The central portion of one of the outer race and inner raceways 11, 14 and the opposing outer peripheral surface of the roller 15 is formed of a first bus with a given radius of curvature. The two end portion sides adjacent to the central portion are formed of a second bus with such a radius of curvature that causes the two end portion sides to part away from the other. The collar surface 19 of the collar portion 16 contacting with an end face of the roller 15 being a convex-shaped spherical surface is formed as a concave-shaped spherical surface.

The centers of contact between the side faces and raceways are offset toward the rib face. The height of the rib face amounts to 30%-45% of the diameter of the large ends of the rollers. The radius of the spherical large end face for a roller exceeds 90% of the roller apex length.

    Abstract: A bearing assembly for securing a wheel to a vehicle includes a spindle having a shaft portion defining a longitudinal bore. A flange, adapted for connection to the wheel, projects radially outward from the shaft portion. A threaded region is positioned at one end of the shaft, and a radial shoulder is positioned between the threaded region and the flange. The bearing assembly also includes a driven axle fixedly mounted within the longitudinal bore of the spindle, and a carrier mounted over the shaft portion of the spindle between the threaded region and the radial shoulder. The carrier is adapted for connection to the vehicle. The bearing assembly further includes a pair of tapered bearings mounted between the shaft portion of the spindle and the carrier, and a compression member threaded on the threaded region of the shaft portion for pre-loading the tapered bearings.

    Abstract: A bearing for enabling an axle shaft to rotate in a housing includes a cup which is attached to the housing, a cone which fits over the axle shaft, and tapered rollers arranged in a single row between tapered raceways on the cup and cone. The arrangement is such that the bearing transmits radial loads and thrust loads in both directions. In one direction the thrust loads are taken on the raceways; in the other through the ribs. The cup contains an oblique bore which opens toward the axis of rotation beyond the small diameter end of the cup raceway, and this bore contains a speed sensor. An excitor ring rotates with the cone immediately inwardly from the speed sensor, and it has disruptions which cause the sensor to produce a pulsating signal, the frequency of which reflects the angular velocity.

To derive the high quality working surfaces, the races and rollers are first ground or otherwise mechanically machined to provide the working surfaces with the proper profiles. Then the races and rollers are immersed in a liquid chemical which reacts with the metal at the surfaces and contemporaneously forms a protective coating which inhibits further reaction. Abrading elements within the chemical come against the races and rollers as they are agitated and continuously remove the coating from higher elevations of the working surfaces, so that the chemical continues to react with the metal at those higher elevations.
