Nonplanar Uniform Thickness Material Patents (Class 428/174)
  • Patent number: 7666493
Abstract: Producing a composite structure involves providing a core structure having a folded configuration with fold valleys forming open channels extending along the valleys, and then forming a local reinforcement zone in the core structure itself, before applying any cover layer onto the core structure. The method may further involve applying two cover layers on two opposite sides of the core structure to form a composite sandwich structure, after the local reinforcement zone has been formed in the core structure. A core structure preferably has a local reinforcement zone formed by two molded bodies, e.g. of cured synthetic resin or foam, arranged form-fittingly on the opposite sides of the core.

Abstract: A multilayer armor plating material contains a single-piece or multi-piece ceramic or metallic layer which, as seen in the direction of attack, is followed by a rear supporting layer of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP) and/or of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CRP). As seen in the direction of attack the ceramic or metallic layer is preceded by a front supporting layer of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP) and/or carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CRP). As a result, the steel or ceramic layer is optimally embedded in a composite between the front and rear supporting layers and thereby supported. This in particular protects the ceramic or steel material from harmful vibrations caused by repeated impact of projectiles, on account of the higher rigidity of the structure reducing the vibration amplitudes.

Methods include steps of designing and then separately forming longitudinally extending slits or grooves through the sheet of material in axially spaced relation to produce precise bending of the sheet when bent along the bend line. The bending straps have a configuration and orientation which increases their strength and fatigue resistance, and most preferably slits or arcs are used which causes edges to be engaged and supported on faces of the sheet material on opposite sides of the slits or arcs. Abstract: An apparatus for producing an embossed product including a first embossing member having a plurality of discrete embossing elements disposed in a first non-random pattern having at least one first single pattern unit. The total area of the distal ends of the discrete embossing elements in the first single pattern unit is less than about 5.0 cm2. The apparatus also includes a second embossing member having a plurality of linear embossing elements disposed in a second non-random pattern having at least one second single pattern unit. The total area of the second distal ends in the second single pattern unit is less than about 10 cm2. The second non-random pattern is coordinated with the first non-random pattern such that when engaged with each other the first single pattern unit and the second single pattern unit make up an embossing pattern single pattern unit.

Abstract: A two-dimensional sheet material is provided that is suitable for bending along a bend line to form a three-dimensional object. The sheet material is provided with a plurality of displacements in a thickness direction of the sheet material on one side of the bend line. A portion of the displacements shear adjacent the bend line and define an edge and an opposed face. The edge and opposed face configured to produce edge-to-face engagement of the sheet material during bending. Alternatively, sheet material is provided with a plurality of displacements in a thickness direction of the sheet material on one or both sides of the bend line, and with a plurality of corresponding and cooperating protrusions to improve structural integrity and/or to improve electromagnetic and radio frequency shielding. The sheet material may also be provided with a self-latching structure. A method of preparing and using these sheet materials is also described.

Abstract: A soft and resilient, cold-water dispersible polyurethane foam suitable for disposable personal care products is produced by the combination of corn syrup, glycerin, polyether diamine, PEG, a diisocyanate, water and a catalyst. The formulation and reaction conditions for forming the inventive foam are judiciously selected and carefully controlled to achieve water dispersibility and the desired mechanical properties. The characteristic resiliency, or percent rebound for the foams was generally over 75% and the foams are readily produced as soft foams, exhibiting a relative compression value of from 20% to 150% of that of a commercial polyurethane foam cosmetic pad which is not water dispersible. The foam may be incorporated into webs or stackable products or nestable three-dimensional products.
