Abstract: Panels usable for construction of a surface, to provide the surface with a desired appearance, durability, water, air, and fire resistance, dimensions, and weight include a layer of substrate material having first and second sides. Finish elements are positioned on the first side, while a backing material is positioned on the second side, such that the substrate bonds the finish elements to the backing material. Particulate material can also be included, such as within spaces between finish elements. Manufacture of such panels can include use of a vacuum system that acquires finish elements in a selected orientation, acquires particulate material into spaces unoccupied by finish elements, then deposits the arranged finish elements and particulate material into a mold for subsequent manufacturing steps. Use of lightweight, durable materials, such as magnesium oxide, can enable panels having a reduced thickness and weight to be manufactured, without sacrificing durability or longevity.

Abstract: Techniques or processes for providing markings on products are disclosed. In one embodiment, the products have housings and the markings are to be provided on sub-surfaces of the housings. For example, a housing for a particular product can include an outer housing surface and the markings can be provided on a sub-surface of the outer housing surface yet still be visible from the outside of the housing. Since the markings are beneath the surface of the housing, the markings are durable.

Abstract: A tag for labeling an object includes a body and an elastic band formed integrally with the body. The body includes two main opposing outer surfaces and a peripheral surface therebetween, and the band extends substantially from one side of the peripheral surface of the body to form a closed loop. The body and the band can be made from silicone, and are configured such that the band can be wrapped around an appendage of the object to allow the body to be inserted through the loop, thereby forming a knot that secures the tag onto the object. The knot can be untied by loosening the band and pulling the body back out through the loop. A method of manufacturing the tag, as well as methods of using the tag, is also disclosed.

Abstract: A system for dispensing texture material comprises a container, an outlet assembly, and an aerosol valve assembly. The container stores texture material and propellant material. The aerosol valve assembly is arranged to allow control of fluid flowing out of the container. The outlet assembly is configured such that the cross-sectional area of the outlet opening corresponds to the desired pattern. The aerosol valve assembly is operated to allow the propellant material to force the texture material out of the container through the outlet opening defined by the outlet assembly. The texture material forced out of the container is deposited on the target surface in the desired pattern.

Abstract: Perpendicular nanostructures with small feature dimensions in thin films and related methods of fabrication are provided. In some embodiments, the methods include directed assembly of poly(styrene-b-glycolic acid) (PS-b-PGA), poly(styrene-b-lactic acid) (PS-b-PLA) and other block copolymers containing PGA or a derivative thereof. The block copolymer films can be directed to assemble on chemical patterns such that the nanostructures extend through the thickness of the film, without forming a wetting layer at the free surface. The nanostructures can have sub-10 nm feature dimensions.

  • Patent number: 8623493
Abstract: Methods of fabricating complex three-dimensional structures on patterned substrates and related compositions are provided. The methods involve depositing on the substrate a block copolymer material that is “mismatched” to the substrate pattern, and then ordering the material to form a complex three-dimensional structure. According to various embodiments, the copolymer material mismatches the substrate pattern in that the symmetry and/or length scale of its bulk morphology differs from that of the pattern. When ordered, a balance between the physics that determines the bulk block copolymer morphology and the physics that determines the substrate surface interfacial interactions results in a thermodynamically stable complex three-dimensional film that varies in a direction perpendicular to the substrate and has a morphology that differs from its bulk morphology.

  • Patent number: 8623458
Abstract: A layered structure comprising a self-assembled material is formed by a method that includes forming a photochemically, thermally and/or chemically treated patterned photoresist layer disposed on a first surface of a substrate. The treated patterned photoresist layer comprises a non-crosslinked treated photoresist. An orientation control material is cast on the treated patterned photoresist layer, forming a layer containing orientation control material bound to a second surface of the substrate. The treated photoresist and, optionally, any non-bound orientation control material are removed by a development process, resulting in a pre-pattern for self-assembly. A material capable of self-assembly is cast on the pre-pattern. The casted material is allowed to self-assemble with optional heating and/or annealing to produce the layered structure.
