Patent number: 5922473Abstract: Opaquely pigmented or thick filmed powder coatings for heat sensitive substrates, such as wood, wood composites, for example, medium density fiber board, and plastics, that can be fully cured, especially near the substrate, through the incorporation of a dual cure system in the powder comprising a thermal initiator, such as a peroxide, along with a UV initiator. The UV initiator cures the surface, while the thermal initiator cures at the substrate. Surprisingly, virtually no pregelation occurs during the heated melt and flow out step prior to UV curing. Consequently, the hardened film finish formed on the surface exhibits exceptional smoothness which is comparable to that of traditional UV curable powders. The hardened film finish is also fully cured throughout and exhibits exceptional adhesion to the substrate which cannot be achieved with traditional UV curable powders that have been pigmented.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1996Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Assignee: Morton International, Inc.Inventors: Jeno Muthiah, Andrew T. Patent number: 5922457Abstract: The matte finished coated paper is a paper web having a smoothness of 0.5 to 20 seconds, when measured pursuant to JIS P8119, and a surface roughness Ra of 3.2 to 7.0 .mu.m, when measured pursuant to JIS B0601, provided with a surface coating on at least one side containing polyolefin resin particles, an adhesive and a pigment. The pigment includes porous particles of organic pigment material and calcium carbonate particles. The porous particles of organic pigment material have an oil absorbancy of 80 to 400 ml/100 g when measured pursuant to JIS K5101, each calcium carbonate particle has an average particle diameter of 1.0 to 10 .mu.m and each polyolefin resin particle has an average diameter of 8 to 30 .mu.m. The surface coating has a degree of gloss in a range of from 1 to 10%, when measured pursuant to JIS P8142 at 75.degree. C., a smoothness in a range of from 1 to 25 seconds, when measured pursuant to JIS P8119, and a surface roughness Ra in a range of from 2.0 .mu.m to 6.0 .mu.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1997Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Assignee: Oji Paper Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kenji Yanagisawa, Syunichi Uchimura, Terunobu Fukui

Patent number: H1967Abstract: A method of improving the adhesion of an ink jet ink formulation to a substrate, which method includes adding to the ink jet ink formulation an amount of a chelate of a transition metal or a chelate of a mixture of transition metals effective to improve the adhesion of the ink jet ink formulation to the substrate; printing the substrate with the chelate-containing ink jet ink formulation; and treating the printed substrate with heat for a time and at a temperature to further improve the adhesion of the ink jet ink formulation to the substrate. The ink jet ink formulation typically will include a diluent system and colorant. The chelate typically will be present in the ink jet ink formulation in a range of about 0.001 up to about 20 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the chelate-containing ink jet ink formulation. A particularly desirable chelate is zirconium lactate. The present invention also provides an article and a substrate produced by the foregoing method.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1998Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventor: Jerome A.
