With Control Means Responsive To Battery Condition Sensing Means Patents (Class 429/61)
  • Patent number: 8741458
Abstract: A battery assembly includes a sealed battery cell container holds a positive and negative electrode and an electrolyte. Deflection-responsive means engages at least one outer face of the container and is responsive to deflection thereof for operating a cut-off switch to break the electrical continuity of the battery assembly. Flat battery cell containers may be stacked in different arrangements within a coupling structure, the arrangements defining either a cavity between the coupling structure and an adjacent container face, or a cavity between faces of adjacent cell containers. A membrane switch received in the cavity is actuated by bulging of a cell container wall. A control circuit operates the cut-off switch in response to actuation of the membrane switch.

Abstract: A secondary battery includes a case having positive and negative electrodes, a safety device attached to a surface of the case and having a resistance value which changes during swelling of the case, and a protective circuit module attached to a side of the case while being electrically connected to the safety device. The resistance value of the safety device changes as the case swells, and the protective circuit module reduces or interrupts charging/discharging currents in response thereto. The safety device can be used for all secondary batteries regardless of capacity, can quickly react against abruptly rising internal temperature and rapid swelling, and can stably prevent swelling which occurs above an allowable temperature.

Abstract: A lithium-ion secondary battery having a positive electrode capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions, a negative electrode capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions, a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, an electrolytic solution, and a current breaking mechanism that activates in response to the rise of the battery's internal pressure, wherein the electrolytic solution is incorporated with an aromatic compound and the separator is incorporated with a carbon dioxide gas generating agent which is represented by the formula AxCO3 or AyHCO3. It is highly responsive to overcharging owing to the current breaking mechanism attached thereto which activates in the early stage of overcharging. Therefore, it exhibits high battery performance as well as high safety in the case of overcharging.

Abstract: A controller identifies a condition of a hazardous internal short by comparing patterns of series element voltages to the last known balance condition of the series elements. If the loaded or resting voltage of one or more contiguous series elements uniformly drop from the previously known condition by an amount consistent with an over-current condition, an over-current internal short circuit fault is registered. The desired response is to prevent the affected series elements from heating to a hazardous temperature by summoning the maximum heat rejection capability of the system until the short ceases and the affected elements cool, the cooling function is no longer able to operate due to low voltage, or the affected series string has drained all of its energy through the short. Also includes are responses that allow the battery pack to continue to power the cooling system even though it may enter an over-discharged state.

Abstract: A battery (e.g., lithium-ion) cell having fewer components than conventional cells. A metallic housing, having a winding element, two current collectors, and an electrolyte, is closed off in a gas- and pressure-tight manner with a cover assembly having a cover plate by which a housing opening is largely closed off. A click spring area (formable in this plate) has a smaller thickness than surrounding areas of the plate, and can snap from a first state, in which the click spring area is bent inwardly into the housing, into a second state in which the click spring area is bent outwardly from the housing when a threshold internal pressure in the housing is exceeded, and establishes an electrical connection between the plate and a current collector. When there is a pressure rise in the housing due to temperature, for example, the battery cell may be deactivated in a targeted manner.
