Abstract: Ultraviolet-curable, liquid coating compositions are disclosed which are resistant to abrasion and which are strongly adherent to basic plastic surfaces. These compositions comprise one or more polyacrylates or polymethacrylates, preferably including from 70% to 85% of trimethylol propane triacrylate, from 5% to 15% of a carboxylic acid which contains acrylic or methacrylic unsaturation, preferably acrylic acid itself, and photoinitiators (which are preferably ketonic and which desirably comprise a substituted acetophenone and benzophenone) are used to render the composition sensitive to ultraviolet light. The polyacrylate component preferably includes from 1% to 12% of a diacrylate or dimethacrylate of a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol in which the molecular weight of the diglycidyl ether is less than about 600. The above proportions are based on the total weight of polymerizable material. The composition preferably also includes 0.5% to 2.

  • Patent number: 4599155
Abstract: There is disclosed a resin composition comprising(A) a spiro ortho ester compound and/or a spiro ortho carbonate compound;(B) an aluminum compound; and(C) a silanol compound or a silicon compound which is capable of generating a silanol group;the amounts of components (B) and (C) being within the range of 0.001 to 10% by weight and 0.1 to 20% by weiht, based on the amount of component (A), respectively. The resin composition of this invention is excellent in volumetric shrinkage performance at curing operation and is good in storability. Therefore, the cured product can be used for a wide variety of industrially valuable applications, such as an ink, a coating, an adhesive, a surface coating, an encapsulation and an electrical insulating material.

  • Patent number: 4595635
Abstract: This invention provides organopolysiloxane materials having cone penetration between about 100 and about 350 (10.sup.-1 mm) and ultimate elongation of at least 100% and having reduced surface tack. This invention provides three methods of obtaining said materials with reduced surface tack. The first method comprises applying to the surface of such material an organic peroxide or a photoinitiator and irradiating the surface with ultraviolet light to further crosslink the surface to reduce or eliminate the tack of the surface. The second method comprises mixing a photoinitiator, such as benzophenone, in an organopolysiloxane fluid, thermally crosslinking the organopolysiloxane fluid to produce the material with the above cone penetration and ultimate elongation then irradiating the surface of the material with ultraviolet light to reduce or eliminate the tack of the surface.

  • Patent number: 4564666
Abstract: A liquid ultraviolet-curable coating composition contains at least 45% up to 95% by weight of acrylated polyurethane-based oligomer comprising at least 10%, based on the total weight of polymerizable material, of an acrylated polyurethane-based ultraviolet-curable oligomer in which the oligomer is the reaction product of an organic diisocyanate with an polyepichlorohydrin polyether diol having a number average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 15,000, this reaction product being capped at each end thereof with a monohydric acrylate. At least about 5% up to 55% of the composition is a liquid acrylate-functional compound providing the coating composition with coating viscosity.

  • Patent number: 4561951
Abstract: A method for locking two surfaces relative to one another is disclosed. The surfaces can be gelatin, paper, glass, nylon, or other surfaces having hydroxyl or amine functionality. The method involves bringing the two surfaces together and irradiating the interface between the two with radiation at a wavelength which causes photopolymerization to occur to lock the surfaces relative to one another. The photopolymerization can be of a cross-linking monomer positioned between the two surfaces, can be of an acrylic monomer grafted to the two surfaces, or can be of a photoresist formed at the two surfaces; a photoinitiator is required in the first two cases.
