Patent number: 6816574Abstract: A high voltage connector assembly is disclosed for use with high power apparatus including x-ray devices. The present connector is a pancake-style connector, and interconnects a high voltage cable with the cathode of the x-ray tube. The present connector includes a housing, a socket assembly, and insulating material surrounding the socket assembly to insulate it from the housing. The socket assembly comprises a potting-filled conductive sleeve having a continuously shaped, smooth terminal end. The terminal end of the sleeve forms a triple junction with the insulating material and air present near the sleeve. The continuously smooth terminal sleeve end prevents electrical arcing to occur at the triple junction by reducing field strength at the terminal end and urging the electric field of the socket assembly away from the triple junction. The reduction in electrical arcing propensity allows the x-ray device to operate at relatively higher operating voltages.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2002Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Varian Medical Systems, Inc.Inventor: Wayne Hansen

The main contact (12, 112) will be disconnected first and the auxiliary contact (16, 130) can be longer than the main contact (12, 112). Arcing will not occur at the mating end of the main contact (12, 112), because the current will be shunted to the still connected longer auxiliary contact (16, 130). I2R heating will increase the resistance in the PTC resistor (6, 140), so when the auxiliary contact (16, 130) is disconnected, current will be below the arcing threshold.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2001Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Tyco Electronics CorpInventors: Charles Dudley Copper, Henry O. Publication number: 20030176093Abstract: Provided is a pair of arc discharge suppressive terminals electrically communicable with each other by engagement of the terminal pair. At least one of the terminal pair has a final contact site which is in contact with the counterpart terminal at a final stag of disengagement of the terminal pair. At least the final contact site is covered with an arc discharge suppressive layer containing a first metal having a melting point of 1,550° C. or higher. It is preferable that the terminal pair contact with each other at a portion corresponding to a main contact site other than the arc discharge suppressive layer in a completely engaged state where the one of the terminal pair and the counterpart terminal are tightly engaged with each other. Preferably, the main contact site has a surface made of a material having a higher conductivity than the arc discharge suppressive layer. This arrangement effectively suppresses occurrence of arc discharge at a time of disengagement of the terminal pair.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 25, 2003Publication date: September 18, 2003Applicant: Autonetworks Technologies, Ltd.Inventors: Kouji Ota, Hiroki Hirai, Yoshitsugu Tsuji, Satoshi Takano, Masahiro Shibata, Atsushi Kimura, Masahiko Kanda, Narito Yagi, Noriki Hayashi

Patent number: 6621401Abstract: A self-recovering current-limiting device with a liquid metal includes two T-shaped electrodes for connection to an electric circuit to be protected. Each of the electrodes are made of a solid metal. Several compressor cavities which are partially filled with the liquid metal are situated one behind the other between the electrodes. The compressor cavities are formed by pressure-proof insulating bodies and by insulating intermediate walls which are provided with connecting channels and which are held by the insulating bodies. The insulating bodies and the intermediate walls form a uniform upper and lower half shell with opposite-lying joining surfaces. The half shells are connected in a sealed manner along joining surfaces in the area of a common middle plane of the connecting channels. Up to half of each of the electrodes is accommodated in corresponding recesses of the half shells, the electrodes extending with their respective middle limb out of the half shells.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2002Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Moeller GmbHInventors: Wolfgang Kremers, Frank Berger, Thomas Freyermuth, Andreas Kraetzschmar

Patent number: 6616468Abstract: A connector comprises a male-type connector having a male-type housing and a male-type terminal housed therein, and a female-type connector having a female-type housing and a female-type terminal housed therein. A pair of permanent magnets is attached to both sides of the inner surface of the male-type housing so as to sandwich the top end portion of the male-type terminal. Due to the magnetic field of the permanent magnets, the arc is diffracted and extended by Lorentz force. Therefore, melting, melting of the terminal portion and occurrence of an automobile fire owing to discharge are prevented.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Fujikura Ltd.Inventor: Koji Sakiyama

Patent number: 6604955Abstract: An electronic circuit protection device includes a first receiving capable of receiving a first connector. The device also includes two pair of resilient contact arms electrically coupled to the first receiving portion. The contact arms are capable of receiving a second connector. The device electronically couples the first connector to the second connector when the first connector and the second connector are inserted into the device. The device provides protection from electrostatic discharge by providing an electrically conductive path to ground, which bypasses components, which may be harmed by resultant potentially harmful currents. In one embodiment, the device is compliant with PCMCIA and JEIDA standards.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2001Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Avaya Technology Corp.Inventors: David Brian Dawson, Matthew J.
