  • Patent number: 4343754
Abstract: A process for making a composite closure having a plastic cap with specially configured pedestals that are interconnected to a plastic liner. In one embodiment, the pedestals are each formed with an overhang, such as a mushroom-shaped overhang, to provide a mechanical interlock with the liner. In other embodiments, the pedestals are each formed with a fusible heat concentration zone that is fused to the liner as the liner is compression molded and heated in the cap. In one embodiment, each of the fusible pedestals are formed with a cylindrical configuration. In another embodiment, each of the fusible pedestals are formed in the shape of a pyramid.

  • Patent number: 4317420
Abstract: An apparatus for making head pieces for containers with a membrane of laminate having a metallic barrier layer, is designed to make one-piece head pieces, of a thermoplastic material with a mouthpiece neck, a cone-like breast part next to it, a ring-shoulder next to the breast part, a ready-made round plate and a membrane of a laminate with a metallic barrier layer. From a tape of laminate with a metallic barrier layer, using a deep drawing operation, the round plate is produced in a form representative of the outline of the head piece to be produced, is stamped out and is then run down into a mold. At the same time as the lowering the membrane is stamped out of the center part and is kept in position. After this thermoplastic material is placed in the mold and then the membrane is lowered into its last position in the mold and at the same time as the lowering of the membrane pressing of the thermoplastic material in the mold takes place.

  • Patent number: 4261940
Abstract: Sticks of foamable thermoplastic material are provided with grooves in at least one surface. These grooves extend width-wise of the stick. In addition, the grooves are disposed in equi-spaced relation along one surface of the stick, or in spaced-apart series or groups on only one surface, or in series or groups on opposite surfaces and in spaced-apart relation. Upon foaming, the sticks form foamed elements of various shapes, each of which has at least one curvilinear portion such as, for example, a corkscrew shape, an annular shape or shapes with reverse bends.

  • Patent number: 4218207
Abstract: Dough-dividing and forming apparatus particularly adapted for forming toroid-shaped articles such as bagels, or the like, is disclosed. A first rotary plate member containing a plurality of cylindrical openings receives a cylindical ribbon of dough into the openings and shears the dough into disc-shaped dough lumps. The dough lumps are subsequently flattened in the center to form a web and pierced to form a generally annular shape. During the piercing operation, the dough lumps are transferred to a second rotary plate member carrying a plurality of tapered, cylindrical forming cups. As the second plate member is indexed between rotary positions, a plurality of cylindrical mandrels are repeatedly thrust into and out of the forming cups to roll the dough lumps internally along the length of the forming cups whereby the desired shape is formed.

  • Patent number: 4217085
Abstract: An arrangement for the processing of a moving material web, in particular for the creasing or punching of an extruded material web made of plastics. In the manufacture of such material webs a number of operational steps take place directly in conjunction with the manufacture of the web itself, and the fact that for reasons of quality as well as of manufacturing technique the extrusion process cannot be interrupted makes it necessary to attend to any changes in the crease pattern etc. during operation. The arrangement in accordance with the invention makes this possible, in that the material web can be brought into contact optionally with different pairs of processing rollers with the help of a pair of counter-rollers supported in a swivelling cradle, any pair of unused rollers being freely exchangeable against a pair of rollers with a different creasing pattern.

  • Patent number: 4142848
Abstract: A hinged carton integrally molded of polystyrene foam and adapted to be locked shut by a flap extending upwardly from the bottom part of the carton inside a side wall of the carton cover and carrying one or more prongs so that the latter will be biased outwardly to snap into a corresponding number of holes provided in said cover side wall, the ruggedness of said carton being materially enhanced over similar cartons of the prior art by the local beefing up of said cover side wall in the immediate areas bordering said holes incidental to the functioning of a novel method of and apparatus for manufacturing said carton. Said apparatus is embodied optionally in a forming tool or in a form-and-trim tool and embraces relatively vertically reciprocable carton shaping matched-molds operating on a heated thermo-plastic web of polystyrene foam to produce one or more entire cartons with each reciprocation.

  • Patent number: 4119452
Abstract: A method of manufacturing packaging-container blanks is disclosed which method includes forming a substantially continuous sheet of blanks which sheet comprises a substrate and a coating material attached to said substrate. The coating material at the edges of the blanks of said sheet either extends beyond the substrate or is unattached to the substrate adjacent the edge, or both. The sheet of blanks is manufactured by extruding a molten thermoplastic coating material onto the substrate between two revolving cylindrical rolls. The substrate and the coating material are joined in such a manner that at spaced, selected intervals, elongated zones are provided where they are unattached to each other.

  • Patent number: 4075359
Abstract: The method of forming flat dough pieces for producing flat perforated crackers by placing a thin continuous sheet of cracker dough on a fabric belt and cutting the dough with a die which cuts circles in the dough sheet and simultaneously presses the cut out dough sections against the fabric belt with sufficient force to cause them to adhere thereto. The die also cuts the dough sheet into longitudinal strips and scores the strips to define individual product pieces. The dough strips are lifted off the fabric belt and thus separated from the cut out dough sections which are subsequently removed from the belt by a scraping blade.

  • Patent number: 3990827
Abstract: Apparatus for continuously making corrugated plastic pipes having enlarged coupler collars on one end thereof by continuously extruding a tube of plastic material into a molding zone especially constructed to mold the tube into a series of successively closely spaced body-forming lengths of annularly corrugated pipe with short integral relatively enlarged sleeves interconnecting adjacent body-forming lengths. The thus molded tube is severed along a line about halfway between opposite ends of each successive sleeve to form each sleeve into a pair of separate coupler collars, and the molded tube also is severed along a line about halfway between opposite ends of each corrugated body-forming length thereof. The molding zone is constructed so as to form a plurality of latch members integral with and extending interiorly from each coupler collar, which latch members are adapted to engage the ribs on the opposite end of another like pipe for releasable connection therewith.
