With Integral Chip Breaker, Guide Or Deflector Patents (Class 407/114)
  • Patent number: 9511422
Abstract: A double-sided, indexable, polygonal turning insert includes a plurality of corners, a peripheral clearance surface, and identical upper and under sides. Along the upper side and underside, primary cutting edges, which individually include a nose edge situated in a corner and two main edges, converge toward the same and transform into auxiliary cutting edges, which separate each pair of primary cutting edges along one and the same side. Chip-directing guide surfaces are placed inside the chip surfaces of the cutting edges. The primary cutting edge has a generally positive cutting geometry such that a wedge angle of the cutting edge between the chip surface and the clearance surface is acute in arbitrary sections along the nose edge, as well as along the two main edges. In such a way, the primary cutting edge produces chips that can be guided in a careful, although distinct, way by the guide surfaces.

Abstract: A cutting insert having a plurality of corner cutting edges has an upper face, a lower face, two longitudinal side faces and two transversal side faces connecting the upper face and the lower face. A through hole passes through central parts of the upper face and the lower face. The longitudinal side faces are opposite to each other and normal to both upper and lower faces, as are the transversal side faces. The upper face and the lower face are each provided with two chip discharge grooves, each chip discharge groove extending along a corresponding one of the transversal side faces, the two chip discharge grooves being inclined oppositely in the transverse direction so that the upper face and the lower face are each provided with two corner cutting edges at diagonally opposite corners. The longitudinal length of the insert is longer than the transversal length of the insert. The cutting insert can be mounted stably to a small-diametered cutter with a sufficient mounting surface.

The waveform cutting edges are formed on the insert body respectively at positions which are rotationally symmetrical at predetermined angular intervals around a reference line of the insert bodies. These waveform cutting edges which are positioned rotationally symmetrically to each other are formed such that, when the insert bodies are rotated by the predetermined angle around the reference line, one or more portions of the waveform cutting edges do not match each other and are mutually asymmetrical.
