Abstract: A multi-functional mold which is used for encapsulating chips placed on lead frames is characterized by a chamber arranged in one of the mold halves in which an insert can be replaceably arranged. Depending on the use of the mold in the context of the so-called transfer molding method or injection molding method a different insert is placed in the chamber. In the application as transfer mold the insert includes an elongate member with a bore for guiding a plunger which makes encapsulating material liquid due to the pressure applied thereto and the increasing in temperature. In the application as injection mold the insert includes a member with a through-channel allowing a plasticized encapsulating material coming from a nozzle of an injection molding device to flow into the mold.

A first presser at the central molding station applies a closure pressure necessary for the material injection, while auxiliary presser arranged in each station applies a reduced secondary pressure to the molds at the end of the injection step, during the translatory motion of the mold and during the cooling step.

Abstract: In a press, a platen has opposed fluid, preferably hydraulically, actuated clamp blocks thereon. Each block functions to register with an open-ended slot in a tool mount plate and upon translation of the block to enter an offset slot section in a clamped or locked relationship. The offset slot sections are opposed one another, wedge-shaped, and complementary to block configuration. The tool mount plate can be quickly and conveniently attached and aligned or removed from the platen as needed.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for directing at least two flows of synthetic material from an extruder to an extruder cross-head for coating a conductor wire with two layers of insulating material and to readily reverse the colors of the layers. The apparatus includes at least two separate tubes which communicate with an extruder outlet for directing synthetic material from the extruder outlet to the respective tube. The tubes communicate at their outlet ends with respective inlet openings of the extruder head. A rotator block is arranged to selectively and quickly reverse the positions of the outlet openings of the tubes with respect to the inlet openings of the extruder head such that after reversal, the outlet opening of each tube communicates with the other inlet opening of the cross-head. Thus, the capability to reverse the flows of insulating material is provided thereby making it possible to reverse the colors of the inner and outer layers of insulating material on the conductor wire.

Abstract: A structure for releasably securing a plurality of mold inserts to a mold plate attached to a power press machine is disclosed. The mold plate has a plurality of apertures formed therethrough. Within each aperture, a plurality of inwardly extending spaced apart protrusions are formed. The mold inserts include end portions having a plurality of tabs formed thereon. A mold insert is inserted within an aperture by aligning the tabs with the spaces between the protrusions and moving the mold insert axially therein. Then, by rotating the mold insert relative to the mold plate, the tabs are moved over the protrusions. As a result, the mold insert is retained within the aperture. Locking bars prevent rotation of the mold inserts at undesired times to prevent them from being removed from the mold plate. A locking mechanism may be used to secure the locking bars, and therefore the mold inserts, in their locked positions during use.
