Abstract: An adjustable boring head that includes a main body member having a longitudinal axis, and a boring bar holder adjustably mounted in the main body member for slidable adjustments transversely across the longitudinal axis. A square cross-sectioned slideway is formed in an end face of the main body member for precise guidance and rigid support of the boring bar holder. The boring bar holder is a unitary one piece structure having a deep socket opening for rigidly mounting the boring bar.
Abstract: A boring apparatus comprises an elongate support body adapted to be rotatable by a machine tool spindle, a cutter mounting body releasably securable to the end of the support body remote from the machine tool spindle and is provided with a cutter guide which slidably receives a cutter therein which is constrained by the guide to be displaceable in an adjustment direction inclined to the rotational axis of the elongate support body. An adjustment member is disposed within the elongate support body and is movable along an axis substantially coaxial with the rotational axis of the elongate support body, and an interengaging coupling on the adjustment member and on the cutting tool is provided whereby movement of the adjustment member along its axis of motion induces movement of the cutting tool in its adjustment direction.
Abstract: A boring head with a longitudinal axis includes a leading cutting portion and a trailing portion. A pair of adjustable work engagement devices are releasably secured to the leading portion by individual fasteners. Individual mechanisms for adjusting the position of each of the work engagement devices in a first direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the boring head, and individual mechanisms for adjusting the position of each of the work engagement devices in a second direction, generally transverse to the first direction, are provided. The first and second direction adjusting mechanisms are positioned coaxially of each other in the boring head. Each work engagement device is adjustable in the first and second directions individually and independently of the other.

Abstract: To center a tool restrained within a collet coupled to a driven portion (9) which, in turn, is coupled to a driving portion (2), and to compensate for possible axial offsets of the respective portions, a coupling element connects the driving and driven portions and two first spring elements (23, 24) are located on the driving portion, two further spring elements (31, 32) are located on the driving portions offset with respect to the first spring elements of 90 degrees. Each one of the spring elements can be adjusted with respect to a centrally located counter support portion (29, 31) by adjustment screws passing through the spring elements and bearing against the counter support, to thereby position the axis of the driven portion (9) carrying the collet, in congruence with the axis of the driving portion (2) even if there are manufacturing tolerances or other offset conditions, such as tolerances in the tool clamped in the collet.
Abstract: A tool holder is disclosed having a body adapted to be rotatably driven about an axis. The body includes an axial bore at one end which is adapted to receive the cylindrical shank of a cutting tool. A radial bore in the body receives a threaded fastener which, upon tightening, abuts against the cutting tool shank to secure the shank to the tool holder body. A pair of alignment members are adjustably secured to the body and each alignment member has an alignment surface which is substantially tangent to the axial bore whereas each alignment member is shaped so that the radial distance between the alignment surface on the alignment member and the axis of the tool holder varies in dependence upon the position of the alignment member. Adjustment of the alignment members and fastener centers the cutting tool to the tool holder.
Abstract: Coarse/fine adjustment boring head employing a transverse sleeve threaded into and extending through a boring head body providing coarse incremental radial adjustment of an insert cartridge, axially oriented within a sleeve, together with a fine radial adjustment of the cartridge relative to the sleeve effected through a differential screw having differential pitch threads with lead in the same direction.
Abstract: A boring head having a diametrical bore adjacent the working end thereof for insertion and removal of two or more interchangeable cutter holders. The cutter holders are restrained against rotational movement within the bore but not axial movement, whereby rotation of a first drive member having threaded engagement with an internally threaded longitudinal bore in the cutter holder will cause radial adjustment of the cutter holder relative to the boring head. Rotation of the first device member is accomplished by rotation of a second drive member having a gear drive connection with the first drive member. A first micrometer dial on the outer end of the first drive member provides for rough orientation of the cutter holder during such radial adjustment thereof, whereas a second micrometer dial on the outer end of the second drive member provides for extremely precise measurements of such radial adjustment.
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool holder and method for precise generation of a radial cutting bit under high speed settings includes a rotary housing having an axially mounted actuating bar, a cylindrical shank with attached cutting bit rotatably mounted in a second recess within the housing and extending outwardly from the bar axis. Coupling and engaging means are matingly disposed on the bar and shank for translating axial actuating bar movement into rotational shank movement for radial generation of the cutting bit.
Abstract: The present invention is a device for adjusting eccentricity of the design axis of rotation of a rotary tool (12) with regard to the axis of rotation of a drive spindle (10). The housing also accommodates a fork arranged coaxially with the former and pressed against the carriage by a spring. At the ends of the fork are two slanted surfaces which are symmetrical with respect to the axis of rotation of the boring head. The fork interacts with the carriage on lines found in a plane extending through the axis of rotation of the boring head. The head further incorporates a rocker whose axle is installed in the housing on the side facing the two slanted surfaces of the carriage. The axle is parallel with the axis of rotation of the boring head.
Abstract: Adjustment of the radial position of the tool bit is accomplished by insertion of the bit in a recess of a clamping shoe which clamps the bit against a shoulder in the cutter head. The clamping shoe has an extension which is rotatably mounted in a recess in the cutter head. A single wedge-shaped adjustment member rotates the clamping shoe with the cutter blade thereby changing the radial distance between the cutting edge and the axis of rotation of the tool.

Abstract: In the known, adjustable, single-cutting-edge machine reamers having a turnable cutting plate, the adjusting and re-adjusting operations are awkward and associated with difficulties because, at least as far as adjusting is concerned, adjustments have to be made at two points, and moreover for adjusting to the set desired value it is generally necessary to proceed in a step-by-step manner, gradually working ones way up to the desired value. These problems are due to the fact that adjustment can in principle only be made in the forward direction, that is to say in the direction of increasing diameter, whereas reverse adjustment in the proper meaning of the term is not possible but can only be achieved indirectly by carrying out a new adjustment with a lower starting value and adjusting in a forward direction.
Abstract: A boring tool for producing undercuts in preformed holes. The boring tool has a cutting element which is provided at one end of a driving shaft. In order to produce the undercut, the driving shaft can be deflected at right angles to the axis thereof via a deflection mechanism. The deflection mechanism is accommodated in the boring tool, and is provided with a longitudinally displaceable deflection rod for positively deflecting the driving shaft. In the deflected position, the driving shaft is driven by a rotary drive which is separate from the turning drive. As a result, the undercuts can be very precisely produced.

Abstract: An improvement in a boring bar assembly is disclosed. The improvement relates to a lateral bar assembly in combination with the adjustable boring bar assembly of U.S. Pat. No. 2,838,316 issued to Albert Thomas, a co-inventor of the present invention. The improvement includes a lateral bar to which a major portion of the shank member of the boring bar assembly is removably fixed.
