  • Patent number: 9649736
Abstract: An apparatus and associated method contemplating handling a workpiece on a surface. A mounting block is selectively movable in a first direction toward the surface. A finger is coupled to the mounting block so that the finger is retractable in a second nonparallel direction opposed to the first direction. The finger supports an engagement member operably contacting the workpiece and subject to a reaction force from the workpiece that retracts the finger during movement of the mounting block in the first direction. The engagement member traverses the surface as a result of simultaneous movement of the mounting block in the first direction and retraction of the finger in the second direction.

  • Publication number: 20140213160
Abstract: An apparatus for sharpening blades, such as those used for mowing. A rotary grinder is mounted within an extensible, retractable, and rotatable support assembly. Lockable, rotational adjustment of the position of the grinder about three axes, and translational movement along one axis is thereby provided. A spring attached to one end of the assembly counter-balances the weight of the grinder. An adjacent blade holding fixture maintains the workpiece at a predetermined angle for grinding. A toggle clamp, edge alignment keepers, and a registration pin secure the blade in place. An adapter fixture, including a toggle clamp and an alignment recess, attaches to one end of the blade holding fixture. The adapter fixture has an angled shelf to orient and secure smaller, contoured blades requiring a different edge grinding angle. Once the support assembly is adjustably secured, the grinder is moved along the cutting edge of the blade for sharpening.

Abstract: Provided are magnetically actuated wafer chucks that permit a wafer to be clamped or unclamped at any time during a process and at any rotational speed, as desired. Such wafer chucks may include constraining members that are movable between open and closed positions. In a closed position, a constraining member aligns the wafer after wafer handoff and/or clamps the wafer during rotation to prevent it from flying off the chuck. In an open position, the constraining member moves away from the wafer to allow liquid etchant to flow from the wafer edge without obstruction. The constraining members may be, for example, cams, attached to arms or links of the chuck. The cams or other constraining members move between open and closed positions by self-balancing forces including a first force, such as a spring force, that acts to move a cam in a first direction, and a non-contact actuate-able force, such as a magnetic force, that acts to move the cam in the opposite direction.

Abstract: Methods and devices are disclosed for holding an optical element in an optical column with reduced stress (e.g., thermal stress) to the optical element. The devices and methods are especially useful for holding reflective optical elements in an optical column of an optical system used for extreme ultraviolet lithography. The devices allow the elements to be mounted and detached readily from the column. In an embodiment, the device includes multiple anchoring members that attach to respective locations on the optical element. The anchoring members are, in turn, mounted in a mounting frame by a releasable attachment mechanism. Each anchoring member has at least a compliant region configured to prevent transmission of stress to and from the optical element.

Abstract: A knife sharpening system for sharpening blade edges of knives. The knife sharpening system includes a base portion having an elongate guide rail having a top surface at a first level, a knife support for maintaining a blade of a knife being sharpened with its blade edge spaced apart by a horizontal distance from the guide rail and for elevating the blade on a plane at a second level which is higher than the top surface of the guide rail. A sharpening implement that is longer than the distance between the guide rail and the blade edge is provided, and placed on the blade's edge and the guide rail, and is moved thereacross to sharpen the knife edge.

  • Patent number: 6764383
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for processing microfeature workpiece samples are disclosed herein. An apparatus in accordance with one embodiment of the invention includes a support body, a first contact surface portion, a second contact surface portion, and a sample holder configured to releasably carry the microfeature workpiece sample. The sample holder can be movable relative to the support body between a first position and a second position, wherein the sample holder has a first orientation relative to the first and second contact surface portions when in the first position and a second orientation when in the second position. At least one of the first and second contact surface portions can also be movable relative to the support body. Accordingly, an operator can move the first and/or second contact surface portions to make minor adjustments to an angle at which material is removed from the workpiece, and can move the sample holder to make more substantial adjustments.

  • Patent number: 6413148
Abstract: A grinding jig for shaping generic recoil pads to custom fit the butt end of a gunstock. The jig includes an upright and a recoil pad mounting arm that function as an angle-capturing device. The upright and pad mounting arm are adjusted so that they fit flush against the butt and top or toe portions of the gunstock. The pad is then mounted in an upside down position on the pad mounting arm. The jig, with attached recoil pad, is then manually manipulated to bear against a vertically disposed sanding or grinding instrument.

Abstract: A clamp for holding a fish hook for sharpening, comprising a flat horizontal base (1), a first vertical plate (2) fixed to the base, and a second vertical plate (3) mounted against the first vertical plate by two bolts (7) with wing nuts (8). The base and vertical plates are preferably made of plastic. A horizontal groove (5) is cut in both vertical plates to receive the eye (9a) of a fish hook (9), allowing the shaft of the hook to fully contact the facing surfaces of the vertical plates. An optional second groove (6) in both plates receives the eyes of smaller hooks, so that both large and small hooks are automatically held at a convenient angle for sharpening. A sharpening stone (10) with a V-shaped channel (11) is preferably attached to the base with Velcro.
