Abstract: A novel ashless polymeric dispersant is claimed which is suitable for use in an automotive lubricant composition. The ashless polymeric dispersant has a number average molecular weight of between 200 and 15,000 and derived from the reaction of a polar head group, which comprises a polar moiety having more than one amine, alcohol, acid or halogen functionality with two or more polar tail groups where each polar tail group comprises a polymeric backbone of 2 to 30 monomeric repeat units, each repeat unit comprising a hydrocarbon chain functionalised by the presence of at least one electronegative element or moiety. The dispersant has good dispersancy properties, when used as a sole dispersant or in combination with other dispersants. It provides enhanced seal resistance and has good oxidative stability in automotive applications as compared to current commercial products.

Abstract: A graft copolymer containing one or more ethylenically-unsaturated, aliphatic or aromatic, nitrogen- and oxygen-containing graftable monomers grafted to a polyolefin is disclosed. Novel monomers, methods of making such monomers, and graft copolymers comprising such monomers are based on reacting an acylating agent with an amine to form a reaction product. The reaction product may include more than one chemical compound formed from the combination of the acylating agent and the amine. The monomer is the graftable, ethylenically unsaturated, aliphatic or aromatic, nitrogen- and oxygen-containing compound(s) of the reaction product. The monomer may, but need not, be recovered from the product mixture. The preferred monomer is the reaction product of maleic anhydride and 4-aminodiphenylamine. Also described is a method of making a dispersant viscosity index improver. The monomer of the present invention may be grafted to a polyolefin in solutions or melts.

Abstract: A hydraulic oil, a predominant amount of an oil having a viscosity suitable for lubrication and from 0.03% to 0.06% of an agent improving filterability, corresponding to the formula R—Z. Z represents a polar group containing one or more substituents chosen from phosphoric esters, amides, ethers, amino alcohols, ethoxylated amines, and mixtures thereof. R represents a lipophilic chain having 14 to 24 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A surfactant composition is described. This composition is used for the emulsification of oil and water to form microemulsions. These microemulsions can be used as industrial lubricants e.g. machine tool cutting oils (although many uses are possible) and show distinct advantages over traditional neat oils or macroemulsions.

Abstract: Thermally formed thermoplastic articles can be protected from stress cracking in the presence of stress cracking promoting compounds by forming a shaped article comprising a thermoplastic and a liquid hydrocarbon oil composition. We have found that the liquid hydrocarbon oil composition prevents the stress cracking promoting materials from interacting with the polymeric structure of the stressed container to prevent or inhibit stress cracking in such materials. The methods and compositions of the invention are particularly useful in preventing stress cracking in polyethylene terephthalate beverage containers during bottling operations during which the bottle is contacted with aqueous and non-aqueous materials such as cleaners and lubricants that can interact with the polyester to cause stress cracking particularly in the container base.

Abstract: There is provided is a conductive lubricant for a fluid dynamic bearing being able to ground static electricity occurring at the fluid dynamic bearing without impairing the performance of the fluid dynamic bearing. This conductive lubricant for a fluid dynamic bearing is provided by an ester base oil such as dioctyl sebacate that concurrently has heat resistance, a small quantity of evaporation, low cost and wettability to metal, which are necessary for a fluid dynamic bearing. The conductive lubricant contains 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of antistatic additive such as alkyl aryl sulfonate having an affinity for this ester base oil. Therefore, this antistatic additive imparts conductivity to the base oil, by which the static electricity occurring at the fluid dynamic bearing can be grounded without impairing the lubrication performance.
