  • Patent number: 6855431
Abstract: The present invention relates to electrochromic polymeric solid films, manufacturing electrochromic devices using such solid films and processes for making such solid films and devices. The electrochromic polymeric solid films of the present invention exhibit beneficial properties and characteristics, especially when compared to known electrochromic media. The electrochromic polymeric solid films are transformed in situ from a low viscosity electrochromic monomer composition by exposure to electromagnetic radiation, and in so doing minimum shrinkage occurs. The electrochromic polymeric solid films of the present invention also perform well under prolonged coloration, outdoor weathering and all-climate exposure, and provide an inherent safety aspect not known to electrochromic media heretofore.

  • Patent number: 6849328
Abstract: A method and coating are provided for temporarily protecting a substrate or article during shipping, handling or storage by applying a removable protective coating over at least a portion of the substrate. The substrate may be flat or curved and may have zero, one or more functional coatings. A plurality of substrates with the protective coating of the invention may be arranged in a shipping container so that the protective coating reduces the possibility of damage to the substrate or optional functional coating. In one embodiment, the protective coating is the evaporation or reaction product of an aqueous coating composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol polymer which may be subsequently removed by aqueous washing, thermal decomposition or combustion. In another embodiment, the protective coating is formed by sputtering a substantially carbon coating onto the substrate. The carbon coating is subsequently removed by combustion.

The plastic is heated up, thereby lowering its viscosity, at least in the region of a predetermined cutting line. A cutting tool is placed onto the plastic side of the laminate, the loading pressure being adjustable. By moving cutting tool relative to the laminate along the predetermined cutting line, the plastic is severed; at the same time the brittle material is scored, thereby inducing a mechanical stress. If appropriate, the mechanical stress along the cutting line is subsequently increased to exceed the rupture strength of the scored brittle material. A preferred application is the cutting of thin glass or glass-ceramic/plastic laminates.

Abstract: A fire-resistant laminated glass pane assembly comprises a glass-ceramic pane resistant to high temperatures and having rough light-diffusing surfaces, the said pane being joined, on each of its two faces, to a silicate glass pane by means of transparent intermediate layers having a refractive index corresponding to the refractive index of the glass and the glass-ceramic. Transparent intermediate plies consist of a thermoplastic polymer having a high splinter fixation effect, and the silicate glass panes consist of tempered float glass. Fire-retarding glasses of this type not only have a high fire-retarding effect, but also withstand the so-called extinguishing water test and, moreover, have safety glass properties with increased safety in respect of injuries caused by splinters.

  • Patent number: 6457200
Abstract: A pressure-sensitive cleaning sheet is disclosed which comprises a substrate, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer formed on one or both sides of the substrate, and a porous screen disposed on the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer. The cleaning sheet is substantially non-tacky when the cleaning sheet surface is kept in a non-pressed state, and exhibits tackiness when the cleaning sheet surface is kept in a pressed state. Also disclosed are a method of using the cleaning sheet, an image-forming material having a cleaning part, and a method of cleaning an image-forming apparatus. These are useful for the cleaning of, e.g., the magnetic reading parts and magnetic-card transport parts of apparatuses accepting various magnetic cards and the thermal heads and/or transport rollers of various recording apparatuses.

  • Publication number: 20020136907
Abstract: A method of protecting a glass substrate, especially a display glass or a hard disk blank made from a glass or a glass-ceramic, from unacceptable surface damage and scratches, often leading to glass breakage, during processing and transport, is described. This protective method includes applying a removable protective coating made of at least one polymer layer, or at least one polyvinyl alcohol layer, to the glass substrates by spraying or rolling the polyvinyl alcohol or a polymer solution of the polymer to be applied in a polar organic solvent, onto the glass substrate, or dipping the substrate into it. Then when the substrate is ready for its end use, the protective coating is removed by washing in water or polar organic solution so that a residue does not remain on it. The glass substrates, protected in this manner have outstanding surface quality and improved hard disk blanks can be economically produced from them.

  • Patent number: 6447897
Abstract: Poly-n-isopropylacrylamide surface coatings demonstrate the useful property of being able to switch charateristics depending upon temperature. More specifically, these coatings switch from being hydrophilic at low temperature to hydrophobic at high temperature. Research has been conducted for many years to better characterize and control the properties of temperature sensitive coatings. The present invention provides novel temperature sensitive coatings on articles and novel methods of making temperature sensitive coatings that are disposed on the surfaces of various articles. These novel coatings contain the reaction products of n-isopropylacrylamide and are characterized by their properties such as advancing contact angles. Numerous other characteristics such as coating thickness, surface roughness, and hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic transition temperatures are also described.

Abstract: High clarity optical and safety glass laminate interlayer films and optical laminates are described. The films and their laminates comprise very low density polyethylene and/or its copolymers, preferably polymerized with metallocene catalysts, and modified with additives, such as coupling agents, clarifying or nucleation agents, UV-light absorbers, pigment or color concentrate, and IR-light blockers. The very low density polyethylene is laminated to EVA film for improved bondability in optical laminates.

Abstract: The present invention relates to electrochromic ploymeric solid films, manufacturing electrochromic devices using such solid films and processes for making such solid films and devices. The electrochromic polymeric solid films of the present invention also perform will under prolonged coloration, outdoor weathering and all-climate exposure, and provide an inherent safety aspect not known to electrochromic media heretofore.
