Portable Abrader Patents (Class 451/344)
  • Patent number: 6494771
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting an abrasive material includes a flexible base defined by a first end and a second end, and by a lower surface which supports the abrasive material and an upper surface opposite the lower surface. The flexible base is fabricated from a resilient material so as to assume an essentially flat shape when the ends of the flexible base are not acted on by external forces. A front frame is member attached to the flexible base proximate the first end, and a rear frame member is attached to the flexible base proximate the second end. An adjustable connecting link has a first end connected to the front frame member in fixed relation thereto. A second end of the adjustable connecting link is connected to the rear frame member by a variably positionable connection.

Abstract: A hand held tool using continuous sanding belts for sanding and smoothing flat surfaces with the additional capability to produce more uniformly rounded edges and corners of various work pieces. Its two piece construction comprises a flat base plate rotationally attached to the bottom side of a housing. The housing has along the length of its top side a deep channel into which a portion of a mounted sanding belt may be wedged, creating a concave sanding surface, that can then be used to produce more uniformly rounded edges and corners.

  • Patent number: 6485360
Abstract: The orbital sander of the present invention eliminates many of the disadvantages of the prior art sanders by providing a compact, lightweight, and economical sander having a body and shroud formed from an injection-molded synthetic polymeric material. The head is replaced using a built-in plunger which engages notches in the spindle, without the need for tools. The built-in plunger enables the flexible shroud of the prior art to be replaced with a rigid polymeric shroud positioned with a minimal gap between the shroud and the head or shoe. The polymeric shroud is attached to the rest of the polymeric body structure by three screws and two pins. The pins project upwardly from the polymeric shroud and into precise engagement with the polymeric body structure, thus reducing the required drilling and tapping, providing rotational stability, and increasing the strength of the connection between the two parts.

  • Patent number: 6478666
Abstract: The invention relates to a guiding cart for a manually guided tool, for example an abrasive cut-off machine, which comprises a movable frame on which a first and a second locating recess for inserting the abrasive cut-off machine are provided. A locking device is assigned to the first recess by means of which forces can be applied to the abrasive cut-off machine in the direction of the first locating recess and the second locating recess. In this way the abrasive cut-off machine can be reliably and rapidly fixed to the guiding cart after it has been inserted into the locating recesses. The insertion of the abrasive cut-off machine is facilitated by inclined inserting elements situated in the locating recesses.

Abstract: A manual knife sharpener is provided with angle control structure. The structure includes a guide member having a guide surface which forms an angle with the abrasive surface of the sharpening member. When the blade is inserted into the space between the abrasive surface and the guide surface the blade presses against the guide surface to displace the guide surface linearly in a direction perpendicular to the guide surface so that the movement is a lateral movement in the same plane without any pivoting or twisting of the guide member. Thus, the angle between the guide surface and the abrasive surface remains constant regardless of the extent of displacement of the guide member.

Abstract: The invention relates to a power tool, in particular to an angle grinder, having a quick clamping device for fastening of a tool between a clamping flange and a counter flange. Such quick clamping devices are usually equipped with an actuation element, during the transfer of which from a clamping position into a release position the clamping is neutralized. In the quick clamping device according to the invention, the actuation element returns, on its own, and in a controlled way, when in the release position and, by accident, the motor of the power tool is turned on. For that purpose, an eccentric being mounted on the actuation element acts with its running surface onto a cam in such a way that it retains the eccentric due to the frictional force acting between the cam and the running surface.

The grinding device (1) has a main handle (6) and an additional handle (8) for the two-handed operation of the device (1), and the handles (6, 8) project essentially laterally from the central housing (4) of the device at two mutually opposite sides of the central housing (4) of the device. The central housing (4) of the device has a housing section (9), which axially adjoins the grinding disk (2), and projects laterally outwardly from the central housing (4) of the device at least in certain regions and is equipped with a gripping surface (10) for one-handed operation.

Abstract: An improved multi-purpose, direct-drive, water-driven rotary tool having improved torque and power. The present invention includes a housing having a central cavity, an impeller with angled, beveled blades around its periphery, a drive shaft connected to a rotatable mounting pad or backing pad that contains a disk with a grinding or sanding surface that is removably attached thereto. A high pressure water inlet conduit includes a changeable nozzle to allow using the tool with different water sources. The water exiting the nozzle strikes the blades of the impeller, rotating the impeller, which rotates the backing pad and sanding disk. Water is strategically diverted through a bearing mounting plate having holes by a shroud or angular flange having an angular periphery that allows the expended water from the impeller to be efficiently expelled peripherally around the outside of the main cavity of the housing.

Abstract: An abrasive cleaning apparatus has an integral drum formed of inner and outer layers of resilient material and a rigid layer in between. Holes are formed through the drum in a spiral pattern around the drum. A wire is engaged in each hole, the wire having opposing ends and three bends. One end of the wire is inside the drum with an adjacent portion lying circumferentially on an inner surface of the drum. A portion of the wire outside the drum is aligned in an opposite circumferential direction as the portion of the wire inside the drum. A retaining cylinder sandwiches the end inside the drum between itself and an inside surface of the drum, holding the wire stable. The end of the wire inside the drum is in close proximity to ends of adjacent wires, which inhibits rotation of a wire in its hole in the drum.
