Pattern Control Patents (Class 451/376)
  • Patent number: 7899572
Abstract: The machining of drills (1) includes an operation for chamfering the cutting edges (8) performed in two steps. In the first step the rotating grindstone (15) is directed to various locations of the cutting edge (8) and the point of contact is detected by an electronic appliance (17) whereof the electronic module (19) controls the stoppage of the grindstone, its return to the starting position and the recording of the position of the grindstone at the time of contact. In the second step the grindstone (15) is controlled to follow the left line obtained by connecting the points registered during the first step.

Abstract: A sharpening holder for manually-sharpening a cutting edge to be honed over a honing surface includes a body, an adjustable clamping component, and a plurality of roller members. The body has a first end, a second end and a tool support surface between the first end and the second end. The adjustable clamping component has a fastening plate positioned against the tool support surface. The fastening plate has a tool engaging surface to hold the tool against the tool support surface. The plurality of roller members are attached to a lower portion of the body adjacent the second end where the plurality of roller members are configured to allow the body to roll in a direction selected from the group consisting of sideways and in an arc on the honing surface causing the cutting edge of the tool to move parallel to the honing surface instead of perpendicular to the honing surface.

  • Patent number: 6254455
Abstract: A jig (10) for use in sharpening a cutting implement used in wood turning including a tubular body or housing (12) being mountable nearby a grinder. A tool holder (11) is located by and guided within the housing (12) so as to be pivotable about a longitudinal axis of the housing and slidable along that axis. Part of the tool passes through the housing (12) and holder (11), being attached to holder (11) so as to present a tip of the tool toward the grinder. The tool holder (11) further has a guide boss (14) engageable with a guide surface (13) on the housing such that throughout engagement a correlation exists between linear movement of the tool along the longitudinal axis and pivotal movement of the tool about the longitudinal axis, so as to enable a desired, controlled interaction between the tip of the tool and the grinder.

  • Patent number: 6110018
Abstract: An adapter for use with a powered grinding tool having a driven grinding wheel has a pivotally mounting part on a body thereof, and a drill bit holder engageable with the mounting part in either of two orientations for sharpening a tip of a drill bit clamped in a set position in the drill bit holder at the grinding wheel, the engagement being completed when the drill bit engages on a stop bar at the front of the mounting part. Also disclosed is a setting arrangement for setting the drill bit in its holder including stop means for engagement by the drill tip upon longitudinal setting of the drill bit, and drill rotation setting means slidable relative to the stop means for rotational setting of the drill bit. A powered grinding tool having the features of the adapter formed as part thereof is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5788559
Abstract: A process and apparatus for sharpening twist drill bits, for use with a rotary abrasive wheel. The apparatus has a vertical support plate connectable to a standard adjustable base. A cylindrical ring rotatably mounted in the support plate has a radial dovetailed groove on its front face. A sliding plate, with a mounting flange and hole for a chuck on its angled front face, slides in the dovetailed groove of the ring. An angled bar is mounted on the rear face of the ring, to act as an alignment pointer. Both the ring and the sliding plate each have an angled notch cut out of its front face. The two notches are adjacent to each other, and their two opposite edges are aligned when the sliding plate is centered in the ring. In use, the end of a drill bit is placed into the notches, so that the web of the drill bit can be used as a measurement to offset the position of the sliding plate from center.

  • Patent number: 5573452
Abstract: A drill grinder includes a feed means in which a sleeve, a first cam, a second cam, and a second casing are engaged in sequence, the sleeve having a disk which has two diametrically opposite formed plane portions and two first wheels rotatably engaged thereto for rolling on the first cam which is equipped with two second wheels for rolling on the second cam and the first cam can only longitudinally be moved in the first casing, the second cam having a ratchet wheel disposed thereto, both of the second cam and the ratchet wheel are mounted to a tubular portion of the second casing in which a ring-type gear engaged for a belt connected, the first casing pivotally engaged to a base by a certain angle corresponding to an axis of the first casing, a start means having a fork to actuate the ratchet wheel and an inspecting means having a probe to contact the disk and a grinding wheel means having a grinding wheel which has a longitudinal axis intersecting the axis of the first casing at an angle, such that the sleev

  • Patent number: 5480345
Abstract: This invention relates to a knife sharpener and more particularly to a knife sharpening device wherein the knife is clamped in a fixed position on a table or platform and the knife sharpening or grinding device is moved along the edge of the knife to be sharpened. The knife sharpening or grinding device is clamped into an adjustable arm which is attached to a roller. The roller slides along a track formed in the table or platform which has the identical configuration as the knife blade. Therefore, the edge of the sharpener or grinding device is maintained in constant contact with the edge of the knife during the sharpening. This prevents the problem of knives being sharpened unevenly and inaccurately, as is often seen in conventional knife sharpening methods.
