Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method of preparing a web of flexible material for production of receptacles for packaging. The method comprises the steps of feeding a web of flexible material past a succession of stations in which operations are carried out on the web including defining blanks for receptacles having walls and tabs by creating fold lines in the web, and then laminating a film of heat-sealable plastics materials to a face of the web of the flexible material. The film of heat-sealable plastics provides a heat-sealable surface on the web for bonding tabs of each blank together to form seams between adjacent walls whereby the blanks, when severed from the web, can be erected to form receptacles having openings to receive items to be packaged.

Abstract: The top of a carton, with opposite main panels and opposite side panels, has an inner and outer major flap hinged to opposite main panels. At each side panel, an ear has a lower portion hinged to the side panel and two upper ear-halves, one hinged to each of the major flaps. To seal the top, adhesive is applied to an outer face of the inner major flap and to the ear-halves extending from either end of one of the major flaps, usually the inner major flap. Then the inner major flap is folded down and the ear-halves extending therefrom are folded down and out. The outer major flap with extending ear-halves is folded on top in overlapping relation so that the adhesive bonds. In one aspect, each ear has a notch between the ear-halves to facilitate overlapping of the ear-halves. With the carton blank coated with an impermeable coating, the resulting carton is air tight.

  • Patent number: 6488201
Abstract: A corner join in a box is formed from a blank having a base section (2) and two side wall panels (4, 6) each joined thereto via a fold line (3, 5). A joining flap (15) is joined to one of the side wall panels (6) via a fold line (7). The fold line of the joining flap (15) essentially defines the corner, and the point of intersection of the three fold lines (3, 5, 7) is located in the base panel approximately at the corner. The side wall panels are joined to one another by placing the joining flap in contact with the second side wall panel (4) such that it overlaps the later in an overlap area, and fixing it to the side wall panel. A mastic-like filler (204; FA) is applied in or on the inside of the panel fold line (3) to which the fixing flap (15) is fixed at the location of the overlap area with the fixing flap (15).

Abstract: In the production of hinge-lid boxes for cigarettes, outer side tabs (19) and lid side tabs (25) are folded last of all in order to form side walls of the hinge-lid box (10). The side tabs (19) and lid side tabs (25), extending in a horizontal plane, are to be provided with glue on the underside. For this purpose, glue nozzles (41, 42) are arranged in the region of a pack conveyor path (30) and have the side tabs (19) and lid side tabs (25) butting against them temporarily for the transfer of strip-like applications of glue.

Abstract: This invention relates to carrier straps for carrying prepared foods, such as rotisserie chickens, roasted turkey, roasted ham, side dishes or deserts. Such structures of this type, generally, employ a one-handed, paperboard strap which is wrapped around the plastic tray and plastic domed lid package in which the prepared food is located. The carrier strap secures the prepared food package and transports it so that the purchaser's hands do not get greasy or hot. Also, the carrier strap functions to provide a printable surface to identify flavor and brand.

Abstract: A roller or belt correction device for lateral alignment, during converting, of partly folded workpieces in a folder-gluer, consists of a lower structure above which is mounted an upper structure pivoting in the horizontal plane. This upper structure comprises a row of conveying elements which are in contact with the lower plane surface of the workpieces and which are driven by a distinct means at adjustable speed. The device comprises a guiding element which is parallely movable to a axis materializing the initial virtual line against which the workpieces have been previously supported in their upstream conveying path before being rotated in a conveying device.

  • Patent number: 6105857
Abstract: A carton having one or more closure flaps with a delaminating window formed by lines which are not substantially straight in a direction parallel to the fold line separating the flap from the panel of the carton. Preferably, the delaminating window is formed from an undulating curve. The lack of straight lines tends to minimize the risk that bending will occur and interfere with the sealing of the carton. The invention also includes a process of sealing the cartons by adhering the delaminating window to another flap.

Abstract: A novel box construction is provided having a numerous sealing features therein to provide a waterproof and sift resistant container. A first sealing feature is a pouring spout of three or four plies, the first and second plies of which provide a way for opening the spout. The construction of the spout also allows improved sealing because of its snap open and close feature. A second sealing feature uses transverse scoring of numerous panels and flaps with the scoring formed at the juncture between adjacent panels and flaps during manufacture and before assembly. A third sealing feature is the application of heat activated contact glue in several different patterns, including surrounding the spout with a glue border, applying "L"-shaped glue patterns on the perimeter of one panel, adding a glue border around almost the entire perimeter of one panel, and finally, applying glue on entire bottom panels and dust flaps.

  • Patent number: 6056680
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an airtight box from cardboard. The box has side wall panels and end wall panels. After a blank has been cut out, a flexible material strip is connected with the side wall panels and a number of end wall panels through adhesion. The material strip is attached to each of a number of other end wall panels while leaving clear two triangular portions not provided with adhesive which are located adjacent the free edges of the corresponding end panel. The blank is then erected to form a box through folding and adhesion with the adhesive being applied to the blank by at least one stamp. The stamp is of such design that the adhesive layer on the relevant end wall panel terminates at some distance from the edge of the adjacent end wall panel.

  • Patent number: 6012503
Abstract: An adjustable gluing apparatus for dispensing glue onto articles, such as flaps of cartons on a packaging machine. A glue dispensing head attached to a clamping block is moved along a bar by a rack and pinion gear arrangement. The bar has rack teeth, and the pinion gear and attached pinion shaft are supported by the clamping block, which has an aperture receiving the bar. Turning an adjustment knob connected to the pinion shaft adjusts the position of the clamping block relative to the bar. Rotation of the pinion shaft is selectively allowed or prevented by a locking knob threadably engaged with the pinion shaft. The clamping block is further secured to the bar by a screw in the clamping block which contacts the back side of the bar to provide teeth-engagement adjustment for the rack and pinion gear teeth. The screw has an adjusting knob and a locking knob similar to that on the pinion shaft.
