be discovered by clustering query images. Clusters of similar query images may be annotated and added into a training corpus to improve recognition coverage.

The calculating unit calculates a degree of similarity between information of a specific subject contained in the image acquired by the acquiring unit and identification information of the specific subject registered in a registering unit. The memory controlling unit controls a memory unit to store the calculated degree of similarity such that the degree of similarity is associated with date/time information. The first judging unit judges whether the calculated degree of similarity is relatively low compared with predetermined number of other degrees of similarity based on a chronological change of the degrees of similarity. The notification unit notifies that the identification information registered in the registering unit is to be renewed when judged, by the first judging unit, that the calculated degree of similarity is relatively low.

Abstract: A technique for authenticating a user is described. During this authentication technique, an electronic device (such as a cellular telephone) captures multiple images of the user while the user moves the electronic device in a pre-defined manner (for example, along a path in 3-dimensional space), and determines positions of the electronic device when the multiple images were captured. Then, the electronic device compares the images at the positions with corresponding pre-existing images of the user captured at different points of view. If the comparisons achieve a match condition, the electronic device authenticates the user. In this way, the authentication technique may be used to prevent successful replay attacks.

Abstract: A visual quality assessment method and system are based on deriving a quality metric by comparing sub-band approximations of a distorted image and an undistorted version of the same image, providing a good compromise between computational complexity and accuracy. The sub-band approximations are derived from Discrete Wavelet (Haar) transforms of small image blocks of each image. Due to inherent symmetries, the wavelet transform is “blind” to certain types of distortions. But the accuracy of the method is enhanced, and the blindness of the transform is overcome, by computing quality metrics for the distorted image as well as computing quality metrics for a shifted version of the distorted image and combining the results.

Based on the parallel analysis, it is determined whether the potential suspect matches a person in the watch list and a result is outputted based on the determination.

Abstract: A vector graphics classification engine and associated method for classifying vector graphics in a fixed format document is described herein and illustrated in the accompanying figures. The vector graphics classification engine defines a pipeline for categorizing vector graphics parsed from the fixed format document as font, text, paragraph, table, and page effects, such as shading, borders, underlines, and strikethroughs. Vector graphics that are not otherwise classified are designated as basic graphics. By sequencing the detection operations in a selected order, misclassification is minimized or eliminated.

Abstract: An automatic inspection system is provided for monitoring rail track for detecting and generating alerts for certain hazards to the operation of trains that may cause various safety concerns and even derailment. The monitoring is during normal railway service runs without interrupting the normal railway services. In one implementation, an imaging module is used on a passenger or freight train to capture video images of the rail track under the train in motion. In one implementation, the captured video images are automatically processed in a computer using a software module which is based on digital image processing techniques and algorithms to determine whether an irregularity is present on the rail track. In one implementation, video images containing detected irregularities on the rail track are transmitted to a control center for further analysis and possible alert.

  • Patent number: 8934665
Abstract: A method and apparatus for tracking an object, and a method and apparatus for calculating object pose information are provided. The method of tracking the object obtains object feature point candidates by using a difference between pixel values of neighboring frames. A template matching process is performed in a predetermined region having the object feature point candidates as the center. Accordingly, it is possible to reduce a processing time needed for the template matching process. The method of tracking the object is robust in terms of sudden changes in lighting and partial occlusion. In addition, it is possible to track the object in real time. In addition, since the pose of the object, the pattern of the object, and the occlusion of the object are determined, detailed information on action patterns of the object can be obtained in real time.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an operation method for executing games on mobile camera enabled terminal devices and to devices capable of executing the method. The method is based on hiding augmented reality messages in pictures by taking an image of an object, providing symbols; linking the symbols to the image, such that the symbols are not visible when displaying the image, and sending the image and the linked invisible symbols via a wireless connection as a first image to a mobile camera terminal device. The invention also provides a second component to re-visualize the hidden message by receiving the first image, taking a second image with a camera of the mobile camera terminal device, displaying the second image, comparing the first and second images to determine a matching measure, and visibly displaying the linked invisible symbols on the display, if the comparison fulfills at least one predetermined condition.
