Abstract: Techniques for reporting channel state information (CSI) based on scalable channel feedback are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive data transmission from one or more cells among a plurality of cells and may report CSI for each of the plurality of cells. For scalable channel feedback, the UE may report CSI with different granularity for different cells. The granularity of feedback for each cell may be selected based on the quality of a communication channel between the cell and the UE, which may be determined based on a long-term channel gain for the cell. The granularity of feedback may be defined by a subband size, a reporting interval, granularity of quantization of CSI, etc. The UE may report CSI for each cell based on the granularity of feedback for the cell. Abstract: User grouping is employed to tradeoff the COMP forward link capacity and required reverse link feedback, which makes the design of COMP practical and flexible. A channel element, such as the large scale fading, is measured for each distributed transmitter and UE pair based on reference signals, and the network receives this information as feedback in the reverse link. The COMP determines a maximum cross interference level ?req that is affordable, based on the available reverse link capacity for feedback. If this maximum cross interference level ?req is exceeded, geographically separate UEs are divided into as few groups as possible, with UEs within each group separated, and the groups are allocated different time/frequency resource blocks. The grouping is done with the constraint that the cross interference does not exceed ?req.

Abstract: There are provided scheduling and a resend control system, which match simultaneous communications using a plurality of carriers. For individual carriers to be used, the simultaneous resend control of the carriers is made by notifying channel information and a data decoding result and by managing the resend numbers. Even in case the communications are performed by using the carriers simultaneously between a base station and a terminal, the scheduling can be done to contain the resend control. It is also possible to improve the communication quality and the throughput.

Abstract: To avoid or reduce intra-cell interference, each sector of a cell is associated with a sector-specific set of system resources (e.g., subbands) and at least one non-overlapping common set of system resources. Each common set for each sector includes system resources observing little or no interference from at least one other sector in the cell. The channel condition for a terminal in a given sector x is ascertained based on forward and/or reverse link measurements for the terminal. The terminal is assigned system resources from a common set or a sector-specific set for sector x based on the terminal's channel condition. For example, if the terminal observes high interference from another sector y, then the terminal is assigned system resources from a common set that observes little or no interference from sector y. The techniques may be used for an OFDMA system that uses frequency hopping.

  • Patent number: 8014270
Abstract: A wireless receiver that sorts packets including a packet detector, multiple correlators, and multiple packet processors. Each correlator correlates a received signal according to packet type. Each packet processor processes the received signal according to packet type. A signal power detector may be provided to initially qualify the received signal as containing a packet, and the correlators determine whether a packet is present. The correlators may be configured for sequential or simultaneous correlation. For the simultaneous correlator configuration, a correlation monitor is provided to monitor correlation results to determine if the received signal contains a packet, and if so, to determine packet type. A low SNR packet detector may be provided which correlates the received signal to detect weak packet signals.

  • Patent number: 8014786
Abstract: A wireless communication system hosts a plurality of processes in accordance with a communication protocol. The system includes application specific instruction set processors (ASISPs) that provided computation support for the process. Each ASISP is capable of executing a subset of the functions of a communication protocol. A scheduler is used to schedule the ASISPs in a time-sliced algorithm so that each ASISP supports several processes. In this architecture, the ASISP actively performs computations for one of the supported processes (active process) at any given time. The state information of each process supported by a particular ASISP is stored in a memory bank that is uniquely associated with the ASISP. When a scheduler instructs an ASISP to change which process is the active process, the state information for the inactivated process is stored in the memory bank and the state information for the newly activated process is retrieved from the memory bank.

  • Patent number: 8014805
Abstract: A mobile station accesses a base station by randomly selecting a first reverse link common control channel from a set of random access channels. The mobile station transmits a request portion of an access probe over the first reverse link common control channel. The request portion is subject to collision with other signals. The request portion comprises a hash identification which is derived from a uniquely identifying number using a hash function. The hash identification quasi-uniquely identifies the mobile station. The mobile station receives a channel assignment message from the base station designating the hash identification and a reserved access channel. The reserved access channel provides communication with a low probability of contention. The mobile station transmits a message portion of the access probe over the reserved access channel.

Abstract: Each of first radio communication devices includes; a frequency spread unit which spreads frequency of a transmitted signal to generate a frequency-spread signal; and a mapping unit which allocates the frequency-spread signal to a subcarrier according to the mapping information which specifies a subcarrier. A second radio communication device includes: a demapping unit which extracts from a received signal a signal of the subcarrier specified by the mapping information; and an inverse frequency spread unit which inverse-frequency-spreads the extracted signal. The first radio communication device or the second radio communication device includes a use subcarrier decision unit that decides a subcarrier to which the frequency-spread-signal is allocated according to a communication path capacity of each subcarrier of each antenna used for transmission by the first radio communication devices and generates mapping information used to specify the decided subcarrier.

  • Patent number: 8009637
Abstract: Various embodiments are described which may serve to improve spreading channel code selection in wireless technologies that employ two-stage ranging. For example, some of the embodiments enable a number of spreading codes to be reused at each network node (111, 112), potentially increasing the number of codes available to each remote unit and thereby reducing the collision rate. Rather than simply selecting a spreading channel code randomly, remote units (101-103), in some embodiments, select a spreading channel code based on one or more considerations such as pilot signal strength, remote unit location, a remote unit mobility level, and a priority class associated with the remote unit. Depending on the embodiment, network nodes can partition the spreading codes into groups and then assign link bandwidth to remote units based on the group associated with the code selected by that remote unit.

Abstract: A technique is disclosed that enables both an IEEE 802.11 transceiver and a Bluetooth transceiver to be employed in a single wireless telecommunication station (e.g., a device supporting a wireless telephone, personal digital assistant, etc.) without interfering on each other. In particular, the illustrative embodiment enables standard “off-the-shelf” IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth transceivers to work in a coordinated fashion in a single telecommunications terminal. In the illustrative embodiment, a Bluetooth transceiver gains access to a shared-communications channel from an IEEE 802.11 transceiver by requesting access, even if the access is not immediate. The technique disclosed is also applicable to communications protocols other than IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth.
